Basically, the game has the potential for each country to have a different name for each government type. But no-one has written any in. And my thought was we could do that. Everyone come up with a couple ideas for a country they like and then at the end it all gets put in on .txt document in the localisation folder and there you have it, a mod.
for one person to do all of it for every country, well you'd die of boredom or become really repeatable in your naming fast, i only did three and im pretty much done with it, but if everyone adds in whatever they think of then hey this'll be brilliant!

and the most important thing is, its all ahistorical, pretty much no countries had revolutions to the scare to be name changing, so go wild and have fun with it and come up with something that'd give you a smile if you saw it in the game.

create a file called TAG_TitlesforAlternativeGovernments.csv
or something like that, and using notepad copy and paste this list in
Some titles wont show up unless you go into newtext.csv and text.csv and [i think 1.1.csv or it might have been one of the betas] and delete the entries in there for the same countries.

Off the top of my head, if America HAD become a monarchy, it may be the Kingdom of Albion. hms_government may have been the Dominion of America/Southern Canada/Albion/Washingtonstan, I dunno really. There where a lot of potential names for America.

The association of the title of "Empire" with absolute monarchy and the one of "Kingdom" with constitutional monarchy is a bit out of place. Empires could be either absolute or constitutional; and kingdoms could be either absolute or constitutional just as well.

For the United States, I think it should be "Empire of America" for all three forms of monarchical government.

I agree with the previous poster that proposed the articles be done away with - they do more harm than good.

This project is a pretty good idea, as, as was said in the original post, this feature is vastly underused.

I was thinking Imperial America for a way of avoiding the The, and the Dominion difference was just for B.C., Canada and the likes as Con-Mon is what they'll be in most situtations where England releases them. As far as i can tell you cant have a different name for being a vassal or dominion, so the Con-Mon is dominion for the Dominions as thats what it'll be if its peacefull released, not though a rebellion or war-goal.

As for the Empire Thing, In most cases all the monarchies ought have the same title, but in terms of a Proganda move. although your right, America would probably never suffer itself to be ruled by a King, but an Emperor could get away with it. Like the romans, who would desies the notion of Kings but salute an Emperor.

I wasnt saying Absolutes are Empires, but that an absolute is more likely to get away with calling itself an Empire as it doesnt have to be accountable. And wanting the names to be different and getting alittle carried away it.

English does use definite articles before the long-form names of countries - for example, it's "the Russian Federation" but "Russia." Grammatically it's because in the long-form name the form of government is the noun, while the common name of the country acts more as an adjective. (the Republic of France, for example)

Fortunately, Victoria II seems to be designed to automatically handle definite articles in country names in an intelligent way - for example, the UK's name is, correctly, "The United Kingdom," with a definite article - but on the automatically generated maps, it's labeled simply as "United Kingdom" without the article (again, correctly).

Incidentally, during the Victoria II period the full long-form name of the UK was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

While I'd like to go crazy with long-form country names, I think some caution needs to be exercised, since it can wind up making the map generator have problems. "United Kingdom" fits nicely into a map of the British Isles, whereas "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" would have more trouble. X of Y constructions in general should probably be avoided if possible - they're simply too long. Yian X constructions are usually safer.

columbia is another name for the american continent, british columbia is the north-west corner of it. its an identity thing. canadas called canada for the same reason, name of the place, name of the people. and it sounds more impressive

The only reason why it's British Columbia and not Columbia is that "Queen Victoria chose British Columbia to distinguish what was the British sector of the Columbia District from that of the United States ("American Columbia" or "Southern Columbia"), which became the Oregon Territory in 1848 as a result of the treaty."

If Columbia becomes an independent nation it would either consist of current British Columbia (with Oregon being Mexican or USA) or encompass Washington (American Columbia) and maybe even Oregon. In both cases there wouldn't be another Columbia to differentiate it from, except from the word Columbia meaning the Americas, which had fallen out of use by 1836. It was at most a personification of the US by then.
