Field Marshal Ivan Koniev takes command of Soviet troops in the area. Stalin orders him to use whatever means necessary to bring about soviet victory. And he does, Koniev sends hundreds of tanks along with 450,000 troops to crush the Finnish Mannerheim line once and for all. After a hard 2 day battle, the Red army is finally victorious.
viipuriround3.png

Another 450,000 Soviet troops converge on the area of Joensuu, and once again best the Finnish army, but only after a disproportionate amount of force.
battleofjoensuu.png

The soviet army begins to benefit from its new combat experience.

1940 begins with another overview of Soviet technological progress.
tech1940.png

The Red Air Force has also suffered fairly heavy combat casualties, especially in its ground attack formations.
airlosses.png

On January 23rd, 1940, both sides have had enough. Stalin agrees to an immediate ceasefire, and a peace treaty is negotiated in Moscow. Finland is allowed to remain its independence, with the Finns relinquishing the southeastern border region to the Soviet Union. Although the Red Army won in the end, it is a Pyhrric victory, with many thousands of Red army soldiers dead.

In March, Germany decides to launch its own expansionist campaign in Scandinavia, by invading Denmark and Norway.
fallweserubung.png

Denmark falls within days.

And elite German mountaineering troops land in Norway.
germansinnorway-1.png

Then, in May of 1940, the German army unleashes its wrath on the Western allies, by launching a huge offensive into the low countries, with the aim of bypassing the French Maginot line of fortresses.

It's always a pain too fight the Finnish Winter War, the winter attrition kills against the lowly organized Soviet Armies and even with 3 or 4 times as many men and tanks its a tough fight.
Normally I tend to amphibious assault in the west and annex and liberate Finland as Socialist. This is so great so far, Soviet World conquest.
Bring the glory of communism to all the world.

It is, but I am actually pretty glad it was a tough fight in game. In real life, the Finns held out till march I think, and inflicted a lot more casualties on the soviet army than my Soviet Union took.

German armies plunge into the Low countries, shattering all allied resistance in their path. The Governments of Belgium and the Netherlands flee into exile to their colonial territories, and the French Army proves completely helpless to stop the German onslaught.
unstoppable.png

Stalin decides to use spare production capacity to improve the Soviet Union's air defense network. Radar installations and anti-aircraft guns are being installed in many major cities and important military airfields.
airdefenses.png

On June 2nd, Norway decides that further resistance is pointless, and they submit to German control.
norwayfalls-1.png

The French army has now totally collapsed. French soldiers are fleeing their positions and retreating further into the country. The French capital of Paris also falls to German troops, and approximately 50,000 dutch troops are trapped at Compiegne.
frenchcollapse.png

Italy then decides to join the war on Germany's side, hoping to grab territory from both France and the British.
italianentry.png

Stalin decides to put pressure on Romania to hand over control of Bessarabia. The Romanian government decides to accept Stalin's demands, and evacuates the region.
bessarabia.png

Things for Mussolini go bad right from the start. Even with a collapsing army, France still is able to brush aside Italian troops and invade northern Italy! Stalin reportedly laughed so loud upon hearing the news that half of Moscow could hear him.
lol.png

Victories in Italy are not enough to save the French army however, and on July 9th, the French government surrenders to Germany. French General Charles Degaulle however, sets up his own Free French government in Africa, while The rest of France comes under the control of a puppet government in Vichy.
frenchsurrender.png

Stalin is shocked at how fast France has fallen, but is even more shocked when distrubing news comes from the far east. Chiang Kai Shek surrenders to the Japanese, and runs into exile in the United States. "Could this be the prelude to a second Russian-Japanese war?" Stalin asks his advisers.
chinesecollapse.png

Facing possible enemies from both sides, stalin orders a massive conscription program. 36 new infantry divisions equipped with the latest in infantry weapons and armoured cars are ordered to be mobilized.
massmobilization.png

Things look like they couldn't get any worse for the allies, but they are once again proven wrong, when, on September 2nd,Germany invades the United Kingdom. The city of Norwich is captured by Elite german troops, who hold their bridgehead as the German navy throws its ships into the fray, trying to get as many troops ashore as possible.
sealion.png

