athlon x2
some gig ram
nvidia 9500

Im on gentoo with wine 1.1.38.

Best thing is it interates with awesome wm where other games have problems.

Thanks for the guide.

Successful install

Hi!

I just want to share my experiences of a successful install of HoI3 on Linux.

My setup:
  • ATI Radeon HD4200 512Mb with proprietary drivers (built in on an ASUS M4A785T-M motherboard)
  • Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
  • Wine-1.1.28
  • 1920x1200 display

I followed the HOWTO , although I used Wine-1.1.43 initially and installed in the default wine-directory. Everything worked except that the game changed resolution on my screen and much of the text in the game was invisible, making the game unplayable.

I fixed the resolution problem by setting a virtual desktop with my resolution in winecfg (Graphics tab) and I changed the resolution in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron III/settings.txt.

I had to remove wine-1.1.43 using the packet manager and manually download 1.1.28 from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html. Installation was then done with
Code:
sudo dpkg -i wine_1.1.28~winehq0~ubuntu~9.04-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
As you can see this package was built for 9.04, but it worked in 9.10 too.

So, there's a serious regression in Wine somewhere between 1.1.28 and 1.1.43. Stick to 1.1.28 and HoI3 will run. The only thing I have noticed so far is a mouse pointer shadow problem when the game loads.

Sadly, HoI2, which seemed to work in Wine-1.1.43, crashes when I start a new scenario under Wine-1.1.28.

Tested and working on Arch linux 64 with latest wine release, without problems.
Unfortunately I can report about 20-30% speed loss in 1936 scenario.
Hardware: Intel Q8300 (quad 2.5ghz) 6gb ddr2 800mhz, Nvidia GT 130 (9600GT).

Semper Fi purchased from GamersGate, installation works like a charm.

Game runs fine, but so far I've had my game as Italy consistently crash at France surrender event (retried 2 times with same behavior).
No idea whether it is due to running the game with Wine or a game problem...

out of the box? With wine tricks? What are your settings to play the game?

Edit: After installing Hoi3 + SF from GG on wine 1.2-rc5 I can confirme, that it is no longer a problem to play HoI3 with Linux.

I installed the game, after this I used winetricks (all of the d3dx9 files, vcrun2005, ddr=open, dsoundsbug).

I'm having problems :(

System info: Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64, Radeon HD 58010 with proprietary drivers (version in Ubuntu repos)

I use PlayOnLinux to manage prefixes and wine versions. I use winetricks and PlayOnLinux to install the required files.
Game installs, launches fine, music plays. It always crashes right before displaying the menu (actually it freezes). Logs don't say anything except that it happens right after 'frontend.cpp' takes over, I assume this is the menu interface.
I've tried with different wine versions (1.1.32, 1.1.37, 1.1.40, 1.1.42, 1.2 and some earlier ones).

Any tips?

Hello,

I followed the instructions, but it seemed my version of ubuntu mounted the disc as media/HEARTS OF IRON I (sic)

It didn't recognize this, so then I used the playonlinux script, and everything installed, and I made all the proper edits.

Now, my problem is that it won't update (I click on the patch, and it says that my game isn't installed), and it won't even start. When I click on the menu item in wine, it creates a new window on the bar of open tasks, but nothing pops up, and after a second it disappears. I tried putting in the terminal line in the OP, but it just gave me this:
yanis@yanis-desktop:~$ cd $HOME/.wine-hoi3/drive_c/Program\ Files/Paradox\ Interactive/Hearts\ of\ Iron\ III/
bash: cd: /home/yanis/.wine-hoi3/drive_c/Program Files/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron III/: No such file or directory
yanis@yanis-desktop:~$ env WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-hoi3 wine hoi3game.exewine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\hoi3game.exe"

I am not sure where to go from here.

I have never used PlayOnLinux, but the command output just means your HoI3 is not installed in Wine environment under .wine-hoi3.

I use Ubuntu as well, same name for the game when in the drive, but never had any problems with it, so don't think it is related.

Your wine probably has a separate environment for HoI3 so to install the patch you need to run the patch in that environment.

For example:
Code:
env WINEPREFIX="/home/{your_user_name}/.wine-hoi3" wine /home/{your_user_name}/Downloads/SemperFi203.exe

You need to fill in your username and know in which Wine environment HoI3 is installed. In the example that is: "/home/{your_user_name}/.wine-hoi3"

Hope this helps you in the right direction

It turned out that I made a complete newb mistake and forgot to put quotes around the "HEARTS OF IRON I" disk thing, and afterward, I forgot to capitalize it! Thank you so much for your help, after I figured out my mistake, I've reinstalled, installed the patch as you said, and all is well. As I recall, it was buggy on windows, but the patch has made it playable, and I am very impressed with how great it runs on linux.

ONKL, first try to isolate the potential issue. Does this work for other games and only HOI not working? If it fails when trying to lay other games using the same method then it's an OS/computer issue.

Hi

I have just upgraded from fedora 13 to fedora 14, and now Hoi3 is not working. Was working fine before the upgrade.
I have this error just after starting or loading a game probably related to a sound problem.

Sound is working fine in other applications and y have the music start

Yes, i have set up all the elments in the first post. Everything was working before my upgrade. It's a sound problemn because if set up the options with no sound, evrything is working. May be it's a regression in, the last wine or pulseaudio package, i don't know.
