No doubt by the end of this AAR some people might want him to attack Germany, allthough they probably won't last that long.

Banzai!

Japan 44 is a fun scenario. I remember having an AAR of it a long time ago, with HOI2 1.2 (pre-DD). Back then conquering China was easy, the US didn't even pose a threat, and Zombie Yamamoto led my carrier fleet.

I imagine you will have rather a harder time than I did. Looking forward to the AAR!

Welcome to my second AAR. My first attempt was a somewhat small offering, and I will attempt to ensure that this one continues for considerably longer.
Your first AAR was short...this one will be considerably longer  ...well I wouldn't miss this anyways, I'm in. Glad to catch this one from the start.

Good luck.

Good luck.

His goal this time is 50k to 100k replies. :D
We need to all keep commenting and saying great job so we can reach it. So, as my first comment in this AAR, I say good luck as you will definately need it. :)

Mmm, two pages of comments without an actual update... impressive to say the least... :D

YAY! Let's get ready to Remble!

A Japan 1944 AAR ... I don't know whether anyone has ever tried this before. Best of luck to you. I'm sure you'll need it. :D

@Moderators: Could anyone please correct the title of this thread to " The Setting Sun - Gotterdammerung, Japan 1944."? There's a typo. Thanks.

So many replies so soon  Thank you all for your interest. Welcome back to the familiar faces of my previous AAR. Some answers are required it seems before I update.

Herbert West - China is certainly a target.

Mangudai - Thank you. The United States forces in general are likely to be a small problem.

Kurt_Steiner, Kanil, TeutonburgerW, stnylan, Maldorians, ColossusCrusher, Archer, Brad1, elbasto, Inner Circle, Connavar - Welcome and thank you.

GeneralHannibal - No Military Control of Germany and I do not accept peace deals. Whether I can still live we shall see.

Manziel - Thats a lot of posts. I am not sure this AAR will attract the same amount of interest as the last. Time will tell :)

Onni_Manni - Welcome. Initial goals will be covered in the reports, telling ahead would spoil it somewhat :D

rcduggan - Thank you. There has been at least one other '44 Japan AAR which I read before I started this.

Admiral Yamamot - Japan is a country I have played very little in any scenario, which is one of the reasons I chose it. It has a position of relative safety but has some very large problems to deal with.

dublish - I will do my best to keep you interested as long as I can. Germany is on its own and at the mercy of the AI. It is therefore doomed.

Nathan Madien, trekaddict - The good thing about Japan is that I won't have any friendly Nations to turn on. They will all be long gone before I could reach them.

Phoenix Dace - Welcome and thank you. I read your AAR as a prelude to starting this. It gave me a few ideas that I was not considering.

Mob_Freako - I might not even survive let alone conquer Europe.

sbr - Welcome. Catching it at the start means you get to wait for updates, not always a good thing :D

Panzer6 - Thank you and welcome. 50k+ replies? That is one huge amount of posts  You would probably be looking at somewhere above 1,000,000 views for that many replies. Those numbers are kind of scary.

Murmurandus - Surprising amount of replies so quickly. Now I have to try and ensure I don't bore you all to death :)

Sokraates - Thank you. It has been tried before as already mentioned. Of all the places to make a typo I do it in the title. Whilst I could and did change the first post I will indeed need to find a friendly mod to change the post title.

Burgundy - Welcome. I think the general number I get from reading other posts is roughly 3 - 6 months after Germany falls. Stopping the Russian hordes is not going to be very much easy. Fortunately they don't have a Navy.

Update to follow ...

Initial Reports

Diplomacy and Intelligence

0000 June 20th 1944.
Imperial Palace. Tokyo, Japan.

"Welcome to this meeting of the Cabinet Gentlemen. His Imperial Majesty has asked me to chair this and subsequent meetings." Prime Minister Hideki opened the meeting. "We are all aware of the peril our Country is in, but we shall see exactly how bad it is and what we can do to alter the present course. We will begin with a Diplomatic overview."

