I want to become Byzantium when I grow up - A Morean AAR

Welcome to my Morean HttT AAR.

This time, I decided to do a realistic AAR.
When I say realistic I mean:
-No WC. A small medieval nation like Morea can't conquer the world. However, it is able to create a Mediterranean Empire.
-No colonization. A Greek Orthodox nation would never colonize. Well, at least not in the first years.
-Support of other greek States. If a greek state exists we'll guarantee it's independence.
-Believe in the ''Megali Idea''. Everytime there is a chance to liberate a greek province, we'll seek it.
-Mistakes. My king and his court are not EU3 specialists. They'll make mistakes sometimes. The current king is an 4/3/3 moron. This means that he is going to make many mistakes.

The settings are the classic formula:Everything normal, no lucky nations.

    Demetrios' Diary

It's 29 May, 2 years after the Fall of Constantinopolis. In those 2 years, my brother Thomas, conquered the Principality of Achaea and I vassalized the duchy of Athens. Today I feel ready to do something big. I don't know exactly what, but I know that it will be big...

I think that I should check the map and plan my strategy...

    Hmm...
Maybe I should attack Albania. They are at war with the Ottomans and seem an easy target.

    Reforms in the government

Demetrios is an awful diplomat and an awful general but at least he is good in administration. He said that in order to survive, the Morean nation had to become open to new ideas. Thanks to his policy changes, many new thinkers arose.

He also made changes to the army; He changed the traditional Eastern medieval army with an new, Ottoman influenced army.

    Diplomatic relations

Demetrios didn't only changed the government but he opened diplomatic relations with other states. He asked the Athenian Duke to ally with him and follow him in his military conquests.

He also told to the Trebizontian Emperor that he'll protect his independence. Many of his advisors disagreed because they believed that Trebizont will be eaten by the barbarian Hordes that surround her and that we won't be able to defent her.

Later, we heard some rumors that Trebizond is trying to attack us. Because of this, Demetrios set as a national mission to build an army that was capable of defenting from her.

    Let's start a war!(Said Jimmy one day)

Demetrios said that because the Catholics didn't assisted them in the sack of Constantinople, they should punish them.

He began his conquest by attacking Albania, the weakest Catholic in the neighbourhood.

He built an army bigger than Trebizond and picked a new mission.

    The situation in Albania

The Albanians were ruled by the great leader George Kastrioti Alexander Bey(Skanderbeg). Althought they had a strong resistance, the Turks were still stronger than them and their defeat was a matter of time. When the Moreans arrived, they asked small parts of land in order to help the Ottomans. The Ottoman Sultan declined their offer and even threated them that he will attack them. The Moreans however remained in the area.

    The Pontic War

Few days after the Moreans landed in Albania, the Trapezountians asked Morea to defent them in a war against Candar.

From the side of Trebizond were the Moreans and the Moldovans. From the side of Candar was Ak Koyunlu.

The Moldovans seemed strong allies and could have helped in defenting Trebizond, but they didn't did anything at all.

The Moreans attacked Kastamon and Candar attacked Trebizond.

    Back in Morea...

Thomas Palaiologos, the younger brother of Demetrios, was trying to make peace with Albania. After some days of negotiations they signed a white peace.

The Second Phase of the War

After a long siege, Candar annexed Trebizond. In the battle, the King died, but his Heir fled in Moldova.

Morea was succesfully sieging Kastamon but got attacked by the Khan of Ak Koyunlu.

A Candari fleet got destroyed by the Morean fleet.

The Morean army got defeated by Ak Koyunlu and fled in Moldova.

While the army was on Moldova the Queen gave birth to Princess Helene.

Well, you're 2 provinces with Athens between you and the Otts. And you said it's your vassal, right? That actually puts you a little bit ahead of the original BYZ. Except that Thrace is worth more than your empire... Good luck!
P.S. This reply is more for an auto-subscribe than for any profound observation.

Thanks but what do you mean when you say ''a little bit ahead of BYZ''?

This is cool. I recently tried to play as the Duchy of Athens and got pretty much immediately annexed by the OE. Oops.

It means you effectively have 3 provinces instead of 2 and they actually have to go through something to get to you.
    >>If, that is, Athens really is your vassal. Is it? I usually start at 1399.

Yes, Athens is really my vassal. However, she doesn't accept annexation.

  19. #19
What I was saying is in a peace deal, you can offer to cancel the vassalization of Athens as opposed to giving up Achaea.
