@ Herbert West -> Kaiserreich timeline's syndicalist movement is a combination of RL socialist, bolshevik and corporate state ideas. Keep in mind that both Hitler and Mussolini were de facto socialists in terms of economic policy. Plus, the British minister pool in Kaiserreich is very wide - it includes not only trade unionists, but also sufrragettes, Scottish and Welsh national activists and so on. So Mosley fits the picture pretty well, I guess. :)

@ RGB, Zuckergußgebäck, trekaddict -> Keep in mind that your works may be used in the upcoming Congress of the Third Internationale ;)

Ah, okay. The only KR paths I take are Mongolia, Monarchist Orthodox Russia, and indipendent Balkan-stomping Hungary:)

Socialist revival of 1936

(from: From Marx to Horner and Guérin; socialism in Western Europe before the Second Great War by Anthony Blair, London 1999)

During the rather peaceful decade of 1925-1935, the worldwide opinion began to accept the polarisation of Europe between the socialist West and the imperialist East. Worldwide German hegemony was sufficient to preserve stability, but not strong enough to topple the triumphant left-winged movements of France and Britain. However, the principles of material dialectism and historical inevitability soon proved this balance of power to be fragile.

Let's focus on the socialist world first. First days of 1936 brought the downfall of Marceau Pivet, the creator of the Second Commune of France, due to a lack of reaction towards German persecution of trade unions. Elections were held and a new goverment was organised, with participation of all socialist parties of France. Daniele Guérin, one of the most charismatic anarchists of the time, took Pivet's place, with his followers occupying military posts and intelligence, while orthodox syndicalists were put in charge of industry. The most curious choice was the promotion of Nestor Makhno - a former Ukrainian anarchists to the post of Foreign Commissar. Sébastien Faure remained in his post as the head of Commune.

New French government

The Berlin Stock Crash of February mobilised the socialist world. Republic of Bengal was first to act, organising a social-democrat government and attempting to begin cooperation with other Asian socialist movements. On the other side of the world, in Mexico, Vincente Lombardo Toledano, chairman of the Socialist Party seized power after Zapata's death, begining an intensified armament programme, aimed at the increasingly influentian right-wing movements of the USA, noteably Long's "America First".

May saw the rise of socialist government in Bolivia, as well as seizure of power by more radical socialist groups in Bengal. Later that summer, Ukraine got engulfed by chaos, as Nikita Khrushchev attempted a coup d'etat. Even though his attempt to overthrow king Vasily I and his ataman Skoropadsky failed, the resulting deorganisation was enough to effectively cripple Ukrainian industry and army. The triumphant socialist march ended in November, when roits in Rio de Janeiro toppled the burgeoise government, bringing Astrojildo Pereira to power.

All this, however, was overshadowed by two great socialist congresses; one in Paris and the second in London. The first one was held on the 3-19 of May, with delegates from all over the world participating. The combined vioce of the Third Internationale promised help for Spanish, American, Italian and Indian socialist movements. The questions of sexual equality and combined struggle against the burgeoise have also been brought up. Delegates from Mexico and Centroamerica, however, left the assembly on the tenth day, when comrades Glais (Brtain) and Dunois (France) declared that the question of Euroasian revolution should be prioritised before the American one. Nevertheless, even without their complete participation, the Congress resulted in unification of worldwide socialism.

The second congress, held in September and October, was aimed to reform British policy towards both the Internationale and imperialist world. Just as in the French case, the Congress created a coalition of various options; the Maximists, led by Oswald Mosley, remained in control of industrial resorts, while the Federationists, led by Arthur Horner, kept their authority over Union's internal policy and foreign relations. The biggest change came in military affairs, with the Autonomists' proposition of organising national armies being accepted by the assembly. Not everything went smooth, however; elderly comrade Snowden suddenly annouced his resignation from the post. The shocked Congress was unable to elect his succesor, with every faction supporting their own candidate. Ultimately, it has been decided that until 1937, a collective body will take over Snowden's duties.

Not surprisingly, the imperialists and capitalists responed with ferocity to socialist revival. Germany dissolved the Free Workers' Union, Spain delegalised the CNT-FAI, beginning a purge among all leftist movement in the country and the newly crowned king of Canada, Edward VII, denounced all the leftist movements. Italian Federation acted with surprising dynamism, proposing a unified Catholic front against socialism just days after Julius IV succeeded Pius XI in February. In light of those events, the Internationale once again revised her priorities, setting sight upon the USA. The presidental elections there gave power to Charles Curtis, closely followed by three other candidates. One of them, Jack Reed of the Combined Syndicates of America, quicly rallied his followers and supporters in Chicago, contesting the elections' results. Simmilar thing happened in the South, where Huey Long started organising America First's "Minute Men" militia.

On the New Year's Eve of 1936, the world was as far from stability, as possible. Thus came the downfall of "Pax Germanica".

Big game's afoot!

And wow, that's a lot of events.

Kaiserreich is full of them :) Although this gentleman has added some, which I'm delighted to see. Jedrek, this is a great AAR - I take it you know that in KR there is in fact no event for 'next year' to give you a Chairman? I hope you've got something planned as it can be a bit boring to go through years of war with a pictureless Congress of the Trade Unions as your head of state.

