We went to an "e-school" meaning we all have laptops, and by and large very little work gets done.

Says this kid. I do perfectly fine in school.

Bastard, apparently. ColonelIronBoot told me that's what it meant.

Chapter 3.0: Voyna!

At 5:00 on the 7th of June 1941, forces of the Axis powers began their assault against the forces of the Red Army.

Generals Arya and Connan, under the Com and of Field Marshal Zhukov were charged with the defense of the Kiev Military District. Zhukov left command up to the two generals as he took several tank divisions to attack the weakened Romania, in hopes of a hammer and anvil counter attack.

Despite Soviet generals planning for the outbreak of war some months before with the withdrawal from the Far East, counter-attacks into the frontier in places like Norway were slow going, and many ended in failure.

The line held for the better part of the first day of the conflict, but some forces, like the 9th Army at Lublin was forced to retreat in disarray under heavy pressure from the enemy. Thankfully forces were deployed several hundred kilometers deep so as to be able to absorb the initial German attack. It was widely feared however that a breakout would be disastrous, so plans were drawn up for a fighting retreat to the Don River, where a new line of fortifications was being built.

The first day of conflict led to the Bielsk Defense Force being forced to retreat from two whole Panzer Corps under Rommel, as well as various other elements of "Army Group Center". Von Rundstedt led various elements of "Army Group South" against a Soviet counter-attack across the Vistula towards Zamosc. The attack failed, bit these counterattacks seemed to slow down the German war machine as the Soviets fell back into reserve armies.

In the south Zhukov led 6 medium tank divisions against forces on the Romanian border, actually sweeping them up handily, crushing them with speed against the inferior Romanian Defence Force.

In the North, the command structure was nearly nonexistent after the forced pull back to Kaunas, leaving most of Lithuania to be swept up by German panzers. It was hoped that the front would hold at the former Polish city of Wilno, but that would remain to be seen. The casualties in the northern sector were easily the most staggering, nearly every division was understrength despite men pouring into the front.

Commanders fought their own private wars as Moscow was paralyzed with indecision. Generals struck where they could, like Konev's attack on undefended Kaliningrad in the second week of June.

The Battle of Kaunas led to the smashing of any semblance of order in the north, as a mad dash was made for the forests and favorable defensive positions at Wilno. Konev continued fighting for Kaliningrad, this time against a Panzerkorps as well as a secondary understrength Panzerkorps. Even though all of his divisions had the newest in artillery, his infantry army comprised of peasants was hard pressed to fight the steel behemoths of the Germans.

Then a small saving grace, as Soviet forces neared the Bulgarian border, the Bulgarians decided to switch sides and generally cause havoc behind German lines. It was remarked so much the better, because Zhukov did not want to take his tanks through the mountains that plagued him so.

An example of the havoc, the first capture of German soil, is the Bulgarian garrison at Nuremberg. Forces throughout the Comintern rejoiced at this GLORIOUS capture through deceit and backstabbing.

Around the 20th Stavka recovered its wits, and commended Zhukov for his proactive action. Plans are made to smash through the Balkans and up through Austria into the heart of Germany.

Kaunas was re-taken, by none other then the Tannu Tuvan Cavalry Corps, smashing through the complacent German defenders, and impaling them upon lance, using grenade and pistols on tanks. The revolutionary Red Cavalry were made to be heroes in the press, after they had retaken the Lithuanian capitol on June 27th. It had been twenty days since war had broken, and the front has held.

I feel like wasting my time here in the outskirts of Kiev. Most of all, I have been with little left to do other than supervise the trenches and do all those logistics. The front is many kilometres away, and it seems it won't be coming nearer even with incompetent Generals like Aryan in command.

Hearing of the Nuremberg uprising though, I remember those glorious days as a deputy officer in Berlin... The burning of the Reichstag back in '33 was shamelessely charged on comrade Dimitrov and other comrades... after Hitler's vast expansion across Europe and the dominance of the GeStaPo there was noone even thinking that a communist uprising could take place anywhere in the country, especially the city where the fascists held their great rally a couple of years ago.

Now we all witness the power of the working class, raising their fists against their goverment, refusing to fight against their comrades! Nuremberg has fallen to the heroic workers' brigades, in collaboration with a Bulgarian division happened to reequip themselves in the region. What a great symbolic move to raise the Bulgarian flag over Nuremberg as soon as they heard that G. Dimitrov was in charge of Soviet Union's new ally!

To be honest, i think that the uprising will end in another bloodshed. Our comrades are cut off from any support and the German goverment will take harsh measures to regain control. Only hope for them is to spread the revolt around. Let's hope the local population can raise its fist against the Nazi oppressors.

It got better. The Bulgarians also took that island between Germany and Sweden

Next up: Stop the Nazi charge!

3.1: Stop the Nazi charge!

The battle weaved back and forth in the north, with Lithuania becoming a battleground over which armies see-sawed, advancing and retreating over the same few kilometers of ground again and again.. But there was not a blood bath everywhere, as the Romanians fell on the 27th with most of their forces tied up in Russia proper, trying to break through the lines of the heroic defenders.

In the north, fierce battles raged in Scandanavia between Axis Alpini and Gebirgsjagers from the Alps and Comintern Pabing and Gornya Strelkovya hardened in Chinese mountains. Each mountain was a stronghold, and each forest a defensive position. The situation was so grave that the PLA decided to commit Lin Biao's 8th Route Army, now composed of 11 mountain divisions and a headquarters division, to the Scandinavian campaign.

Once again in the north the combined forces of the Internationale fought bravely at Kaunas with particular distinction going to the two Tannu Tuvan Cavalry Corps that fought bravely, even though they were using equipment from the 1918 revolution. Many a film was made about the brave Tuvan gun carts that rode gallantly through German lines, spreading death to the Fascist invader wherever he hid.

Then in the south, a breakthrough! The armies of socialism were at the gates of Krakow! Zamosc had fallen and Bielsk was soon to be in Soviet hands. It seemed that if forces could sweep from the south that an encirclement of the whole army could be made, and the war could be over by Christmas.

Lublin fell and Lt General Model was forced to retreat as tens of thousands of Soviet troops crossed the Vistula with their eyes set on Warsaw.

News from the diplomatic news service came, and there was hope in the east that the US would enter the war to further divide German efforts.

Bye Bye, Romania.

You're doing excellent to have this much in 1941, I'll be honest, you're somewhat on the offensive.

indeed we are, but that wont be the case come wintertime

I expect both sides to be raped by the winter, the only bad part. At least you can work your magic in warmer Southern Europe still.

Well, no, it's not that...

The first snow falls here, in the outskirts of Kiev... No news from the front since days, no news from central command either. I would guess there was something terribly wrong happening, if there were not the enormous quantities of supply stored every day in our decoyed depots and much more of it being transferred to the front...
And there's no news from the Nuremberg uprising either. No news from them means bad news, not difficult to guess.
This morning I had reports of a new type of single - engine aircraft flying over the city revealing a big red star painted below it's snow white wings... Our industry is improving rapidly, and this can be seen on all aspects: Quality and quantity of supplies, new types of ammo and AT guns, Even a new tactics book for NCO's has been distributed last week.
Hopefully I have the chance to use all this soon, because the only thing not improving here is our vodka... And I wonder if I can be supplied with enough of it as the temperature is falling...