The Germans begin to expand their Bridgehead, brushing aside a British territorial army division and marching into the city of London, the heart of the British empire. Winston Churchill, his government, and the royal family flee to Scotland, vowing to repulse the German assault.
londonfalls.png

The isolationist people of the United States, finally begin to realize the enormity of what is happening in Europe, and begin mobilizing for war with Germany and Japan.
USpreparation.png

British army units withdrawn from Africa arrive in the UK, and immediately launch a counter offensive. They succeed in retaking Norwich, but fail to destroy the German army occupying London. Even worse, the Germans break the encirclement and take Dover.
germandefeat.png

The Germans also land in Northern Ireland. At this point, the German navy is beginning to suffer irreparable losses in cruisers and transport vessels.
germanulster.png

By October 22nd, German reinforcements arrive, including elite mountain infantry, who are more than a match for the British home army. However, the British have successfully liberated London.

Stalin orders the mass production of 800 brand new T-34 tanks. These tanks will become part of 4 new armoured corps.
t-34s.png

T-34's during maneuvers.
t34_76_6.jpg

The red army also continues to raise its combat readiness.
gderaise.png

The new year 1941 begins. Things are not looking good for the allies, as they are unable to muster enough strength to kick the Germans out of Wales and South England, at least not until the Spring begins. In North africa, Mussolini's army has failed to conquer Egypt, and is now locked in stalemate along the Libyan border. Also, Hungary and Romania joined the Axis powers after the fall of France.

W.O.W.!

Do you use some AI modifications? I've never seen this happen before - a successful invasion of Britain by AI controlled Germany?! Just wow...

I don't think he did, in my games on rare occasions the AI Germans managed to seize all of the UK in one of my Canadian games, so I had to liberate the home isles. And in an American game it happened again. Ofcourse this is twice in like hundreds of games so it is very rare but I don't think he modified the German AI.

I have done nothing to the German AI. This is Arma v1.2's AI in action. Ever since I patched to this version, I have noticed a very impressive boost in the AI's use of amphibious attacks. An AI sealion also seems to depend on a few factors. First, the number of units positioned in the UK. Second, the amount of transports that the German navy possesses. This is actually the second time in a row that I have seen an AI sealion. The first time was when playing as a Nazi Sweden. On that occasion, the Germans managed to completely conquer the UK, only to lose it once the Americans joined the war and landed 300,000 men to liberate the island. The US AI is also improved, and I should see them do things like invade Italy and France.

Soviet technological progress at the beginning of 1941. We are starting to catch up in the areas of air and land warfare doctrine. The USSR has also gained the ability to construct infantry divisions equipped with armoured personnel carriers.
technology1941.png

The US begins to assert itself on the world stage, taking control of Greenland and Iceland from the British, and beginning an oil embargo against the Japanese empire.

On March the 2nd, the Axis nations invade Yugoslavia from all sides. Bulgaria even joins the war a day later.
balkanassault.png

The Italians are embarrassed yet again when Yugoslav troops occupy Venice.
lolitaly.png

When the snow melts in the UK, Churchill orders his now sizeable force to crush the German troops in England once and for all, and liberate the people of the British isles from German occupation. The Germans, whose navy cannot transport reinforcements to the area due to the naval supremacy of the Royal Navy, are powerless to stop the British onslaught.
britishoffensive.png

The new armoured corps are almost finished forming up, now only waiting for their accompanying mechanized infantry divisions to complete training.
tankcorps.png

On April 5th, the British force the surrender of the last German troops in england, and Churchill proudly announces the Liberation of southern Britain. However, northern Ireland is still under German control.
britishliberation.png

In North Africa, the British are beginning to break Mussolini's hold on Libya. Also note the failed landing in Homs, where 30,000 troops including a division of tanks were forced to surrender to Italian troops.
battleofNAfrica.png

The Kingdom of Yugoslavia falls to the axis nations, just as Italy declares war on Greece. The greeks are forced to surrender about 2 weeks later.

Stalin orders the expansion of the long neglected Soviet navy, with battleships, light aircraft carriers, and escorting destroyer flotillas being constructed.

However why did you mod IC so much? Isn't this unfair to the AI who does not know how to do massive IC production runs?

