Enemy of the State - Part 5
November 21 1936
Katsumoto, with Catherine on his arm and Anibal at his side walked through the courtyard and passed the artist who had just begun to play. Armed with a piano and his voice alone, the performer and his melancholy tune stole the eyes of the crowd and guests as he sang. Even the trio of assassin's took pause in awe of the performance. The wide assortment of guests looked on and listened to the song in it's full majesty. Some stood with tears filling up their glasses, others with no expression. Katsumoto could tell Catherine was pained by the song.
Clad in her black dress and pearl necklace, Catherine looked as the essence of serene beauty. A Grecian goddess come to grace the last evening of Augustin Justo. Katsumoto regarded her, watching her eyes turn from the armoured and confident individual he had always known to one who was a stranger. He looked at her as if seeing who stood before him for the first time and felt something he had not in a long time. Pity.
He turned back to the stage upon which the performer played and rebuked himself. What possible reason could I have to pity her? Has she suffered as I have? The answers eluded him and his eyes slowly wondered as he thought about what was going on. Not the normal day to day curiosity that most experience, but something deeper. For the first time, in a long time, Katsumoto regarded and reflected his actions going back farther and farther.
He thought of Erica. How he had loved and been loved, yet still she had betrayed him. A bitter wound, unnoticeable by those who had not known him in years prior, stung deep and deeper still. A crack in the glass of confidence and strength pained him to no end. He thought of the friends he had lost that day, and the friends he had gained before.
Stalin, he recalled with a faint smile. The friend who had given him a regal weapon. The weapon that saved his life. The weapon that had ended hers. He recalled his visits to Europe when thoughts of war seemed so far off, and times when he had found the solitude of knowledge when it seemed that none could be found. His mind wandered further and farther and then back.
He was standing in the center of a courtyard, different and yet alike to his present surroundings. Before him was a Dutchman, kneeling in surrender yet speaking of defiance. Not since that day. so many years ago had he regretted a single death he had been responsible for. Now, so long since that day in Japan, he stood in a courtyard and regained his senses.
He realized that he had been looking off, above the performer. There, on a private balcony and with a woman either side of him was Augustin Justo. In full military regalia, he watched the crowd with amusement as they burst into applause and the song ended.
Katsumoto looked back to Catherine and felt something he had not felt in many years. A tear was running from his eye.

Enemy of the State - Part 6
November 21 1936
"Are we ready? Katsumoto asked aloud, more to himself than to Catherine. She turned to him and a contented smile rolled across her lips.
"A wise man once told me that we cannot prepare for all things in life. That to truly know what we can accomplish, we must push ourselves beyond the limit of what we thought ourselves capable" Catherine whispered. "You said it yourself, that this would work. Trust yourself like I trust you" she finished.
Katsumoto looked at her both impressed and surprised at what she had said.
"I wish that feeling was mutual." He turned to Anibal and nodded. Instinctively, the man returned the gesture and walked past the couple towards the entrance of the Manor. From the corner of his eye, he saw Catherine pained at what he had said. Perhaps ... perhaps he could trust her.
"Catherine" Katsumoto said, looking deep into her eyes. She looked back at him from a glance at Augustin on the balcony. "It is time" he whispered as he drew his pistol from its leather holster. The familiar grasp of the weapon in his hand sent a chill up his spine.
"Bonne chance, mon amie" she said.
"Et tu Catherine"
Katsumoto turned from her and raised the Nagant revolver in his hand. The resounding click of the safety, signaled the beginning of the Argentinean Civil War as gunshots erupted from the balcony. Katsumoto pulled the trigger and spray of red erupted from one of the Marines by the entrance, staining his white regalia in crimson. Another bullet rotated into the barrel as Katsumoto shifted his aim and fired another shot. The second Marine snapped back to the wall and the guests flung themselves to the floor as Catherine began shouting.
Gunshots erupted from behind Katsumoto and above as he bounded to the entrance like a cat, barely managing to cut the rope holding the portcullis above the floor. The barred metal door fell down to the ground with a great crash, appearing before the onrushing guardsmen with such speed that they ran straight into it and were caught in the criss-cross of iron. Katsumoto grabbed the large doors either side of the entrance and, with great effort, pulled them shut.
"Justo is dead, my friend" Anibal said as he ran up behind Katsumoto. "Now, we just have to get out" the man said with a chuckle.
"And isn't that the easy part?" Katsumoto asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Catherine!" he called out across the courtyard. "How are our guests?" he asked.
"Scared half to death" she said, her gun trained on the innumerable bodies sprawled across the courtyard.
Katsumoto smiled at the success of the Operation and turned back to Anibal. "My friend, I trust you have sent messages to the various paramilitary contacts you have?"
"It sounds like they have already begun operations" he said, looking up and beyond the walls of the courtyard as the echo of gunfire and explosions erupted across Buenos Aires. "Do you think that Argentina will care about us, now that it's embroiled in civil war?" Anibal asked.
"I don't know. I'd rather not find out" Katsumoto said, glancing back at Catherine for a moment. Behind her, a rather fat and old guest in military dress was standing with a black object in his hand.
"Catherine!"
... who ?

