This looks great. I hope you can provide some good insight into the structure of a One State Union in America, as the tendency for AUS AARs is for them to simply be the USA mk.2 with Huey Long as a sort of Mussolini-esque fascist. The AUS is far more nuanced than that, as you have shown. I look forward to seeing more!

Oh high praise from the guvnor of the UoB! I'll do my best! You should enjoy the next one.

That was a weird update. :p

Oh?

Are you going to keep Mexico in the AUS (maybe make them national provinces if so) or puppet it and put the Paternal Autocrat triumvirate in?

The Union State is One and Indivisible!

I love the Story but sorry to say i would hate that nation and i would have to follow the syndies to France lol.

So is this a mod if so where can i get it and where do i put it as there is no mod folder or a mod loader screen either that i know of.

Besides that I do like the ARR good luck. But seeing as you don't need it i will wish the other Syndie nations luck.

I can't control my readers thoughts and opinions. The mod is Kaiserreich - ported to AoD by Kaisermuffin. I'm using the version posted here. http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11470004&postcount=14

Make a fresh copy of your AoD and then copy paste the files over it, saying yes to all and you'll get what I got. :D

chapter4a.jpg

As April turned to May, the Canadian border was fortified, whilst the construction of infrastructure through Mexico and a vast network of fortresses and defensive emplacements across the narrowing of the peninsula at Villahermosa to defend against the Centroamerican armed was began. The Centroamerican syndicalists whilst poorly equipped, were extremely numerous.

New Englanders also saw the presence of the American Union State along their borders, as the Union State Military Engineers Corps, who were ubiquitous as they swept across the nation arrived in New York State, repairing and rebuilding roads, refurbishing factories and reconnecting downed communications lines between New England and the rest of the Union State. Indeed, the attitude displayed by Long in actions, if not in words, was that New England was merely an autonomous district of the greater Union. This provoked some friction between Rockefeller and his Canadian allies, who seemed to subscribe to the same world-view, whilst Rockefeller was stern about the independence of the government of the former Plymouth colonies, even if it was propped up by RMCP divisions.
hurleyp.jpg

Robert A. Hurley

In words however, Long took a different view, inviting New England to send a special envoy for a tour of the Union State. Rockefeller responded to the offer positively, seeing an opportunity to gain an outside perspective on the workings of the vast enemy that sat on his Southern border, sending young former Connecticut state highway commissioner Robert A. Hurley to Atlanta by rail.

atlantaterminalstation.jpg

Atlanta Terminal Station

Hurley's arrival was greeted by personally by Long, at the Atlanta Terminal station which at the time was the premier rail station of the Union State, along with 120 Minutemen and two armoured cars. The roads along the route to the former Governor's manse were garlanded with bunting and Union State flags, and crowds turned out to cheer the father of the nation and the ambassador from errant New England.

steele36ford.jpg

As the procession continued to march down the route, with Hurley and Long travelling in a convertible Ford Model 48 at the core of the procession, the column had to halt and pull over to one side as a company of prototype motorised cavalry zoomed past, their motorcycles revving and roaring as the sidecar mounted machineguns were displayed to the visiting ambassador – a good 50 cycles zooming past and turning off the main road before the procession could continue. Since the division were prototypes, they were not kitted out in the usual khaki paint but rather sprayed in black. Hurley later wrote that he had never been more intimidated in his life.

motorcycles.jpg

After that things proceeded rather less intimidatingly for Hurley, the next couple of weeks taking him on a tour of select segments of the Union State. From Georgia to New York, factories were being constructed, as the pro-corporatist government had given incentives to extend the manufacturing belt southward, through the Appalachians and Hurley was present at the ground breaking of a factory in Louisville, Kentucky before taking a short trip to the KYSO refinery in the town, the huge building the seat of the Union State's research into Synthetic Oil production. May 24th saw a tour of the Southern Railway construction testing ground – a full scale mockup of one of the Villahermosa line fortresses, built using experimental production techniques in Northern Missouri.

800pxebenemaelentrance.jpg

The next day Hurley was taken to the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus in Prescott, Arizona by a couple of his minders, where he met with scientists in the Universities research laboratories who were working on the development of a new interceptor aircraft to defend the skies above the Union State's cities from any foe. Whilst there Hurley also met with Henry Ford, and the local district leader, Prescott Sheldon Bush as well as his 12 year old son, George. A week later Hurley was taken on a tour of the Remington Arms facility outside of Atlanta, where the terrifying motorcycles had been returning to. It was there that Charles Coughlin and Huey Long spoke of the 'Nucleus of the Military-Industrial Complex of the Union State', a concept that put shivers up the spine of Hurley when Long spoke to him with all seriousness that the previous government had fallen in part because it believed itself immune to revolution and in part because it did not maintain the necessary physical strength to exert pressure on it's opponents, at home or abroad.