A very good question. I modified the IC and infra production time and costs mostly because I find that the more middle tier nations (Canada, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Australia, etc.) have a very hard time trying to build up their industrial bases so they can make an impact on the war. Even smaller nations now have more of a chance to become decently strong. I will admit however, that the AI did not build as many factories as I expected them too.

The Red army continues its mobilization for a possible war with Germany. over 2 million men have been mobilized on the western frontier, along with thousands of tanks and many thousands of artillery pieces and heavy weaponry. Behind the front, the Red Air Force is also forming up, with many thousands of aircraft at its disposal.

Readiness also continues to raise.

July 26th, 1941 Moscow.

Stalin had just started sleeping when his telephone on his night table began to rang.

"Stalin speaking".He answered.
"Comrade Stalin,"The aide on the other end began. "You must come to the Kremlin at once, there is an emergency."
"What kind of emergency?" Stalin asked.
"We are under attack comrade."The aide replied.
"WHAT!!!BY WHOM!?" Stalin shouted in both anger and surprise.
"The Germans comrade. They have launched a full scale land and air attack on our glorious motherland. Please comrade, you must return to the Kremlin for an emergency breifing."
"All right then, summon the rest of the cabinet to the Kremlin meeting room at once." Stalin hung up the phone. "Son of a bitch." He cursed, before getting his uniform.

The German storm breaks loose first in the Ukraine and the Baltics, defeating Soviet troops in both locations.
firstbattles.png

Stalin orders that important factories in the west be dismantled and relocated far to the east, out of the reach of German armies.
industrytransfer.png

The German offensive in the Baltics continues, with the Red Army falling back to the river Daugava in the Latvian SSR.
balticsfalling.png

The German army begins to hit Soviet positions around the Pripyat marshes, forcing the Red army to retreat through the swamps into the Belarussian SSR.
moredefeat.png

In the Ukraine, the Germans get too cocky, and for the first time, are stopped dead by the Red army.
firstvictory.png

The Germans also decide to strike from the sea. Amazingly, the Germans now possess aircraft carriers, which they use to hit the Soviet naval base at Murmansk.
murmanskraid.png

The Germans begin to expand their offensive in the Ukraine, defeating Soviet troops at Vinnitsa.
battleofvinnitsa.png

Retreat also continues in the north.
jekaplisretreat.png

The Germans launch an assault on Kiev. Here, Stalin orders Marshall Rokossovsky to hold the city at all costs. After a tough battle, Rokossovsky's army is able to fight off the German attack.
battleofKiev.png

Stalin considers ordering the destruction of the Dnieper dam. He decides that it is not necessary, due to the fact that Soviet troops are still moving through the area.
donetzflood.png

The Germans hit the city of Kiev again, and then, on their third try, are able to force Marshall Rokossovsky to abandon the city.
3rdkiev.png

The German Luftwaffe then begins a bombing campaign in the Moscow area, and the Soviet air force flies into the air to meet them.
airbattle.png

On November 11th, the war turns global, when the empire of Japan launches an attack on the US naval base at pearl harbour, and declares war on the allies.

The US joins the allied military alliance, and joins the war against Germany.
USAvsgermany.png

Gameplay note. I decided by the winter of 1941 to raise the game's difficulty level from normal to hard. Germany now has more IC than the Soviet Union does.
gamedifficulty.png

Even in the heart of winter, the German army continues its assault, attacking in the center of the line at Zhlobin.
battleofZhlobin.png

The Red army reaches full defensive combat effectiveness.
gdemax.png

More airbattles rage, this time against a large formation of 400 Romanian bombers who have been bombing moving soviet tanks. The Romanians are easily brushed aside.
airbattleroslavl.png

The US begins to send economic aid and supplies to the Soviet Union under its "Lend Lease" program.

By January 2nd, 1942, the Frontlines have more or less settled. Large amounts of Soviet territory are in German hands, including most of the Ukraine, and all of Belorussia. The situation is only set to get worse once the snows melt...

I just wanted to ask if you could show your army stats. I was wondering about the size of your army, because the germans seem to have numerical parity or even superiority almost everywhere.
I find your AAR very interesting; I started to play a USSR game about the time you started your AAR, and in my game germany wasn't that strong... (they didn't even dare to DoW me, so I had to do the dirty work myself in spring '43)
