Songtsen Gampos Might - The Return of the Kings - '36 Tibet (Modded)

    1. Introduction
    A new Era

H.H. the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso to his secretarsy:
"I can feel that the chain of actions that has made Tibet a great Empire several decades ago are still a burden for our old and weak nation. When we were powerful, we conquered neighbouring nations instead of sharing our wealth and promoting peace in Asia.
We humiliated the Chinese Emperor and took his daughter, we oppressed fellow Indians and used our military might to make our neighbours behave like our puppets..."

Assistant: "Your Holliness, I see the logic behind our fear. But there is no nation willing to attack us. China has now become our friend, we are trading with them. And anyway, they are not even united. Warlords are fighting for control!"

H.H. the 13th Dalai lama: "Don't be that short-sighted. They will not be facing internal problems forever. Dharma never forgets. Our former actions are going to turn against us.

I have no possibilities but one. Those who caused the problems shall be taking care of them."

    Assistant: "Yes, your Holliness"

H.H. the 13th Dalai lama: "I want to you tell everyone to leave the Potala for 16 days. I will do a ceremony and ask for guidance..."

    16 days of praying later...

"I call upon you. Oh great kings of the mighty kingdom of Tibet. I am calling you! Songtsen Gampo!"

    The light is flickering

    "Trisong Detsen!"

    The earth is shaking

    "Tri Ralpachen!"

Now, everything seems normal, but... Suddenly, wind blows and 3 men appear.
    3 Kings.

The kings, the Emperors, that ruled Tibet in the 6., 7., and 8. century.
At that time, Tibet was known as the Greater Empire of Tibet

Dalai Lama: "Great Kings, you have spread buddhism in Asia and defended Tibet's right to be a free country. You defended Tibet's dignity. Through your actions, our beloved country lasted to this year. But I am old and great danger lies in the future.

You shall be the ones who restore Tibet as a great Empire, not to oppress our friends and neighbours, but to protect them. The holy Land of India is occupied by Britain. I can sense that the world is on the wage of a new war, that is going to cost millions of lives. Our Chinese neighbours will be attacked by a much greater force from the east. We will be attacked by a heavy chinese force from the east. Europe is going to burn, as is Asia. You have to take control of this nation and lead it to former glory...! Not for us, but for the human beings on earth!"

King Songtsen Gampo: "We know why you called us. We are prepared. All three of us are going to lead an army and move into India, China and Burma. Don't fear the future, for the kings have returned to the holy land"

Happy that his nation is saved, the Dalai Lama resigns of all his earthly duties and decides to concentrate on religion.

3 days later, the kings take off. All of them managed to equip armies of hundreds of thousands Tibetans with bows and swords within a day.

Within a week of fighting, all of them realise that combat has changed. Fighting while withdrawing back to Tibetan borders, they agree to sign peace treaties with Tibets neighbours and work on a plan to modernise the Tibetan economy and education system. In the coming 16 years, Tibet will have built factories, started to refine metal and rare materials and recruited a lot of educated professors.

Will the emperors be able to finally achieve their goal of making a peace to last another 1000 years or will they have to surrender to destiny.

    Time will tell.

    ------

This is my first AAR, so comments and criticism is always welcome!
Ive modded the game and described all changes I have made in my introduction.
    Mods:
Weather fix (dont know if it really works)
    99 problems
Adapt Tibet to my alternate history (More industry, less neutrality (remember the short wars?, some resources, more leadership)
    1.2 on normal

If you would like to help me, you are very welcome. Tell me what strategy I shall be using, whom I should align with and what units I should concentrate on.

Tibet has an interesting situation where it doesn't really have any nearby worthwhile allies. Britain will just get you involved in Europe, the Chinese warlords are all too small to be worth much and Japan is incompetent. Go it alone!

    1936

Songtsen Gampo: "Fellow Kings, let us now decide upon our political strategy. There are 3 major factions we could align to. As all of us refuse to ally with the Bolshewiks, that leaves us with two real options.
    The Axis and the Allies.
Both could be the stepping stone of our campaign to achieve world-peace through Tibetan domination."