A similar discussion was attributed to Dennis Lawrence – Internal Affairs advisor to Long and subordinate to Michael Harlan of the USISB. He gave Hurley an interview that was recorded for consumption in New England, perhaps globally. This was the man behind the throne, or so Hurley felt at the time – Lawrence certainly was a fiercely intelligent political genius.

'The German Empire is... stable, but stagnant. The United States innovated, but was out of control. The Union State, will be stable and innovative. Charles Coughlin sits in the old Louisiana Senate, but God is not the focus of this nation. We are secular and strong, and the world has not yet seen us flex our hands. The intervention in Mexico was necessary. Having served in Centroamerica during my youth, we full well knew the dangers of leaving such a large Syndicalist state on our borders. The Union State is going to be the Guardian of Freedom, since the last great truly democratic states have collapsed. I'm talking of Russia and the USA of course. We are on the brink of a dark age, and those of you in New England have to understand, the Union State is the last line of defence and we have men working on a device that will provide the ultimate deterrent.'

pattonjeep.jpg

George S. Patton

Dennis wouldn't say any more on that, but it shocked Hurley slightly. When he enquired if he could visit the Louisiana State University (he had seen many other Universities and Factories) his minders replied that the facility was classified. The next day (June the 5th) Hurley met George S. Patton and Kenneth Althaus, the Chief of Army and his Second in Command respectively. Patton was dismissive of Hurley, attempting to openly pump him for information on the state of the New England Army, before taking him out to a bar in downtown Atlanta, along with Althaus. There they all got rather drunk – indeed despite the nation still being in a recovery from the civil war, the AUS was suffering no shortages of supplies. The nation still exhorted it's people to their best efforts though, as demonstrated by posters and billboards that Hurley noted on his return to New England on the 20th of June.

auspropaganda.png

Just a few examples of Union State Propaganda posters.

Hurley was sent home with the same offer Long had made to Merriam – rejoin the Union State, avoid another war and the offer of free reign over the election of district leadership in New England for at least 5 years but Rockefeller was having none of it. He politely sent Long a telegram, via the Canadian Consulate at New York that New England was an independent state and it would remain that way. Long didn't make a diplomatic incident, the AUS Navy was not of sufficient strength to deal with the Entente, and the last thing the Union State wanted was a police action that turns into a pursuit of foes all across the face of the globe. Long was too busy reforming the Union State into a patchwork of districts, zones and cities. The Universal Code of Law was passed in shortly after Hurley returned to New England, most notably abolishing the southern poll tax, and unifying social, political, criminal and industrial regulations across the country in the use of a comprehensive 200 page document that essentially simplified the majority of the legislature from the previous administration and eradicated the patchwork of local bylaws and city edicts where they were absurd or contradictory, or simply just too obscure.

newenglandborder.jpg

Still the Union State continued to militarise it's borders, including detachments stationed along the Great Lakes ostensibly in case the Canadians considered a naval attack (though such a thing would be nearly impossible to conceal). The Union State continued it's campaign to boldly step into the future – the true defender of the Western Hemisphere from the evils of Syndicalism.

The La Plataen-Brazilian war took nobody by surprise – the Syndicalist government under Astrojildo Pereira had been antagonising La Plata, first by forming a military alliance with Bolivia, and then by joining the Phalanstere international society. The La Plataens soon received shipments of supplies from the Union State, and military observers were sent to La Plata.

Damn new Englanders, Nelson Rockefeller won't be so reluctant once the AUS can stand up against the Entente.

If need be, are you gonna invade Brazil to help La Plata?

Damn new Englanders, Nelson Rockefeller won't be so reluctant once the AUS can stand up against the Entente.

Indeed, Kingfish will teach them not to mess with his empire!

Good update. Well i got to give it to you i did look up our Huey Long from our time line and he seem to be different then your Ahistorical Long. In our time he was more of a progessive democratic even though i read that some consider him a fascist. He negated being socialist and communist but if i wasn't a socialist i would of supported him in our world.

Again love the update. So are you playing the actual game if so why no game pics.

Hey why don't you use that Wiston Churchill quote in your story sometime it goes along with it. Don't know the actual year he said it but as he lives in Canada in the games time line i think, he might just talk to Huey Long about this...

Annexing Mexico was weird! :p

Mexico was the biggest syndicalist threat and an immediate neighbour. They had to go!

