    Can't hire generals or explorers??

Been playing as the Roman Empire and in year 1070. I have the QFTNW but can not hire explorers or conquistidors. Also can't even hire generals or admirals. Is there a trigger before I can do so. I mean I have the $, diplomats and colonists and yet the buttons are grayed out. Ideas?

What version of the game are you playing? cause if your playing Httt then your going to find a lot of problems.

OH i think i know. Do you have army/navy tradition, if not you basically have to go to war with someone and fight some land/navy battles.

You probably have the historical leaders option on. If so, you can't hire, period.