Trisung Detsen: "You are right, but there are severe disadvantages. Germany is likely to torture and oppress the European people, while Great Britain has already started to occupie our fellow English neighbours. They have recently attacked our country and have made our brothers in Bhutan a puppet. Let it be our first objective to free them!"

Songtsen Gampo: "I see your point, but how can we free the people of Asia and the world without strong allies? How are we supposed to free Bhutan before building up a huge force to counter the British Empire?"

Tri Ralpachen: "You two have very valid arguments. From what I see, neither joining a faction, nor attacking a faction is lucrative for us."

Songtsen Gampo: "Let us handle this the old way! Sending a few raids into India will solve the British Problem. I can handle it."

Trisung Detsen: "Don't start that discussion again, great Emperor. Dont waste the last 6 years! I have a new idea. Why don't we start our peace-machine by attacking some of the Warlords. Once we are finished with China, we can invade Japan. By then we should have what the westerners call an "industrial backbone"."

Songtsen Gampo: "Alright. But do not forget our Tibetan saying:

Miyi lega khii tsche, miyi schugu meta the!
Please draft our strategies until 1943 to the best you can."

(The saying translated: When a dog does the work of a man, his tail will burn - means that you shouldn't copy other people )

    August 1937

    King Songtsen Gampo:
"As the highest of us Kings I would like to start by giving my report about our military situation. I hope that you, King Trisung Detsen, have prepared a report regarding our economical strength. King Tri Ralpachen, you are supposed to give a report regarding possible strategies in our fight to achieve peace.

The "Bod Gyalkhab Tschenpo gi Magmi" (Army of the Greater Kingdom of Tibet) can be regarded as one of Asias strongest Armies. With a total of 6 highly skilled and well equipped divisions, we are capable of invading nearly any Asian Country, Japan and Nationalist China being the only nations that could put up a fight.
Out of our 6 Divisions, we have got
2 Militia Divisions with 1 Artillery Brigade each
4 Infantry Divisions with 2 Artillery Brigades each

Currenty, we are building a serial of Mountain Divisions and will soon have the best Sherpas of Tibet and the Himalayan Regions under our command.
I recommend that we get a connection to the pacific to be able to develop and deploy ships to be able to conquer faraway countries. If we fail to do so quickly, there will be no chance of catching up to the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The "Bodpai namdru tsa tschenpo" (Holy Tibetan Airforce) currently consist of 0 planes. We are planning to extend in this area once we have secured some industrial provinces from China."

    Trisung Detsen:
"That was a wonderful report, glorious first Dharma King. There is not much to say about our economy, we are able to sustain ourselves through a mix of trades and exploitation of the very valuable Tibetan minerals.
Our Industrial Capacity is 23, meaning we are one of the most advanced Asian nations. We are among the highest industrialised nations in the world!"

    Tri Ralpachen:
"Before I outline the strategies I have developed, I would like to give you a short sommery of events. Some western nation had a civil war, I believe it was Spain. From what our spies have gathered, the major nations of europed intervened and the republicans won. As far as we know, that was a major blow to the axis and can be a factor in our future war against Great Britain, should Spain decide to join the Allies.

Unnoticed by us and our spies, Japan and China had a military incident that resulted into total war. We recently got note that Shanxi managed to annex Manchukuo. As you know, that made our situation even worse. It limits our military possibilities, as the Chinese states, that are working together, gain ground.

On the bright side, Japanese forces that seemed encircled and cut-off managed to capture half of Manchukuo back. That was a brilliant offensive, Japan must have some truely genius Generals.

    Now to our strategy:
I recommend doing nothing. Well, for now. Declaring war right now will make us appear like a huge threat, specially because the Japanese-Chinese war is going quite slow and the Europeans are merely staring at each other.
Our goal is to invade China in July 1938. They should be occupied with the Japanese, allowing us to swiftly capture major centers of industry. Afterwards, we are going to turn against the British and liberate our Indian friends. in July 1940, we should be able to carry out an invasion against Japan.