I would if I needed to...

Indeed, Kingfish will teach them not to mess with his empire!

Grawr! Ehehe. We'll see. I think there is a peaceout in 1.2 before Brazil is annexed, so if that doesn't change their government I might rouse the beast.

Hey why don't you use that Winston Churchill quote in your story sometime it goes along with it. Don't know the actual year he said it but as he lives in Canada in the games time line i think, he might just talk to Huey Long about this...

1) I'm not certain what you've been reading, but the material I've covered has variously compared him to Mussolini and described him as a dictator - though I'd agree he was not an outright fascist, he also never got into power over the whole US.

2) Why no pics? Because it's style. I think it is cooler to go online and find eyecandy, and generate maps from existing period pieces than to post screengrabs of the same map, and the same counters you can see in any old gameplay AAR.

3) I don't follow? Which Churchill Quote? Dude has plenty.

@All
Short update to follow. I have work the next four days, so don't expect much - I'll be getting game time in. This one is a bit of a slow period. I expect something will drag out the AUS eventually, but right now, it's a build-development phase. Feel no concern if you'd like to request to fast forward if I bore you.

If you desire peace, prepare for War

chapter4.jpg

The Summer of 1938 saw the Union State continue to undergo reform, as the navy and airforces were both reorganised, as new models of fighters came into service, the Canadian border saw regular flights of both bombers and fighters in patrol patterns along the border, occasionally crossing it, much to the consternation of the Winnipeg AA Command. New England was spared regular flybys though the strategic bomberwing operating out of New York tended to fly extremely low along the border, their engine noise creating an incredible racket that rattled the windows of any buildings they passed. This psychological warfare was continued with leaflets detailing the progress of the 'Share Our Wealth' campaign within the American Union State, fired by artillery emplacements over the demarcation zone.

boeingb17flyingfortress.jpg

As the war between La Plata and Brazil continued in the favour of the Plataen forces, the wisdom of the formation of an expeditionary army at Charleston, was privately questioned by Althaus. Long responded it would serve well enough to keep 9 or so divisions out of border patrol rotation, so that the army didn't forget what it was for. Charleston, indeed was becoming one of the largest cities in the new Union State, since the demolition of Newport News Shipyards by a detachment of CSA militia from De Weese's command when had it became apparent that New York State was going to fall, it had become the primary shipyard for the union state, where 3 carrier hulls and 2 battleship hulls had been laid down, as well as 6 light cruisers. Indeed, so much work had been contracted by the government that a Shipyard at Jacksonville had been subcontracted to deal with the cruisers. Charleston was also the primary entrance for shipping from Europe, it's docklands having been expanded extensively along with the shipyards.

shipyardwwii2.jpg

Now the expansion of the Charleston A.F.B. to house army personnel was put underway, with a parade ground, and an extensive barracks complex being the primary additions, as well as the purchase of 2000 acres for military exercises. Across the nation the UMEC completed the initial repair of the war-damage of the nation and handed over maintenance to the National Infrastructure Commission. The Union flag, was finally standardised by Long, since the nation had been using various flags. Kuhn's youth movement were flying the Eagle and Stripes, a version of the US flag with an eagle taking the place of the stars. Lindbergh, and certain others were flying the Blood Stained banner of the South, and the Texas Republic flag. Californian institutions still flew the California Republic flag. It had taken over a year for the Union State to decide on an authoritative flag that resembled something of the Union State without borrowing too heavily from the past and it's murky ideologies.
800pxjefferson.jpg

The Union State flag, officially came into use on the 14th August

As September wound on into October, the sight of the 'Jimmy' truck as it became known, was first seen in Atlanta and then with greater frequency across the nation, as the Ford-KW two and a half tonne truck was rolled out into service in the Union State Military. Indeed the design was originally from the General Motors Corporation, but with Henry Ford sitting in the Government District Office of Detroit and as the Minister of Armament, the Henry Ford Company Works, Detroit had undergone expansion and acquisition whilst Ford facilities were constructed through Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. By late 1938, Ford was an industrial giant, with all the government tank design and manufacture contracts as well as a significant production advantage and civilian market share. The Ford Military-Industrial complex also pumped out the raw materials for munitions used by Remington Arms that were sent to La Plata and armed forces. Ford's success also saw the success of McWane Steel who saw their plants expanded as well as the incorporation of former Syndicate owned factories and KYSO – with the cartel ruling of 1911 no-longer in effect, the Standard Oil Trust was reformed on the understanding that the Government had the ability to intervene with the affairs of the company should they be felt to be swindling the people of the Union State.

