 What happened to Austria?

Switzerland: Heaven of the Common Man
This was my first game I've played from start to finish.

Utterly defeated Sarina-Piedmont in the 1860s.
Became Great Power in 1863.
Turned communist in 1898 via rebels.

The last ten years were the funnest, as I was trying to maintain the communist parties of Egypt and Brazil from falling into aracho-liberal, fascist, and Jacobin rebels. Austria, my long-term rival, fell out of GP status in 1934 and NGF sphered Bavaria (which was under Austria's SoI) and DoWed for revenge. :p Russia tried for the third time to retake lands taken from Austria and I DoWed to expand my territory.

I managed to get Lombardia and free Venice early in 1935. I was defending Brazil from an Argentine invasion when I got the Game Over message.

Switzerland controls three alliance groups:

Red Borders: Alliance of Communist Powers (Brazil, Egypt, Paraguay)
Green Borders: Italian Alliance
Yellow Borders: Arabian Alliance

All sphered of course. The only communist not sphered was Haiti, but USA has determined to keep her. Kokland was a communist power, but fell to China when she Westernized.

Very nice, and well-presented! :) Communist Swiss, who would have known...

Lol at France up there, it always seems like someone other than russia takes those provinces up there.

This will be the first game I've played where I actually started out as a country that wasn't considered backwater... Bavaria! Well, I was Bavaria.

This screenshot was taken on the day of the declaration of the Third French Liberation of Franche Comte', which I took during the Third French Liberation of Alsace-Lorraine. Yes. Six wars, all with Italy and Prussia [and sometimes Austria, but I just attacked them for Moravia so they can't], and their friends all at once. I lure them into the plains, then smash them with masses of artillery barrages. In this case, I'm not sure if France has machine guns or not, but I know Prussia does; they're hard to get out, but they usually invade one of the smaller satellites and make it peace out and get confused. The UK joining in is a new one, I had +200 relations with them.

I took Alsace-Lorraine in the first place because I misread the tool-tip for forming the SGF. I thought I needed it, turns out I made the French angry over absolutely nothing at all.

I do no plan on forming The German Empire in this game. I have a few goals, and one of them is 'no coastal provinces in my empire'. Another is to try and get a high literacy rate in all of Austria's old provinces, and then forming Poland and Hungary.

This picture makes me smile. I really like what you did there playing as Bavaria. Although I think it would be cool to have a German Empire whose capitol is in Munich. :D

Glorious Haiti

This was my first game from start to finish. It was a great play. I didn't get as cohesive an Empire as I wanted, with lacking borders... However, I think overall I did manage to build a great nation. My first move was to DOW Denmark as Austria ravished them for Danish West Indies. I did this in order to be able to become a Great Power (You need at least 2 provinces). After that I became a Democracy, but lacked any immigrants. I then attacked Bali for population, then subsequently Brunei, Johore, and Atjeh. I began to get a great number of immigration, but none of it was internal. No Haitian wanted to move to Indonesia.

So I went after Denmark once again; DOWing for Iceland and Greenland. Thinking that once I gained those colonies my citizens would colonize it eventually leading to a state. I needed more states for immigrants and factories. However, that plan failed. I eventually took Patagonia from Argentina for a state. I tried to take some off Chile to expand my empire, that war literally lasted 35 years in a massive stalemate. I attempted a total of 7 invasions, and had them completely blockaded. Eventually I gave up.

I think one of the things that made me most content was immigration. At the end I was averaging 60k a month. I ended up with a total pop of ~5 million able body men. I started with 150 thousand.

Most of the German states bordering me are in my sphere, and Prussia has been one foot in the grave for two decades now... By the end of the game, I may form a Greater Germanic Group, with South German as the primary and the capital being Munich. :D I love HM's Government too much to pass it up, though. My POPs, despite loving Jingoism [a requirement for a nation being invaded once every five years from all sides] they always vote for the anti-military liberal party, and I have to set them straight.

Unfortunately, promotion is so much slower than demotion and my focus on making my people successful has led to me lagging behind in industry... though Bohemia and Moravia are full of despondent, unemployed workers who flock to factories. Yay.

It's not fun having your capital next to a highly aggressive Austria, but I can't resist eating their South German-filled states. This is the first game I had two National Focuses within the first fifty years, let alone four in forty!

Four NF in 40 years of in game time? That's quite the achievement. Salute!

I grabbed Slovakia and now I'm up to five, almost -six- at the fifty year mark. My population growth is insane since my Upper House was 70% Socialist for the longest time, and I went for Healthcare first.

People still emigrate though, about five thousand a month. I imagine it's because I'm being invaded by France every five years like clockwork and the war takes 2-3 years to resolve because they have a ridiculous amount of troops... though almost no standing army in mainland Europe.

Prussia fell from GP status for a while, but then popped back up and instead of attempting to sphere the unsphered minors began to spam influence on all my sphered countries. Quite irritating. :c

Try occupying their whole country, then wait until their population decreases to a number you feel comfortable with. Finally add a containment-, humiliate- and/or add to SoI war goal. This will slow them down a bit :p