These are our strategic objectives, I currently cannot think of any alternatives. We really need to get our war industry going to be able to win huge battles in the limited timeframe we have. His Holliness the 13th Dalai Lama predicted that a war between a Greater Germany and the Russians will break out in 1941 or 1942. We need to be able to attack the Russians by then."

Huh, the Japanese did well? That's actually unusual. Also, doing nothing is always a policy option.

Yes, I had to act quickly to get any Chinese Land at all. They puppeted NatChi pretty fast! I believe by around August 1939 NatChi no longer was independent.

    30. October 1937
    Songtsen Gampo:
Great Kings, let me explain the recent development. I have sent some spies to China to find out how far they have processed with their armament plans. I am very delighted to tell you that China still is a force we can easily manage. Japan, on the other hand, should be a fierce enemy. Their army is advancing agaist China and their belligerent actions made them a huge threat to us.
Trisung Detsen, I recommend that you move to Germany. I have sent a telegram, stating that we are going to send a Tibetan Representative to establish Trade Agreements. Word is that Germany is likely to face a Crisis, with a serious lack of resources. In exchange for Tibetan minerals, they will give you an insight into German secret warfare techniques.

    China, 30. October 1937

    26. May 1938
    Songtsen Gampo:

Some time has passed, as you know, I've spent all my time recruiting new soldiers and watching the Japanese advances. One of our western advisors, whom we generally call Myth, gave us a wrong impression of Japan, he has been fired. While we believed him and thought of Japan as no more than a mediocre nation, they have recently proven themselves in this war against China.

Japan is at the doorstep of Communist Chinas Capital City and advances deeply into Nationalist China. Even though I managed to occupie the Chinese capital several times hundreds of years ago, I am deeply impressed by their offensive.

    2. October 1938
    A letter from Trisong Detsen:

Fellow Kings of Tibet, I have heared of your great actions and am glad that our recruiting process is doing great. In Germany, I am learning a lot of new things. First of all, Germany now is the "Deutsches Reich". They are pushing to get more land and have been granted a huge portion of Czechoslovakia.
I can tell that they are gearing up for war, just as His Holliness the 13th Dalai Lama predicted. I am trying to stop them, but all I am able to do is watch.
Once I have returned, I will help you implement superior German techniques into our Tibetan repertoir: I have found out, that Germany too has developed the Blitzkrieg technique. While they believe that this is a great new tactic they have created, we know they are wrong. Songtsen Gampo, do you remember your cavalry raids into China? Fast moving attacks, surrounding the enemy, crushing their morale? Yes, what we used to call "Glorious Raid" now is called Blitzkrieg. Well, now people are using Panzers...

Anyway, take a look at the image and see for yourself. After having Austria for lunch, Germany just dined with the Czechs.

    7. December 1938
    Songtsen Gampo:

To the east, Japan is now showing their full strength. Those who believed Japan was a Papertiger are now really proven wrong. In a new offensive, they occupied all provinces of Communist China. They still refuse to surrender, but their war is definitely lost.
We have to put more effort into modernising our Army or we will have no chance to gain Chinese ground. Should Japan win the war before we have taken our fair share, we will be surrounded by Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and Japan. That would be a terrible situation!

After a short talk with His Hollines the 14th Dalai Lama, who recently aquired the position of foreign minister, he agreed that we would soon be able to declare war against China and has started to increase the Chinese threat and lower our neutrality. Without enough threat, our Karma would go bad: We dont want that to happen, do we?

As a response, we start moving our Divisions to the border with Yunnan and Sinkiang.

  13. #13
    18th March 1939

    General Tashi and General Tenzing:
Your Highness, King Songtsen Gampo, we have executed your order and have taken position along our border with Sinkiang and Yunnan. Our troops are ready to strike, but I recommend mobilising to have a greater force.