fordexpansion.jpg

The Union State also injected government funding into the construction and expansion of Universities across the nation, expanding courses on industrial chemistry, metallurgy, automotive design and aeronautics amongst other things. The promotion of practical and scientific studies did not the state's enthusiasm for the arts. The conception of 'One State Indivisible' permeated through into the artistic world-view of students of the period. The use of the One State Flag was popular as the administration and the armed forces adopted it. It saturated the national consciousness and seemed to contain the pleasing balance of 'Americaness' without the negative association with the previous government and it's slack handling of it's affairs. Indeed Long's conception of the Union State was a nation that took care of her people when they needed it, without the meddling presence of a dual bureaucracy or an overseeing hand. Between military investments and the concerns of the free markets, the American Union State saw out the year with one of the strongest economies in the world after Black Monday, that was rich in both manpower, material and intellect.

Very nice, I see the Union state is something in between Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism - you could almost say it is the perfect bland of the three.

Very nice, I see the Union state is something in between Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism - you could almost say it is the perfect bland of the three.

That was the Aim. I was working on the concept of Market-Oriented Fascist style governance with the Socialism's welfare focus whilst avoiding the complete bureaucracy that inevitably tangles everything in red tape. A lot of this is very much similar to my thoughts on the relationships of the Nazi's with people/concerns such as Krupp, Thyssen and Porsche - without the tangled mess of the ethnic nationalism and the need to blame people for who they are or what they believe. Yes being a Syndicalist is a bad thing in the Union State - but like being gay in Texas, you won't get killed by the law for it... of course the law will be looking for any opportunity to get rid of you however.

I hope this is an enlightening little snippet. Tell your friends about this! and I'll do a mini-question and answer the next few days, since I work 12 hour shifts it's about all I can muster. :D

Well I like it what ever it is.

The quote is the one in my sig. Forgot to mention that. Well it Goes pretty good with your story i think.

I also like the Flag Your using the Confederate flag with the One star of Texas nice blend. did you make that or did you find that somewhere.

I like the system of American Union State, it's a nice mix of all good sides of various ideologies. Maybe this is what Corporativism should be, I guess.

New flag is also nice, a hybrid of Confederate and Texan flags. I like it!

Me i was also reading up on somethings and relized that is the Mississippi flag with out the tree in the middle.

Can't wait until update. I trying to get this mod and i am going to do my own ARR sometime. It might be with my own nation i create.

I considered making one, then dropped by the Flag Standardisation Thread on the Kaiserreich boards. This was one of the suggestions, and is taken from a mod for Sins of A Solar Empire, called Dawn of Victory. It's the flag of planetary nationstate Jefferson. I liked it because it had the lone star (the Union State) and a healthy dose of Red/White/Blue. I didn't know about Mississippi until I read your comment and checked wikipedia. It's interesting for sure!

I'll see what I can do for updates. I might be able to pump out a cheeky one in the next couple days - I'm a lot better when I'm on night shifts than days (odd considering I am normally quite happily diurnal. It's the early start that kills me)

As mentioned previously, this was the aim. It was a bit of a faff, and a lot of thought has to go into balancing the interests of each grouping within the Union.

Glad you like the flag. Go vote for it on the Kaiserreich Forums!

Yep i didn't know about the mississippi thing until i was loking around wikiepidia either i was doing research for my created nation trying to come up with my own flag idea. Maybe i should step by that thread you talked about where is that located?

So did you read that quote in my sig by Churchill? what do you think? A nice debate between the two. if i am not mistaking that Churchill is in Canada.

Last I remember, it was decided that Churchill was the rather depressed publican of the Dog and Duck in Ottawa. So I don't think we'll be seeing him much - as fun as a hypothetical discussion between Long and Churchie would be.

National Honor is National Property of Highest Value

chapter6.jpg

As 1939 opened several occurrences within the Union States sphere of influence began to concern the government. The Expeditionary Corps in Charleston was put on high alert as Honduras descended into civil war whilst the Icelandic government cancelled elections, leading to unrest on the tiny island. The defensive lines at Villahermosa had been installed, but the first bunker chain was the only complete segment. The Union State transport fleet was therefore prepared for action. The target was Centro-America – should the Hondurans lose their war the syndicalists would be extinguished by the force of Union State arms. Lawrence Dennis warned Long against a war in Centro-America having served there during the 20's fighting as a volunteer for the Salvadorean government forces . Diplomatic overtones were made to Cuba, the Union State wishing to break the Entente grip on the Caribbean, as the Charleston AFB fighter corps was relocated to Acapulco and put on high alert.