Love the Ireland events and story - really plausible and a great way to give early-game UoB something to do.

Meadow - Yup, I'm aware that there's no election event 1937 and I'm currently thinking about who to choose :) Plus, I'm wondering how to solve the American Civil War - in most my games CSA gots owned pretty soon... The most endurable and surprising state is AUS - in my last game first got reduced to 5 provinces, only to own CSA in 1939, push McArthur all the way to the Rockies in early 1940... And get repelled by USA-PSA in late 1940.

RGB - Yup, there are loads of events early in the game, but later on (post-1941), you have very little. Unless the KR team has finally managed to finish them - I forgor to check this until now ;p

Apocalypse now

(article from Daily Worker, Chicago, 21st of February, 1937)

And so it begins...

I'm writing those words on a train bound to Chicago. NYC became a dangerous place for all of us. Police and workers' militia do what they can, but Long's supporters are simply too numerous. I've heard that military had to surround the White House to prevent the mob from devastating the building. Comrade Reed ordered us to relocate the redaction to Chicago, where CSA alone is capable of keeping America First at bay. Let's hope he's right. I have a feeling that soon there would by no place in America safe for us.

I must admit that I'm full of admiration towards president Curtis. He has shown great charisma during the negotiations in Chicago. It was good to see that finally the president of the United States has managed to understand the oppression and strain the capitalists put on workers. And he acted fast - his inauguration took place on the 21st of January, and by next sunset, he was in Chicago, ready to begin the talks. More; he even agreed with the majority of Combined Syndicates' demands. After the first agreements had been signed three weeks ago, it seemed that finally the country will be stabilised.

Charles Curtis, the 34th president of the USA
But no. That snake, Huey Long, demanded his admission to the talks. Curtis and Reed were quick to reject that foolishness; America First represented the rich, the Churches and the corrupt. Should Long or his representatives appear in Chicago, the compromise we have only recently achieved would be lost. But the senator from Louisiana was relentless; he replied by mobilising his militia - the Minutemen - and organising riots in southern states. After seven days, we lost contact with our correspondent from Atlanta. After ten days, Norman Nigh reported that Florida got overrun and that he had to flee northwards. He's now with me on the train - and looks like a shadow of his former self, terrified and shaking.

Huey Long
On the 14th, Long finally made a public announcement. He accused Reed and Curtis of "conspiring" against the "will of the American People" and declared that, should his demands continue to be ignored, he'd organise a "March of Freedom" towards Washington and Chicago. And that was not an empty threat. I saw Long's men yesterday. They are fanatics, blind with the desire to "burn the red devil", even if this means overthrowing the legally elected president. Even combined, our militia and the US military are barely able to delay them, not to mention pushing them back.

Jack Reed, leader of the Combined Syndicates of America
I hope Reed and Curtis can somehow stop this madness... I'll keep you informed, comrades readers.

Ernest Hemingway

I started a UOB game on Kaiserreich but I have one serious question. Where the heck are the ground leaders???!!!

It's a known bug from Beta IV, which was caused by UoB sharing leader IDs with the United Kingdom (U07, IIRC). It has been removed in Beta V, along with a simmilar problem regarding French leaders. Try reinstalling Kaiserreich Beta V on a clean copy of HoI2 - perhaps some leftover from Beta IV are the cause?

EDIT: My, my, my, the 50th post is mine... :p Come on, people, don't only read, try to comment! ;)

It's in my opinion kind of ironic that a definitely leftist Britain endorses the US Government although they would do the exact opposite in real life, especially during the 30s, 40s and 50s.

But this is a different America...so :D

Transatlantic Syndicalism Forever!

I was hoping that some people would oppose defining Hemingway as a staunch American communist... Well, looks like I was wrong. But don't worry, Orwell remains unassigned - so far. :p

Spencer_123, RGB -> Thanks for encouragement. I'm currently writing events about the Second International Congress - with three new socialist governments in the world and another one closing (remember CNT-FAI!), the time has come to reform the system... Again. And besides, this blank portrait as UoB HoS is starting to annoy me.

Austria Hungary - Did my advice work?

I was about to comment on Heningway, but decided to desist because it's actually kinda cool that way.

Oh, and communists/leftists have no shortage of excellent writers on their side, anyway. Feels almost appropriate.

Can't wait to see what events you'll come up with! I wrote the Canadian surrender events to the UoB and CSA for Beta V, and created the new flag for the UoB as well, so I'm naturally very interested and excited by what you come up with for my favourite fictitious country. I actually have one event that didn't make it into the mod, about Comrade Blair (OTL's Orwell) publishing this timeline's version of 1984... but in this case it's a thoroughly optimistic argument for continued socialism for the next 40 years! I can PM it to you if you want to use it, it fires in 1944.

I hope you will indeed release the events you've made at the end of this AAR, or before - particularly the Second International Congress events.

You write very well, this is a really compelling AAR and I look forward to Britain bringing down the imperialists!

Just a teaser... ;)

Meadow -> I'd be delighted if you shared the event :)

I love authors that create their own events. <3

On a more serious note, wouldn't it be more practical to make Ireland an enormous, immobile aircraft carrier?