"Thank you Prime Minister. The current Diplomatic situation is not in our favour with a large part of the World at War with Japan." began Shigemitsu Mamoru the Foreign Minister.

jun20440000dip2.jpg

"Of the sixty one independant Nations in the World, we are at War with thirty one of them. Even Germany has less enemies than we do at this time, although they have one foe that we do not, the Soviet Union. I see no reason for the Soviets to attack us as they are far to busy with Germany. The Manchurian border is lightly guarded with no sign of any military build up

Our main enemies are Nationalist China and its puppets, the United Kingdom and the United States. The majority of our enemies are amongst the Allies led by the United Kingdom. They are engaged in a major ground war in Europe with Germany and its Axis partners and some of their forces are not available for use in the Pacific."

jun20440000dip3.jpg

"We have a total of nine friendly Countries within the Axis, of which Germany is the leader. Our European allies are in some considerable trouble, with their forces severly weakened from years of war. How long they can last and keep our enemies at bay is not known, but it is reasonable to assume that they will not last until the end of the year. This will leave us and our puppet states alone against the might of the Allies and possibly the Soviet Union if it decides to turn against us.

Japan lacks several key resources that are required to run its industry at peak capacity. With no means to harness these resources ourselves we must either trade for them or acquire them by military force. My attention will be focused on trading with as many Nations as possible for the materials we lack, most notably energy and oil. South America is the only region with which we can reliably trade and even here a large part of any trade is likely to be sunk as it is shipped across the Pacific by the United States Navy.

I will be able to obtain detailed plans of technology that we do not possess from our allies. This may be costly initially but I have high hopes that, in the interests of all Axis partners, most of these plans will be handed to us for free. This should assist us greatly in trying to close the technology gap with the Allies in particular. That is all from me for the moment." concluded Mamoru.

"Thank you Foreign Minister. Intelligence next please."

"Your Majesty, Gentlemen." Koiso Kuniaki the Head of Intelligence began. "We have several agents within our enemies ranks that are providing what information they can obtain. Some of the information is fairly accurate but a large part of it is not. I will be attempting to increase our overseas agents over time to attempt to make these reports more accurate. Funding may be a problem but I will do what I can with what is available."

jun20440000intnatch.jpg

"Our main land enemy at this time is Nationlist China and its various puppet states. Current intelligence reports give them somewhere close to eighty land divisions facing our forces in China. Adding their puppets and Communist Chinese forces brings this number up to slightly over one hundred divisions. A large part of these forces is obsolete and should present little trouble initially. Their current research is spread across various specialisations with no real main focus. Most of their research is into technology that we do not currently possess. They have no Airforce or Navy to speak of so we are in a pure land fight as far as they are concerned."

jun20440000intuk.jpg

"The United Kingdom is a bigger problem for us. Their Army is not large but it is extremely modern with a heavy focus on mobile forces. Some part of this army is in Europe but a significant part is in India facing our forces in Burma. We do not have enough forces to hold them in this area.

The Royal Navy is slightly larger than the Imperial Japanese Navy with more Aircraft Carriers than we currently possess. The vast majority of their fleet is in home waters and should not trouble us in any way for some time.

The Royal Airforce is large and the numbers shown are not accurate. Fortunately their aircraft are very busy with Germany for the moment and we are unlikely to see many of their forces in the Pacific or Burma."

jun20440000intus.jpg

"By far as our largest concern is the United States. They have a huge industrial base with which to manufacture the instruments of war.

Their current Army size is fairly large with a focus on mobile warfare similar to the British. Most of their mobile forces are in France and are not likely to be seen in our areas of operations. They do have a moderate size force available to them in the Pacific and this force outnumbers our current forces in the same area. Most of our forces are in China.

The United States Navy is roughly three time the size of the Imperial Japanese Navy and is more modern. I would suggest that we do not try and attack this force directly until it has been reduced in some way. Their Aircraft Carriers also have more modern aircraft and they are researching even more modern variants, which is something we shall also have to concentrate on.

The United States Airforce is also large but, like the British, is mostly engaged in Europe against our allies."

jun20440000intjap.jpg

"We have a few enemy spies within our ranks and I will be taking steps to remove them in due course.

Our current research is heavily involved with industry in an attempt to harness our own resources to greater effect. We are also conducting research into improved land and sea doctrines to try and increase the performance of our Armed Forces. The only area where we are on a par with our Allied enemies is with air doctrine, we are behind in almost every other aspect and need to close this gap as quickly as possible. Nothing further." Kuniaki concluded.

While I have confidence that such a moment will come even in this AAR, I'm also sure that it will take much longer. And we might even see a real Japanese WC, since Germany of 1944 shouldn't exist any more by that time.

Go, Japan! Go, Remble!