70hrogersww2posternacc1.jpg

The 23rd Kentucky Infantry was also sent to Villahermosa, reinforcing the line there in the event that they might be needed and joining the 21st Texas Infantry. Union State troops waited tensely, as their leaders kept one eye on the international news coming out of Honduras, and ships patrolled offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The Iceland situation had also seemed to call, with troops in Charleston boarding their ships on February 17th and landing at Villahermosa's modest port as Centro-America was formally warned by Long on the 20th of February to cease intervening in the affairs of Honduras. The next day, this was formalised as part of the Long Doctrine – an edict against Syndicalism in the Western Hemisphere – La Plata and the Canadians both responded warmly to it, as did the German Empire, whilst the propaganda machine of the government took a more interventionist bent.

idcckw375.jpg

The 24th of February saw the deployment of the 1st 2nd and 3rd Motorised Divisions to their concentration point at Puebla to interested press coverage as well as many queries. Would the Union State be intervening in the affairs of Centro-America? Kenneth Althaus, who was present at the time, declined to comment. I and II Union Submarine Flotilla began covert patrols, monitoring shipping into Centro-America.

366mayaguerillas.jpg

The Honduran Civil War continued through March, with the Tegucigalpa Garrison being sent to the San Pedro Sula Valley and beginning the first set-piece battle the rebel forces were to face.

March 8th saw the passage of the Industrial Security Act into Union Law. This act was considered vital to the security of the state, despite the warnings by Michael Harlan and Charles Coughlin that it would provoke dissent amongst the workforce in the north, many of whom still belonged to the already de-fanged unions. The act made the disruption of essential industries – such as arms and munitions production, freight rail, foodstuffs and steel. The wording was also left vague giving Long and his delegated subordinates eo ipso the means by which to arrest and persecute workers as conspirators in industrial sabotage actions, with weighty consequences.

produce.jpg

Anti-dissenter propaganda
Admiral Halsey and Harry Knox Jr. released the Union State Naval Doctrine. The main body of the work supported the current construction plans of the government through the recommendation of a blue water naval presence that at least matched that of the Canadians. News from Honduras around the time indicated that the government had purged the Northwestern section of the country. A secret meeting on AUS Submarine Seawolf between Honduran and Union representatives sealed the guarentee of independence for the small nation from the Union State, whilst the secret section of the document placed the Union State into an alliance with the Hondurans in the event of a war with Centro-America.

seawolfq.jpg

Two days after (March 24th) saw the XXII. Union Corps (Motorised) moving into position in Merida to counter a Centro-American troop movement into former Belize City. Lt. General Collins. The arrival of a large convoy flying French colours worsened the situation, as Phalanstere supplies landed in Guatemala and the Internationale propped up the regime.

coalfiredfreighters.jpg

May the 13th saw the 2nd Union Fleet with the new light cruisers, AUS Richmond, Charlotteville and Samuel Adams and 3 former Californian navy destroyers of the Weltkrieg era, begin patrolling the Gulf of Fonseca, stopping shipping headed to the port of San Salvador, a few days later the ships were strafed by a light spotter aircraft. The AA gunners on the Samuel Adams took the impetuous pilot down. The Centro-American government denounced this act of imperialist aggression and as relations worsened, the Honduran government drove the guerillas across the border. This was the final straw for the Syndicalists, and they invaded Honduras. At this point the secret alliance was made public, and from Villahermosa and Merida, Centro-American positions were shelled, whilst the AUS Strategic Bomber Corps – having being relocated to Acapulco a month previously, levelled sections of Guatemala City.

a12yf.jpg

B-17 nose art.

25 divisions of combined Honduran and Union troops enacted a scissoring attack on Guatemala City, seeking to throw a line across the Syndicalist enemy and dismember it. The Motorised Divisions from Merida and the 2nd American Union Army lead the main thrust into the heart of the Centro-American nation.

yougiveusthefirewwiipos.jpg

June 10th saw the XXII Union Corps arrive in San Salvador, after blitzing through Guatemala City – whilst the 2nd American Union Army, upon arrival, found the hidden government of the Syndicalists after a block by block search. The territory was turned over to the Honduran Government to decide what to do with it, with the promise of Union State divisions just over the border in Villahermosa.

barvietnam.jpg

The war was short and bloody, on the Syndicalist part of the battlefield at least, whilst the Union State got to test out the new guns and tactics that had been developed in the previous couple of years, such as the adapted M1918A2 rifle (also known as the Browning Automatic Rifle). It was the successful conclusion of 1 and a half years of technological advancement, whilst the Union State began to further extend it's influence in Central and Southern America

I love the nose art on the B-17. :D
