Moderators Edit : Since we seem to be getting these immigration questions every day, this thread will now serve as the grand source for all immigration questions. All future questions re immigration/migration will be placed here if new threads are begun.

I'll keep this short and snappy. I know how to get immigration and what to do, but I have a problem. I'm playing a game as Colombia, conquered Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru. I have abysmal health care. I have equality as my national value and I am a democracy with a liberal party. It is 1873. My plurality is 48. I have 120 industry points and same for prestige. But I have no immigration at all. What should I do?

Raise taxes
Raise tariffs
Enact and do not fund social reforms

Re-train as many clergy as you can.

Any of those will start to increase plurality, which is good for Democracies in general and makes you at least a little competitive with the US.

to repeat, plurality is one of the most important elements in determining if a nation will attract immigrants. If you are playing Revolutions, the USA starts with 50 plurality, and as it industrializes will almost invariably go liberal and gain the additional 25 plurality via events. high literacy increases the rate of plurality growth, as does being a democracy.

if you want to compete with the USA for title greatest immigration magnet, keep these points in mind.

Haha, thanks for making this the grand immigration megathread! :D Anyway, it's 1896 and as Columbia I have reached 8th Great Power status and snatched all of Bolivia, Chile and bits of Western Brazil. My population is 10 mil and I have been wondering...where is a Columbian Socialist Party?! I've got education rising, social reform rising, and everything else more or less. Plurality is a nice 75 and I could shoot to 100 if I could just get a socialist government as I know they add on a hefty 25 plurality when I was playing as Portugal. Any help?

You should have a socialist party from 1848 on

what is your current stand for political parties?

Need to have at least right to ban to make parties available.

All parties allowed, all trade unions allowed, meetings allowed and everything liberal as opposed to authoritarian you can think of on that level. I'm playing VIP btw, though I doubt that makes much of a difference. Where can I find the list of Colombian parties? Perhaps I need to add/modify/activate the socialist party because at 1897 it is a little disconcerting having only (anarcho)liberals and cons. and reacts.

Party information is stored in the db\parties folder. I assume the file for Columbia would be COL.csv or something like that (I'm at work, so I can't check right now).

Colombia in South America is CLM, Columbia in Northwestern North America is COL.

Thanks, really helped. It seems that a socialist party doesn't come into existence until 1900. But that's only three years so I'll wait. But a note to all, if you want plurality get a liberal AND a socialist party in because together they give you 50!!! plurality! Where can you go wrong?

Here's one: How do I get British nationals to emmigrate from the Home Islands to the colonies in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India?

this is one of the least properly modelled elements of immigration in Victoria. Basically, it doesn't happen, because the resources in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India are not overly attractive to POPs migrating to colonies. Basically you end up employing most of your POPs as craftsmen/clerks, and the remaining farmer/labourer POPs tend if they do emigrate to go to places with Gold, or to other nations.

In the VIP mod, we basically had to give up and script events to add English pops to Canada, Australia and New Zealand to be able to model it correctly.

In the end, the model of pop migration is based on universal settings to be applicable to all nations, and this works against historical modelling of unique situations.

Hmmm...off hand, do you (or anyone else) happen to have those event scripts lying around anywhere? Would I be able to paste them into a file in order to make them applicable to my game?

yes. Download the VIP mod (VIP:R 0.1), and just have it install into an empty desktop folder.

then, go to the file scenarios/vipscen/events/VIP_flavor/VIP_flavor_England.txt and you'll find the ones for ENG settlement in AUS and NWZ. Events start with 157441.

And these will work with both Revolutions and Non-Revolutions, just copy and paste into a file like say db/events/England.txt

The Canada events will be added in the upcoming VIP:R 0.2

You've got to overfill an RGO somewhere. As Britain you do got some provinces with many high leveled pops. Split the farmers/labourers and turn like large clergy pops into them to. Once the RGO if full and some farmers/labourers are unemployed they will most likely migrate to your colonies somewhere. Just remember to grant statehood when you can, otherwise they'll continue going to the same state.

How can I make inmigrants to go to Buenos Aires state instead of La Rioja when I'm playing with Argentina?

very difficult. You can not expand the RGOs in La Rioja and hope that once they fill the immigrants will move to BA. The biggest problem is that La Rioja state has IIRC as many, maybe even one more, province as BA state, and the number of provinces in a state plays a role in determininng where immigrants go.

The provinces in La Rioja are also closer to Europe than BA state is, in terms of number of intervening provinces between the origin province of the emigrant and their eventual settlement. Again, number of provinces between home and destination once the game engine calculates which nation the emigrant will go to also plays a role (something that also explains California and Alaska getting tons of settlers, since the provinces are Asia are bigger and fewer than in Western and Central Europe, migrants especiall from East Europe tend to settle Cali and Alaska instead of the East Coast of the USA).

Getting OT but are these immigration/province numbers between home and destination considered in any way when reorganising the provinces in Clio?

I'm working on it for number of provinces per state, so historic centers of colonization are in states with more provinces, but there are some things that with the old engine will be difficult even with the new map (number of separating provinces is very hard to account for)

Yes, I knew about the state sizes being accounted. I just wondered if also that province "distance" is being taken into account now that it was mentioned. Unfortunately I think you are right and it would be very hard to consider also that in redrawing the province borders.
