Chapter 2.6: The Finnish(ed) Pocket.
The Battle of Vipuri was one that was finally won just before years end, with the real heroes of the day being the Red Air Force. General Conan was drinking heavily as his troops went into battle charging into a breakthrough in the Finns' defensive works made by the new Sturmovniks. The battle was bloody with the Finns laying an ambush and massacring Soviet forces, but sheer force of numbers rolled over the Finns. The 9 division army under Conan combined with a coordinated attack with the forces at Turku, and an amphibious assault against Helsinki, hoping to cut off the Finns from the sea. Arya's Corps was marching down to Pori, closing the pocket and 1 million men marched towards Mikkeli.

With the ports of Helsinki captured the remnants of the Finnish navy were forced to set sail into the guns of the Marat and the Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya, with Marat adding the Imarinen, a heavy cruiser, to his kill list.

With the recapture of Murmansk, at 1700 on January 13 1940 Finland capitulated to become a Soviet Republic.

Up next... we oppress some monks.

Finally it's my time to shine again. To be fair, Xinzhang wasn't much of a speedbump...but the PLA will take what it can get.

Barbarossa is approaching, hang tight readAARs...

Also: I edit Alexon47's work between a few minutes and half an hour after he posts it, so if you see me post, read the last update again...it may be legible this time ;)

And UPDATE!

I gain more respect for Comrade Cao and his department by the day. To a simple soldier such as I, it would be an inconceivable task to issue new weapons, ammunition, and equipment to a million and a half soldiers, yet our comrades in the factories and on the supply trains treat this as simply another day's work. Simply amazing, given that thousands of tons of brand new weapons and munitions must be moved every day, in addition to all the supplies that the People's Liberation Army consumes in a day's work. It is good that we are so closely integrated with the local population, because should half my men not be invited to dinner at various farmers' homes every night, I would be hard-pressed to feed them indeed. The PLA's soldiers are young strong men, with endless pits for stomachs, especially after a day's training. Too many visits, though, and I fear I will begin losing soldiers - my boys of iron are handsome indeed in our new Soviet-made uniforms, and the farm girls are not blind.

Despite all the support we receive from our comrades in the fields, we are still running short on supply. No matter how good a farmer is, he cannot grow bullets and herd rifles. The, thankfully few, problems we are having with upgrading are not helping. For example, the 5. Juntuan, a light infantry formation under my command, has, in lieu of the 12.7 mm rounds for our new Type 40 heavy machine gun, which our friends in the Red Army call the 'Darling' for some reason, received an enormous shipment of 152 mm artillery shells, which they of course have no use for, having no artillery heavier then 82 mm mortars. I was only brought to notice of this clerical error when Mj General Zhang, commanding the 5. Juntuan, bemusedly called my headquarters asking what he was supposed to do with artillery shells the size of a small child. The mistake was resolved in a day, and the shells were quickly sent to Lt General Peng's Di'5 Jun. However, that incident illustrated just how much of a problem our modernization program is. Moreover, it illustrated how wise Chairman Mao's decision to sign a peace with the devils was. Know both the enemy and yourself, and you need not fear defeat in a thousand battles.

In our modernization process, our Soviet comrades have also given us some advice on logistics. Sure enough, we now have a new marching order for the PLA's soldiers. An individual's full equipment list looks something like this:

Boots
Wool socks
Wool pants
Belt
Cotton shirt
Wool jacket with unit identification
Wool hat with red star

Type 39 rifle (the one our Soviet comrades call the Model 1891/30) and bayonet
100 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition
2 Type 36 grenades (Soviet name RGD-33)
Type 17 pistol (Chinese model)
20 rounds of 7.63 mm ammunition
200 round box of 7.62 mm ammunition (for machine gun)
Weapon cleaning equipment (cloth, oil)

Pack
Field dressings
Shovel
Raincoat
Wool blanket
Soap
Matches
2 canteens of water
4 pounds of porridge mix (rice, barley, corn...anything the locals will give us mixed with our rice, really)
1/2 pound of dried tofu

Perhaps the added strain of bringing every division to standards is making our current modernization program worse then it should be?

Chapter 2.7 Looting Lhasa, Pillaging Paris

The PLA forces in Tibet were closing in against the last resistance that the feeble monks had put up. The conquest was a mere matter of marching, rather then a true war. In early February the Tibetans sent a message to the soviets asking for peace.
screensave27.th.jpg

It was rejected, because Conan's drinking problem meant that it became a coaster for a bottle of vodka instead of being passed onto the Politburo. This stained treaty is currently in his great grandson's dasha in Siberia. The Tibetans were promptly annexed and repressed horribly. The Chinesetaught them how to shoot, and how to build rickety houses.

Special Russian advisers under the command of General Arya were sent to pacify the population through the consumption of Stolichnaya in large quantities.

They were not impressed.

THE GERMAN-EUROPEAN WAR UPDATE!

In April the border was stagnant.

Then the Germans decided on the repatriation of Luxembourg.

Apparently England forgot Poland, then remembered how the last war started and declared war as Herr Hitler decided that he'd like to spend his vacations in Belgium.

The British appointed Churchill, Stalin is quoted as saying "They traded off a coward, and they got a drunk in return."

