Japan's doing well in the Pacific, though they're probably programmed not to go beyond Midway or something... but I beefed up China with lvl 10 fortresses, and have been lend-leasing them continuously, and they are STILL slowly losing. That's just wrong. :(

I still consider it a success. By 1941 in 90% of games China is done.

Those forts wouldn't be a bad idea at all, even for Vanilla setup. Not 10-lvls, of course, but 5-lvls would be ok IMO. Combined with AI changes it should be effective.

Although gone through the rigors of translation twice. The core of the joke is that the commissars had been indoctrinated (and -ing) about how indestructible the Red Army was, and how it would always attack... until 1941, of course.

The idea of a short victorious war on enemy territory remained well-known, if in an ironic sense, even after the war. So yes. But the point about tanks stands.

Preparations

Preparations

Forceful moves to prepare for war began in late May. On the 29th, the 2nd Mechanized Army, lead by Marshal of the Soviet Union Zhukov, was elevated to full battle readiness, and the order to move out from it's current base, the Minsk area, to south, into the Ukraine, near Tarnopol, from which the Army was to be in support of the Western and 1st Ukrainian Fronts. It was increasingly obvious that Stavka would plan to position their two mechanized armadas on either side of the Pripyat, suggesting a planned massive offensive pincer movement into Poland, aimed at Warsaw itself. Indeed, both the 1st Mechanized Army (stationed near the Vilnius/Kaunas area) and the 2nd were both stockpiled with supplies and fuel to move nearly 300 kilometres without any logistic strain.

Despite abundant supplies and fuel, as well as being the first Army to field the T-34 model tanks, Zhukov was less than enthusiastic about separating the two armoured spearheads. He argued that to ensure success, all Soviet armoured forces should be concentrated to one strategic sweep rather than two, since the failure of one sweep would inevitably result in the failure of the other. However, Stavka eventually settled the dispute, saying that to concentrate the armoured forces into just one spearhead was lacking in ambition, and would do little to actually win the strategic initiative in case of war with Germany. Zhukov adopted this view as well, but still was very concerned by the fact that the Mechanized Armies did not field heavy armour as the soviets defined it - KV-1s were strictly deployed to infantry, motorized or not, formations, with Stavka citing their "lack of operational mobility" as the main reason.

The KV-1

Finland

Finland was the only theatre in which soviet formations were kept at full battle-readiness through 1940 and 1941. Despite the removal of the 1st Mechanized Army, the remaining three armies (7th, 15th, 5th) were a strong force to be reckoned with, fielding over 30 divisions between the Karelian and Leningrad Fronts. Intelligence suggested that the finns could at best muster about 250000 frontline soldiers, taking into account their supply and available resources. Since the border had been moved closer to Helsinki, there was no more Mannerheim line, and Stavka had well leart their lesson about offensive in winter.

General Frolov, the most prominent leader during the winter war, was responsible for the "contingency plan". Despite this, Marshal Timoshenko still remained the overall commander in the theatre, thanks to his late-war successful attack through the Mannerheim line. Timoshenko would find that this time, he would have little armoured support, however, as it was Frolov's experience with the specialist light infantry that lead to the mechanized formations being deemed as "unnecessary" to the finnish theatre. However, the forces the Red Army had present, were nearly all veterans of the Winter War, and presuming a soviet suprise attack in the summertime, there was every reason to believe another war would not result in the bloodbath of the WInter War.

The "contingency plan", de facto a plan for a soviet invasion of Finland due to whatever circumstances, was as simple as the one in 1939. Again, Helsinki would be the main target, with the rest of the forces either supporting the advance or serving as a distraction along other parts of the front. The 7th Army would strike directly at Helsinki from Viipuri, while the 15th would advance slowly on its northern flank, making sure that no fnnish counterattack would come to the 7th Army's flank. The 5th Army would try to repeat the success of the light infantry in 1939, taking into their sights Oulu and Petsamo.

No problem at all, simple but effective (as the plan against Finland). :D

Makes sense, no need to apologise for the map.

I wonder how quick your strategic sweep will be in reality in Poland; it will probably depend on the weather and the resistance level?

When Barba comes are you still going to launch the historical counter offensives? Especially with the two great mechanized group in the North and South (I think thats where they were).

Stavka meeting on June the 20th (following the appointment of Kirill Meretskov as head of Stavka)

After Boris Shaposhnikov was arrested, tried and found guilty in anti-soviet conspiracies, the position of head of Stavka became available. An able commander, Kirill Meretskov, who had earlier gained vital experience in the Spanish Civil War, found himself appointed as the secondmost important man in the Red Army. With the threat of war very close, Meretskov chose not to alter strategic vision too much in fears of being caught in a transitional period, and as such, began work on finishing the last wave of mobilization rather than begin movement of large formations themselves. His most important orders of the 20th June meeting was the commands to Konev and Zhukov (commanders of the 1st and 2nd Mechanized Armies respectively) to move to their strategic springboard positions near Alytus and Lvov. This did place the formations further apart from eachother as initially planned, but it was expected that the change in position would allow the mechanized armies to outflank possible german spearheads in their (counter)offensive.

In the meeting, the scenarios of a russo-german war in the immediate future were fiercely discussed. The first and foremost scenario was the success of the soviet mechanized offensive, but in case of failure, one possible course of action by the germans (and the appropriate counteraction) was deemed most likely. It was presumed that a german offensive would aim for the Byalistok and the Lvov bulges, seeking to eliminate them, then moving forward east, leaving the battered red Army trapped in the Pripyat. Most likely operational goals for the Wehrmacht were Minsk and Tarnopol, two cities on either side of the Pripyat, and vital centres of transport outside the possible Pripyat pocket. All other motives were deemed "unimportant", as the Baltics served little value for a force seeking to decimate the Red Army, and possible romanian attacks would be easily delt with by the formidable soviet presence in Bessarabia.

The plan to defeat the presumed german Minsk-Tarnopol offensive was two-fold. Firstly, attempting to stop it before it happens. For this aim, the Mechanized Armies would attack the believed centers of Wehrmacht advance from the flank, catching the germans unprepared. Should that fail, all forces would be concentrated to the bulges in an effort to continuously channel the german offensive towards the middle, to the Brest region. In any defensive scenario, the posession of Minsk and Tarnopol would be considred top priorities.

Alright, good luck!

Don't worry, it's definetly not dead, I've been working on the update sporadically for the weekend, but typing out the entire OOB for the Red Army (200+ divisions) is long and painful work. Still, hopefully it's gonna be worth it - when looking back on the AAR in 1944 or whatever, we can trace down the history of a certain unit/leader. I want to make this feel like it's actual archival material.

But yeah, hopefully I'll have the update ready later today, if not, in 2-3 days.

Chapter 2 - Operation Barbarossa

German invasion of the Soviet Union - OOB

At 2 o'clock in the morning of the 22nd of June 1941, Germany declared war on the Soviet Union.

This brought down the full power of the Axis alliance against the Soviet Union and its satellite states.

*A mountaineer division named as a regular rifle division.
**These "three rifle divisions" actually form one mountaineer division
***Mechanized Armies, while designated as such, are actually Front-sized formations. Their experimental structure makes their organization differ greatly from other, infantry-centric Fronts.
****Despite being named a mechanized division, it was still a strictly motorized force, being created out of the 188th Rifle Division amongst the first motorized formations.
*****Where formation positions are shown, they apply for all the formations after it until another position is told.
