Notice that training grounds tempt priests away from further studies. That can be rephrased as training grounds increase the odds of your priests becoming martial clerics. That is not such bad in my opinion. In the end, with the right stats, a bright kid will become E3 or E4 no matter if you have training grounds or not. (new)
What this chart means to me is, buildings about martial education tend to keep the kid away from becoming a misguided warrior. On the other hand, buildings that affect ecclesiastical education tend to keep the kid away from becoming a detached priest and (except training grounds) push the kid to becoming a scholarly theologian. Same can be said about intrigue and stewardship, and while diplomacy buildings are not so hard on pushing the kid to D3, they push a little harder to D4 than the others that push to their consecutive fourth tiers. Easy things first before talking about all traits, if you have got yourself a bastard who is vengeful or suspicious (especially vengeful), he is a primary candidate for being an illusive shadow (I4) if sent to court education. There is no other bonus like the bonus of a vengeful bastard for I4. A second option can be martial education for vengeful bastards. Not as sharp as the bonus of intrigue, there is still a very big bonus. On the other hand, although being a bastard is not penalized in any way for martial education, being vengeful is penalised somewhat. (new)
Ecclesiastical education may seem a good path for honest but not vengeful bastards but it is not. Being a bastard is penalized really heavily for ecclesiastical education and this honest-and-not-vengeful bonus for bastards does not compensate it. Long story short, ignoring small bonuses and maluses, if not stat-wise unsuitable (intrigue<4), a vengeful bastard should go to court education since he is the best candidate for I4. (new)