In May the only Belgians left were the the ones holding out valiantly in the forests of Mons, digging into the trenches left from the Great War.

By the 20th the Germans were at the Seine and could see the Eiffel Tower, Adolph's blitzkrieg was soon to be complete as thousands of his Panzers drove south.

In June the last vestiges of defense were being made at Brest and at Cherbourg, with Paris falling into German hands.

The Germans, still hungry for more land, declared war on Norway and Denmark.

The Danes took the easy way out and accepted annexation. Stalin was not pleased as now the Germans controlled Copenhagen, and the Baltic Fleet was locked into the Baltic Sea.

On June 7th the Nazis established a puppet government in Vichy. France had fallen.

In July the Soviets went to war with the Japanese over more conflicts in Siberia. The Chinese said they would take full control of the war and deal with the Japanese Imperialists that encroached upon Soviet territory. The borders in the south looked like this at the outbreak of war.

The heroic battle of Vladivostok Bay was a sea engagement that lasted 6 weeks as 3 transports outwitted the entire Kido Butai.

In response to Soviet aggression, the Japanese signed the Tripartite Pact.

The Japanese once again land in East Siberia, the Chinese dispatch the Eighth Route Army and various other PLA elements to deal with the issue, the Soviets send Stavka staff under Conan as advisers.

The Japanese Offered Peace, The UK Annexed Syria, and The USSR developed Rocket Artillery.

Up Next...oh holy crap, the Germans are coming.

Japan is rather belligerent, ANOTHER war with Communism.

STAVKA Direktiva no.3

Comrades! As the nations of our proud socialist state organize the defense against fascist aggression near the European borders, I have been assigned by the Defence Department the task of Expelling Japanese imperialists out of the eastern parts of the country. Therefore:

1. The few forces under my command should report on weapon and ammunition status and shortages.

2. A reorganization of all formations to a new, flexible force able to deal fast and effectively with any intruder force will take part upon completion of registration of the available forces.

3. Each Division will be provided with the proper amounts of Vodka to boost morale.

4. Any commander who dislikes the name of his formation shall report it to me personally, and the issue will be settled as soon as possible.

STAVKA Commander, Gen. Conan
--------------------------------

"now let me boost my morale too, comrades, 'cause we have hard battles to fight!"

General Conan shouts to his staff, thinking that his transfer to the far East should be a work of General Aryans political plotting and influence...

Well, he was one of the few high ranking officers still alive after the '38 purges, owning this to his devotion to duty which came always above any power struggle. To his comrades it was common sense he should be a Field Marshall long ago, but apparently the flaws of hierarchy had not been fixed with the aid of the execution squads...

That was the main reason for his frequent abuse of alcohol.

The Dragon Awakes

Mao Zedong, son of Mao Yichang, walked to the podium, and laid his hands on the Chinese dragon embroidered into the red flag draped upon it. This was the day he and millions of other Chinese had laboured for. February 4th, 1941. Thirty years after the Xinhai Revolution, fourteen years after the Autumn Harvest Uprising, seven years after the Long March, and five years after the start of the War of Vengeance, as the Comintern war against the Japanese was now called. A day that would forever be engraved in history. The founding day of the People's Republic of China. He smiled. Should death take him now, he would be satisfied, for his life's dream had been realized.

Mao looked outwards, from his speaking stand at the base of the Tiananmen. A million soldiers of the People's Liberation Army, selected from the PLA's crack divisions, were formed before him, bayonets fixed and banners flying. These men, both veterans of the Long March and fresh recruits who had proven themselves in the fierce fighting of the Vengeance War, were the cream of the PLA, the cadre upon which the army was based. Next to them were the tanks of the Red Army, the remnants of the 1st Tank Army which had left a bloody trail of Japanese bodies in their race across the coast and, when finally encircled and trapped in Nanjing, had forced a butcher's bill on the Japanese as the price of their destruction, slaughtering the Japanese even as their tanks burned and their men died. Scarcely a regiment remained of what had once been nine divisions. They had earned a place here as much as any PLA man had.

Further out, beyond the army, were the citizens of China. Bedecked in red, both the traditional Chinese color of luck and the color of Communism, Mao reflected that this was a fine sight indeed for the beginning of the new China. They had, upon seeing their Chairman ascend the stage, broken out into the Internationale, the anthem of the Communist International. Even further behind them stood the proud flags of the Workers' Republics, consisting now of the Soviet Union, China, Korea, Mongolia, Tannu Tuva, and Indochina, all surrounding a taller flagpole with a simple red flag flying - the flag of the workers.

Mao took a breath, and spoke.

"Today, we stand here to mark the beginning of a new era, an era of justice. The Chinese people have endured a century of humiliation at the hands of the Imperialists. Today, we declare that they shall reap what they sow. For thirty blood-stained years the forces of the People have fought to renew China. Today, with aid from our fellow Communists, rendered in blood, sweat, and steel, the honest currency of the workers, we can finally say the words "I am Chinese" with pride. China has been reunited, the imperialist puppet of the traitors Chiang and Wang has been destroyed, and the Japanese presence on our soil has been exterminated. Today, the entire world shall hear these words.

China...has stood up!"
