This DLC is accessed through the mod selection drop box in the start window. It is therefore incompatible with other such DLC and mods, including Dies Irae.

I happened to click on a GamersGate link I'd only just noticed, and I saw this. So what's actually in it? Is it a Paradox job, or one they're publishing on the behalf of a community group?

Edit: Here's the product description:

Common Weapons of WWII is a new units and technologies Downloadable Content for Hearts Of Iron 3. Common Weapons of WWII features about fourty common and country specific units and the relevant techs to active and use them on the field. If you like History feelings or love micro-managing your battles, Common Weapons of WWII is what you need.

From the infamous Waffen SS or Red Guard brigades to the specific purpose units such as Assault Gun, Colonial Infantry, Glider Anti Tanks and Light Tanks brigades (paradrop units), Escort Twin Engine Fighter, specific Carrier Air Group (Interceptors, Naval bombers, Dive Bombers), Motorized support (Art., AT, AA) or Light, Medium and Heavy versions of Tank Destroyers. And a lot more!

Edit 2: Thanks for the answers :)

This is a piece of work by Devildread, a member of the community. It installs as a mod, so to use it make sure you select it from the drop menu before launching HoI3. If it installed successfully and it's not there when you play, that's probably the problem. It runs seperately to your main install, so you'll still get to choose between vanilla and the new features offered.

Edit 3: Devildread has posted a beta patch based on feedback in this thread.

Edit 4: New beta patch of what will hopefully be the release version

Edit 5: As of 31/1/2011 DLC crashes on brigade selection playing with game version 2.04c. Fix hopefully out within a week. No problem with version 2.04b.

Edit 6: New patch is up

Edit 7: 30/7/2011 new 2.0 beta patch up, with FtM compatibility and a new unit - Royal Marine Commando

Edit 8: User made German localisation patch posted here

Edit 9: 2.1 patch out here

I think this is Devildread's (from DD's I.C.E mod) contribution to the cause. One moment please I have some blue coins to spend.

Blue coins have been spent, and well worth it (only $1.99). Thanks DD and Paradox!

That's a nice little list :) Good to see Paradox supporting modders all the way, and modders taking advantage of that support.

Might I ask how this DLC fits in with the game? I presume it goes in the main install rather than as a mod, so will there be ongoing balancing support if necessary? I can understand if that wouldn't be practical.

It came as a Mod and went right into the Mod folder.

Speed is Victory.

 I hope not. The download was only units/tech so there is LOTS in the Mod still...like all the events!

Now the real question. How many "copies" did paradox give DD to give away? I already purchased mine so I'm good.

Basically, this is a polished and finished mod by Devildread, one of the most respected modders in the HoI3 community,.

Congratulations Devildread !

Also nice to see that something I made a small contribution to made it into this. :)

The units and technologies in Common Weapons of WWII are balanced and designed to be self sufficient while in I.C.E. the gameplay is based upon events, decisions, map and country re-work etc. A lot of heavy modifications that deeply change the HOI 3 experience and gameplay.

Common Weapons of WWII is a little addition of flavor for the game.

This is not the end of I.C.E. because the two mods don't have the same purpose at all.

:)

How does AI use this new units/techs? Does it research them and know how to use them (combining mot. artilerry with motorised units and so on)?

So to put in different words: when I already use I.C.E., this won't give me anything I already don't have, but it would be a way to support Devildread?

First of all, this is not compatible with I.C.E. :)

If you already use and enjoy I.C.E and don't consider going back to vanilla, you don't need the DLC (you always can support me and Paradox ;)).
If you want some new units and balanced gameplay (as I.C.E. is not designed to be gameplay balanced but history balanced, this is different), Common Weapons of WWII is what you need.

And in another spirit : the most DLC you buy, the most Paradox will be likely to give me in charge of another one. The most I earn money, the most I keep modding for free. :D

So basically this is a lightweight version of I.C.E. with only some tech changes and new units? Sounds nice.

HoI3 is becoming a gem after all those patches, Semper Fi, and Devildread's mod and now DLC.

I'll buy it to show my support to both Devildread and Paradox since I think both are amazing.

This question needs to be answered, I think...

Other than that, I'm quite ready to spend some blue coins on this, it sounds good!
