Vandal/Visigoth Carthage... I'm taking liberties with history, as we all do. Points for guessing who Melkar is and who he corresponds to?
Very deep historical research (wikipedia) tells me Melkar was the god venerated by Hannibal himself. He will probably choose some French general to support (De Gaulle, lattre de Tassigny?)

Eh. I said too much. Just wanted to set the record straight on why I bothered to even mention the crossings from Iberia.

Hannibal didn't revere Melqart as much as he revered Baal; his name means "grace of Baal" in Punic. His father Hamilcar was "brother of Melqart". Melkar was mentioned because Hamilcar Barca built Cartago Novo, and since he is brother of Melqart, the city would be sacred to Melqart. Hence references to Iberia.

Oy. And I thought that Hindenburg had a bad case of the senile when he thought the Nazi celebrations on January 30th were commemorating the capture of Paris...

I think it's safe to say this has wandered well off the Kaiserreich path into totally uncharted waters.

Melqart is mentioned only because his 'portfolio' as a deity deals with the ocean - the fact the crossed from Cartago Nova. Coincidence? Plan?

Hannibal was highly associated with Melqart though to the extent that coins with Melqart on are thought to have used Hannibal as the sitter for the portrait - but I'm not disputing your Baal primacy connection.

Anyway, it's nice to have such a ferociously intelligent reader who isn't afraid to stand up and contribute. Thank you.

@c0d5579 - Yup. But the difference is that these gods are very old... and very real.

@Enewald - the middle ages might be a bit different, but I'm no master modder... If you Are one... then perhaps we can go totally parallel. Though HOW we are going to bring it back to Kaiserreich modern day I can imagine quite easily, though I shouldn't say too much.

@All What update do you want next? Berlin and Xavier, or Further Petainian Scheming?

The Stadtschloss, Berlin, July 29th, 1935.

Kaiser Wilhelm the Second of Germany looked out the window of his palace over the ornamental garden that grew below it. He heard the movements behind him of the various guards snapping their heels and opening and closing doors. He took a pipe and lit it, taking a slow inhalation as finally the door to the room was opened and the orderly spoke. "Francis Xavier, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, Claimant to the Throne of Spain and Burgundy."

Wilhelm turned and regarded the pretender to the throne. That latest claim was... interesting to say the least. He took a puff on the oddly simple pipe considering the vast amount of baroque work that filled the room and defined the building. "Guten tag, Xavier. Normally I would not give a personal meeting to a person such as yourself. You look more like a businessman than a king. However you have, piqued my interest. I assume you are here to speak to me, about this Burgundy business? The house of Bourbon hasn't claimed that title for centuries."

Xavier had bowed upon being spoken to, and took the slight about his suit in his stride, his hands held neatly infront of him as he replied to the Kaiser. "It is felt that the destabilising effect of France upon the continent would be nullified by the installation of three Kingdoms or so, Brittany/Normandy, Aquitaine and Burgundy. I am certain you would perhaps wish to install Princelings of your own flesh and blood, however I find my claim to be more legal. Aside from this idea, there is the issue of North Africa."

Wilhelm regarded him silently for a moment and took another pull from the pipe, the bowl of tobacco glowing lowly. "Indeed... Fat Hermann has apparently been rather agitated by it. He's been making noises about taking the Portuguese Colonies and for once he appears to mean it. Anything to ensure that he thinks he'll be strong enough to take on the black cloud to his North."

Xavier nodded slightly. "It is of course known that Burgundy historically dealt with Carthage. The Pope has asked me to perform a repeat. The twilight over the African coast is perhaps what they once referred to as the Dark Miracle."

Wilhelm gestured with his pipe slightly dismissively. "And if it is? What is it that these miracles and legends, once dispelled have returned to us, just over a 400 years later. Are we to be seeing another Empty Chair, another Battle of Milan. Always something new out of Africa, the wags used to say. I understand your plan Xavier, but why have you come to me?"

Xavier smiled almost beatifically for a moment and then became deadly serious. "Quite simply sire, it is German troops who shall liberate Burgundy, and German backing that is required for any African adventures. We must move though, for history says that it took the Visigoths 300 years to prepare their move against Christendom, what with the war with the Turks. These New Carthaginians haven't got any wars to distract them. Worse. They have backers and they have much better technology. I think we have less than a decade."

Wilhelm nodded slowly. "I shall have to think on this Xavier. There is an apartment building on Gneisenau Strasse in Kreuzberg where you may spend your time. And Xavier. Try not to die like Temeraire."

North of Genoa, 15th of July, 1477

Down in the distance by the burning buildings of Genoa, he could see Visigoth flags flying beneath what he thought, though the distance was deceptive, were gilded Eagles that glittered in the setting sun. He swore under his breath and looked at the small contingent of mercanaries that he was currently the Captain of.

Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem because they weren't under contract if it had just been them, but right now there they were escorting some German Nob south and this is what they saw when they crested the hill towards the end of the day.

He saw couriers riding off. "Shit. That means more than one beachhead. Probably got outriders too."

The young knight seemed impetuous as he rode up beside him. "What is the delay... we should be engaging the Carthaginians!"

"Sir, each one of those Eagles is a Legio Standard. There's over 6000 men down there. There's 25 of us. If it's not a problem, I'd rather like to turn around."

The sound of hooves travelling rapidly closer became an immediate part of their senses and the Captain wheeled his horse "Right you horrible lot. You've fought Visigoths before, but we're not the whole group and we're not being paid to do this! So Ride!" He kicked his horse hard in the ribs. A moment later he found the young knight riding by him...
