Erik hadn't wanted to be a pilot, but the plane was his. He had wanted to be a lumberjack, which is why he was on Lupu with the construction crew. Remote Pacific islands do not spring from the ocean with fully formed airstrips, someone has to build them, and Erik was one of those who built the airstrip on Lupu.
He had acquired the plane from Hiro. Hiro was not Erik's father, although Erik's father might have been Hiro. His mother thought it would be a good name but the minister had mistaken the pronunciation and named him for one of the battles of the white Tecumseh. Shiloh might have followed his father in marrying into a family that had immigated East into California, but he wasn't going to have any mistake about his son's name. Just to make sure the minister understood the difference between "c" and "k", he wore his horned helmet, and carried the ancestral axe to the baptism.
Fright Rieutentant Hilo was on patlor one sunny molning. He wasn't paying much attention because he knew the Amelicans wele ale sunk at Pealr Halboul. One of the things he had not been paying much attention to was his fuer guage. Now thele was a brinking led right and he didn't have enough fuer to get harfway back to the calliel. The workers didn't hear the engines of the Zero, just a faint whoosh, and then a rather noisy and bumpy landing. They hadn't expected the first planes for a while yet, and had been looking forward to a few days on the beach with the hula girls before the pilots turned up and stole them. They headed towards the plane to find out the news about what their next assignment would be.
Hilo was eagel to give it to them. He seized his sword, reapt flom the cockpit and charged towalds them scleaming.
Faced with this demonic irruption the workers did the only thing that workers faced by the might of an imperialist military industrial complex could. They took a quick vote. "All those in favour of strike action, raise both hands" It was unanimous, except for a couple of black legs that ran off and were never seen again. They downed tools.
"Firr hel up" ordered Hilo.
No one moved a muscle.
Hilo poked them with his swold, the blood ran freely. Firr Hel Up he shouted, but there was no sign of any scabs.
Hilo noticed one more asiatic rooking wolker. "Youl mothel was a whole" he told Elik. Erik blinked. "You undelstand. Now tlansrate this. FIRR HEL UP or I chop your alms off fingel by fingel". Hilo backhanded Elik.
Eric tasted blood. Already the yellow blood had been leaking out where Hiro had poked him. Now in his mouth the blood he tasted was Viking blood, the Blood of the Berserker. Seizing his axe he lashed out.
