Should use some character themes as well:

Custom music is something I've never considered using, but this thread immediately made me realize that Vangelis's Conquest of Paradise would fit in perfectly with the themes of EU3:

I would also probably recommend anything from Kingdom of Heaven, Master and Commander (meaning the songs designed specifically for the movie), and Gladiator. As much as I love the baroque/classical period, I don't think that it conveys very well the sense of conquest, expansion, and intrigue that makes the game so worthwhile to play. More modern soundtracks designed with those themes in mind are better, I think, at capturing the spirit of EU3. There are several exceptions I can think of, however, including Vivaldi's Four Seasons* and Beethoven's 7th Symphony (Allegretto). But the real difficulty is finding music that is universal enough to feel appropriate for all the game's situations. You don't want to be stuck with Ave Maria as you're fighting the Golden Horde, for instance. Anyway, I think this topic has inspired me to drop a few additional songs in the music folder and see how it changes or enhances the mood of the game.

*I'm aware that Four Seasons is different tonally from the rest of the music in the game, but what it has always suggested to me is the image of a king holding court, which is the kind of feeling that I would want in EU3.

Have you noticed how many of the most stirring soundtracks come from movies harshly critical of the imperial and colonial system? Conquest of Paradise, Last of the Mohichans, Braveheart, Gladiator... It's almost as though the intellectual part of us is repulsed by it, but emotionally we revel in the glory.

Oh, I forgot: Also "T'amo e Tremo" by Andrea Bocelli.

Given my play style, it's weird how many anti-war songs I have.

Those two are stunning pieces. Very fitting to EU3 for me. Thanks for sharing!

EDIT

Call me fickle, but I like this for a bit of action too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT3AYcyQiSM

It's an extension of He's a Pirate, featuring a couple of pieces by Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt. (From the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack)

For a bit of colonialism, listen to the theme song of Canada: A People's History: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDEJqy_NOOo
It's pretty obscure (as all things relating to Canadian history are), but it's fantastic.

Can't beat Sean Connery and Candice Bergen.
Brian Keith does a wonderful T Roosevelt.

The marine formation and attack was classic. They use the footage to teach new recruits.
It's one of the few films to show a cannon using grapeshot against cavalry.

It's based on a real incident, though modified for Hollywood, dialog came from the actual State dept cables.

Can't ask for better music.

Well, my favorite is Bathory, the swedish one-man black/viking metal formed by Quorthon who died in 2004. Including Enslaved, a norwegian band playing in the same genre. This music is quite heavy, but brings the old norse enviroment if your trying to form a scandinavian superpower :p

Her's some songs i prefer:

Nothing gets you in the mood better than listening to some Ozzy!

Well if you ignore the bands that for me suit EU3 perfectly (Folk/Viking/Power/Pagan Metal) I would say:

Loreena McKennitt
Annwn
Blackmore's Night
Orthodox Celts
Omnia
Beltaine
Corona Borealis
Elane
Hagalaz Runedance
Potentia Animi
Hans Zimmer
Howard Shore (LOTR soundtrack)
Bear McReary (Battlestar Galactica soundtrack)
Clannad

Classical music would probably fit well....

My personal favorites thou are: Sabaton, Forefather, Ensiferum, Myrath, Turisas, Orphaned Land, Bran Barr, Heol Telwen, Tuatha de Dannan, Amon Amarth, Cruachan, Enslaved, Blind Guardian, Tyr, Elvenking, Haggard, Kamelot, In Extremo, Quntal, Schanddaul, Bathory...

Maybe it's too much "action" in it, but I sure like to play with it in WoT or other FPS.

Sorry if someone posted this too, I'm too lazy to check.
