    Heir to the Throne - Dev Diary 1

    A new train is rolling here at Paradox, and this one has "Heir to the Throne" painted on in big Gothic letters. This is the expansion we did not intend to make, but over time (and a few beers) the good ideas just kept piling up. Although, with the game already labeled "complete", we were in a bit of a pickle. So we asked you, our loyal and steadfast peons, ah, players, if you could stomach yet another EU3 expansion. It seemed you could, so now everybody is a winner! See how well these things always turn out? Now, since I am the Procurator of Paradox Expansions (or "POPE"), I'll be writing these dev diaries.

    While this expansion is titled "Heir to the Throne" (more on heirs and dynasties in a later entry), perhaps the most central feature is the concept of war aims, which should make wars more interesting and counteract "blobbing". Casus Bellis are no longer generic, but divided into many different types, each one allowing a specific set of peace conditions. The resulting war will be named after the CB, so you will have the "Swedish Reconquest of Gotland", etc. Thus, while a nation may have sent you an insult, that does not really justify demanding half their country as recompense in the peace negotiations. (You still can, but it will give you mucho infamy/badboy.) Instead, taking gold or having them revoke core provinces will yield more prestige. Moreover, there are no longer any special stability rules for declarations of war; everything is now consolidated into proper (and easily moddable) Casus Bellis.

    "What?", you say, "I want more land! Only provinces matter!" Well, if you want to expand rapidly, there are Casus Bellis for you too, like "Imperialism", "Nationalist Unification" and "Holy War". These are typically not available at the start, but require a certain level of government technology or a national idea. However, prestige will be not be anything to scoff at in "Heir" (another thing for a later dev diary.) In line with this, a new peace option has been added: "Concede Defeat". This is an alternative to White Peace which gives a prestige boost to the winner, and a corresponding loss to the loser.

    That's all for now. I shall leave you with some screenshots to inspect and ponder.

    Oh, and here is an example CB script for the modders among you:
    # Nationalist unification
    cb_nationalist = {
    badboy_factor = 0.25
    prestige_factor = 2
    peace_cost_factor = 0.5

    prerequisites = {
    government_tech = 18
    culture_group_claim = THIS
    }

    allowed_provinces = {
    culture_group = THIS
    }

    po_demand_provinces = yes

    war_name = NATION_WAR_NAME
    }

    Hopefully the new CB system will give a lot more depth to wars.

    What penalties are there for declaring war without a Casus Beli?

    This looks very cool. I voted no in the 'do you want a new expansion'-poll, but I wouldn't if I had known the focus of the expansion pack. Can't wait for release date.

    I'm guessing prestige is how monarchies are going to justify themselves to the people, so low prestige will result in pretenders, succession wars, having your throne claimed...

    Nice and smart, very well thought. Good to see it's not all about province count any more.

    If I get this right it would mean that France will still blob-ize but won't get lands beyond it's sphere of influence/culture. So it will end up looking like normal France looked like unless it goes imperialistic later and decides Milan and Low Countries are a really good place to send their troops for a summer vacation.

    Exactly what I would expect France to do in my games. No more annexations of Castille by 1450. :-)

    Will there be a Casus Bellis type to force a nation to release another nation or to force them to end vasselizations?

  7. #7
    Hmm, yeah, a CB designed to counter overly-aggressive nations wouldn't be a bad idea. It would be like a lighter version of a badboy war.

    What's the Bremen-Hamburg-Lubeck thing in the first screenshot? The Hanseatic League?

    I also voted no for the EU expansion, though the more I have read about HTT, the more I am glad PI are making it. December can not come quick enough.

    I'm glad Holstein has been added, although I do hope Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck haven't been made all into one nation.

    It looks Lübeck to me. I think nobody will play the bull anymore

    I love the sight of redesigning and adding provinces.

    I hope with the CB the AI will attack more often. I had a game in witch Russia didn't attack the Golden Horde. they had numerous cores and a tech lead over them.

    But i hope it will keep the BBB "small"

    The flag could well be Lubecks own? I don't remember Lubeck ever belonging to Mecklenburg in real life so that's a good development...
    Love the new casus belli rules, though I think I'd rephrase the popup for when they're used.

    EDIT: Most of all I love being able to create my own, this will be immensely useful when modding

    Finally!

    I want to read more about HttT. Is there a new dev diary each week?
    A question by a forum user during the 200k event: "With 200,000 accounts, you must have a fair amount of data to mine. What was the most surprising thing you learned about us, the forumites?" - Johan's answer: "That if someone has not registered a game, he's extremely likely to not have bought it."

    This sounds awesome.
    Can't wait for the next diary... I'm still dying to know whether the "call allies to arms" option will be in...

    This certainly looks interesting, but only gameplay will tell the full story. I take it the 'hidden' term BadBoy will now be renamed to Infamy in-game?

    Stability factor gone for declaring war sounds a little iffy, since that's usually what keeps me from bludgeoning my smaller neighbours repeatedly until annexation - I can only presume there will be other factors crashing your stability from now on. More Meteor events?

    Will it be possible to see in-game what, exactly, the various Casus Bellis will justify in a peace settlement? What will a Diplomatic Insult justify without accumulating BB/infamy or crashing your prestige - a skirmish and some gold? One border province? Two? A border province with a core claim on it? The screenshot of the French peace offer does provide some information to this effect, but you'd only get that when making peace, not before you go to war. Would be sort of annoying to exploit a 'light' CB to fight France, only to learn you can't actually take any land from them without becoming the scourge of Europe in the process.

    to not have to call them for a minor and often lose the alliance

    in the 1st screen , it's already may 1400 , but if meck doesn't start with the CoT it will be a lot less popular
    maybe with this Navarra will attract less DoW from Castille and France , and papal state too from various italians

    Looks nice, perhaps EU III will get a chance now.
    Montgomery to Colonial secretary Oliver Lyttelton 23 December 1951:

    “Dear Lyttelton, Malaya
    We must have a plan. Secondly we must have a man.
    When we have a plan and a man, we shall succeed: otherwise not.
    Yours sincerely , Montgomery (F.M.)”

    Lyttelton in his memoirs: “I may, perhaps without undue conceit, say that this had occurred to me”.