Enemy of the State - Part 7
November 21 1936
Katsumoto was gripped by a heightened sense of things. The cool breeze softly kissed his neck as a trickle of sweat ran gently down his brow. The sounds of gunshots and artillery fire faded in the distance and the residents of the courtyard moved slower, as if impeded by some unknown source. As if he moved with more ease and more quickly than usual, he swept past Anibal and raised his pistol.
Dropping to one knee, he brought the revolver to eye level and peered down the sights. He pulled the trigger once and then again and again. For all the speed and ease with which he had moved, he had not been fast enough.
Anibal turned and joined in the firing, catching the guest and staining his white suit a blood red. The spray of blood filled the air from both the plump man and from Catherine.
"Catherine!" Katsumoto called out again as he sprinted towards her. Anibal ran beside him, gun raised and ready to fire on any guest who dreamt of heroics.
"Keep your hands behind your heads!" Anibal yelled, just noticing a well built man with blond hair and deep brown eyes rising on the far side of the courtyard.
Another gunshot. Another corpse. Screams rose to a chorus amongst the terrified denizens and another shot was fired to silence them.
"Stay quiet!" yelled Anibal in his Spanish accent.
Katsumoto grabbed Catherine and immediately felt the wet rush of blood on his hands. "Catherine, you're going to be alright" he said to her, as he turned her to face him with empty eyes. "Jesus" Katsumoto whispered, realizing that one of the bullets had hit her in the head. He looked at his hands in despair, covered in blood.
"He hit her in the head ..." Katsumoto said in shock.
"What?" Anibal asked in a panic. The situation was deteriorating rapidly and it had just become a great deal worse.
"She ... the bastard shot her in the back of the head"
"Great. What the hell do we do now?" yelled Anibal.
"We have to get her out of here. Fast" Katsumoto said.
"Is anyone here a doctor?" demanded Anibal in a panic.
"Catherine. You're going to be alright. We're going to help you" Katsumoto said, a tear dripping from his eye. "Catherine! Catherine listen to me!" he yelled, shaking her. Her eyes went blank and he stared deep into them, as if demanding a response from death itself. "Catherine." he whispered, holding her close to him.
"Anyone?" asked Anibal.
From the myriad of faces arrayed in the crowd, there rose one amongst them. An old lady, dressed in beige and wearing something akin to a family heirloom around her neck. Her hair was up in a bun and she wore earrings of a pearl and gold mix.
"I am a doctor" she said with a worn and raspy voice.
"Over here! Now!" yelled Anibal waving his gun like one would wave their hand, pointing to where they want someone to go.
Katsumoto still clung onto Catherine. Hoping against hope for some sign of life. "Catherine" he whispered to her, holding the limp body close to his chest. He was crying now. For this woman who had lied to him, who had seemed so sincere and who he had kept at arms length. Perhaps, perhaps he had made a mistake.
He looked up at the elderly doctor who was walking towards him, nudged on by Anibal's pistol. "Please ... help" he whispered.
**Something of a more disastrous turn of events today. Anyone think Catherine is dead? Anyone think she isn't? What about Katsumoto and his reaction? Everything's welcome!**

Well, being shot in the back of the head usually is a bit fatal, yet there are a few cases where people have recovered from severe headtrauma. Guess whether she lives or dies depends on the whim of the writer at the moment.

Indeed it does. It also depends on the story behind her and how important she may or may not be ... perhaps I would let the readers decide ... or perhaps not.
Maybe, possibly, probably ...
As a writer, I don't know that I'm that cruel. But maybe.

Interesting update...but I will not interfere with your to live or not to live...
when do you get back to the main story with the world overview or a more focusing on Japan or the alliance?

Indeed. She is a Skynet robot from the future. Just wait for Arnold Schwarzenegger to show up and save the day. Or make it worse.
At first, I will focus on the world's larger form and perhaps give the readers a chance to have several votes which could have incredible implications for the AAR. But Japan will be a Major factor and quickly overtake the World .... thing ?