    Songtsen Gampo:
I agree with your advice. However, it is too early to take such an aggressive step. His Holliness has asked the Oracle for a date to mobilise. Prepare everything, I will hold a speech on the 12. April, all Tibetans in the surrounding area shall come to the Potala.

    12. April 1939

Tibetan mass listening to the speech

    Songtsen Gampo:

    People of Tibet!

All of you know why the three Kings have returned. The great 13th has seen the danger Tibet is facing.
A danger from the east! He saw thousands monasteries burning.
Dead monks, fathers, mothers, and childrens from the western mountains of Tsang to the eastern rivers of Kham.

The Buddha statues, that are guarding Tibet, will be destroyed.
The forests of our great nation, home to thousands of animals, will be gone.
The rivers, the sources of life, will no longer dance in the wind but be full of blood.

Our blood. The blood of our children, of our families.

It is not long before China will become triumphant and attempt to destroy our dignity,
our culture, our religion and even our language.
They will try to rewrite history and will oppose those who speak freely.

    Tibetans will suffer.
But historians shall not say that monks and regular Tibetan people took up arms just to save their country!
More than Tibetans, the people of Europe, of Asia and of America will suffer.
Not thousands, but millions of them will die. The war that is going to break loose won’t have a winner.
Every single nation is going to loose. Men, women and even children are going to die.

For this war has to be stopped, the peaceful people of Tibet are going to take up arms and
secure a peace to last thousands of years.

    A peace that shall prevail.

Just as His Holiness is predicting it.

For Tibet, for humanity, and for peace!
The world shall remember this day.

Tibetan children listening to the words of the King and praying for a swift Tibetan victory

Tibetan men and women marching to the barracks

Tick, Tock... Tibet has finally woken up!

    II. War

    1. May 1939

    King Tri Ralpacen:

We have received note that Germany started the war in europe today.
What an unholy occasion! Our armies were set to start marching today as well...!

    King Songtsen Gampo:

And nothing will change that decision.
    General Tenzing, start the offensive.

    3.May 1939

    General Tenzing:
The war is going very well. What a start! Today, our first battle ended in enormous victory. Fighting on two fronts against two Chinese nations has proven to be difficult, but our armies are steadily marching forward.

Yunnan definitely is ours with this astonishing victory.

    9. May 1939

    Letter from King Trisong Detsen:

I've been told we started the war with a great victory. This is a short message to tell you that Germany has started its offensive to the east.
German Panzers are rolling into Poland in this very second.

    11. May 1939

General Tashi is running to the Potala, residence of the three Kings.

"Kings! It is working! it is working! it is working! It is working! it is working! it is working! It is working! it is working! it is working! It is working! it is working! it is working!

The medals His Holliness blessed worked perfectly fine and dodged all bullets. No Tibetan soldier lost his life in the recent Battle against Yunnan while we managed to kill 275 hostile soldiers!

Invading the Nationalists? That's pretty ambitious! It'll be interesting to see how you do.

I'll be reading this. His Holiness the 13th seems to be more belligerent than he is in his current incarnation. Of course, with the advantage of foresight it's understandable if he ganks them before they gank Tibet

    Will there be Yetis?

Please step out of character for a few lines to tell us which mods you're using.

Thanks for your comments. As this is my first attempt to write an AAR, Im very grateful for any input I receive.

Yes, I was planning to invade NatChi, but it didn't work out as intended. You'll see in my updates

The 13th Dalai Lama is not belligerent at all, he is just looking for a way to finally achieve world peace. He really has foresight! =)

I am using the 99 colours mod, a fix for weather (which apparently is not working, still have 50.2% coverage), and I adapted the files for my alternative history. New leaders for Tibet (the Kings), slighty more Industry (I think 4 or so more base IC) and a plus in leadership. All of this is covered in my alternate history .
I also did some slider changes.

  19. #19
Regarding Yetis, lets see! There will be a very strong Tibetan unit to be revealed soon, though
