I've had 2 access violations and some new ones I haven't seen in the thread:

The first one was after using the F12 gold cheat, and all of them come after about an hour of play.

After the last one, when I reloaded the game I had a thought, bugs are usually in the new stuff and the way the game automatically chooses the last realm you played as is new, so I selected a different one, then manually chose my realm again and started the game. I played through about 15-20 years without a crash. Before that the fatal errors had been happening steadily every 5 years or so. This could be just coincidence but maybe if more of us try the same it might point Paradox in the direction of the bug. I'll also try reloading and not manually selecting my realm next time to see if the error happens again.

Great, now I'm getting the fatal error as well in my Kingdom of Aragon 1066 game. All the save files are corrupt for whatever reason, so the game is now lost.

When I started from 1187 as the Duchy of Tripoli I never saw the fatal error in over 100 years. Crashed twice, but I always able to reload. With the Aragon game, I crashed about 5 times in 10 years and now I can't reload any previos save.

Here is my log, the game freezes and I get an error popup, seems random, and never in a ledger, just normal map view:

Note: It is to the point the game is unplayable, I can play for about a half hour and then it crashes. Unless this gets fixed, I think I want my money back Paradox.

I have a bug which is reproducible some of the time. I suspect a memory leak as well because DV is using a ridiculous amount of memory.

My bug is identical to many of the previous ones - it's an access violation at 0x0044BC53. I can reproduce it by using the 'gold' code in the console, but this only happens about 33% of the time. The likelihood increases with time spent in the game.

Apparently the bugs are hard to track down from just those exception errors unless it also refers to a specific line of code. The best way to report these crashes is if you are able to consistently crash a game at a certain point, to compress and e-mail the saved game with specific steps on how to reproduce the crash to support@paradoxplaza.com.

I think this is worth mentioning again, because if we keep sending in our unstable saved games until they tell us to stop doing it we should get a stable patch in no time at all.

Remember to make sure you can reliably reproduce the crash before you send it in. It is in our best interest to make the most efficient use of their time.

Darn, started to get fatal errors as well now.

I don't see why they would need my save-game. Just start a game, any game, and it will start crashing for you soon enough. I'm playing as England, 1066 campaign, with Windows XP, 1gig of RAM, 3.0gig processor, I'm up to the year 1086, and the game just crashes every half-hour to an hour at random.

But, here is my save-game, I posted it to filefront rather than emailing:
http://files.filefront.com/save+gamesrar/;8814039;/fileinfo.html

Well I keep getting the 0x0044BC53 error too.

Telling -- if you Google that, the only place in the universe that this error code shows up is in the Paradox forums for this game.

This is the second game I gotten into, only to hit the fatal error roadblock. Can't get around them -- they reproduce like clockwork on the same date.

For me, the game is now unplayable in its current state.

Wake me up when the patch comes out. This is such a great game, I think I will need the sleep in advance, cause once it is working I suspect sleep will be in short supply.

Regards,
Feltan

I have just read the whole thread, and I am asking myself if, in its chaos of error-message lines of code, there are dominant patterns emerging.

In less abstract terms, I am wondering if some of you have detected recurrent conditions (patterns) which increase the probability of causing a fatal-error crash.

In even more practical terms, I wonder if it would be possible to create a list of player behaviours which might minimize the possibility of provoking the crashes (maybe not all of them, but some of the most recurrent).

I have not played DV yet, and it would be useful if I could be told what not to do.

Don't play it until the patch comes out. DV came out on a Friday and I had stopped playing it by Saturday afternoon. 3 games started, 3 games ended with repeatable crashes on the same date within the first 50 years.

Based on my experience and reading the forums, the problem is going to be more hardware configuration dependent than player dependent. That is, if you start getting them, you'll probably always get them, and if you don't, you won't.

The two fatal errors I have experienced were triggered by 1) double-clicking a character from the bride finder and 2) single-clicking a character in my court. The latter action, single-clicking a character in my court, used to cause me a lot of crashes in CK.

Now, one thing I will say is that I do all of my actions (building, positioning, declaring war, giving orders) while paused, so I would never click on a character or similar while the game is running (and then I run extremely fast).

My conjecture is that under some conditions memory will not be allocated in time, and that as a result a null pointer will be dereferenced and everything goes to hell.

But aside from the usual (defrag, buy more memory) suggestions, there's not a lot I could suggest.

The fatal error occurs at random. I haven't had the error occur in the ledger or court panels. The error always occurs in the normal map view. I don't think I'm clicking in any particular way at all. Usually I'm just watching an army move or waiting for a build item to complete, or maybe clicking on province names to check their status, when WHAM it crashes for no reason. It doesn't seem to crash in or around military action sometimes, but, then again, I'm always involved in military actions of some sort.

As for my hardware, I have a Dell Dimension 4700, with 3.0 gigs of processing power, 1.5 gigs of RAM, a Soundblaster Live sound card, and an ATI X1600pro 512 video card. I defrag my PC regularily, currently I have less than 5% fragmentation. I play other PC games daily, currently I'm playing Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms and my wife is playing TheSims2, neither game has ever crashed on me. So, it's not that my PC is inferior.

I wonder if maybe it is a software conflict? Maybe my virus software? I have Norton AV. Aside from that, I don't have any other background tasks running.

Whatever it is, I hope it gets fixed.

Nonononono, totally wrong approach. I'd rather see people finding ways to maximise the possibility of provoking the crashes and posting here the results. :)

That way Paradox need to spend less time finding crashes, can fix the crashes faster and focus more on tweaking gameplay instead.

I can't remember anything specific that I was doing at the time though I think the first one may have happened when i unpaused the game after ploughing through my ruler's ancestry.

Don't know if it can help but IIRC all FE I've had were :
- in games saved on deus vult (no crash before my first save/reload)
- after my first lord was dead
- once my second or third lord had childs

Often my games start to crash when I'm opening the page 2 of the characters chapter of the ledger.

If I continue the game without using the ledger, I can play 20-30 more years without too many fatal errors, then FE start to crash the game more and more often (not exactly on the same date). At this stage the errors seem to happen more often when I send a fosterling or a marriage offer, but they may also crash the game when I do nothing.

1. Yes, you would be totally right ... if I had the time to beta-test DV. Like many Paradox customers, I have a job, a family, books to read, other games to play (those that rarely crash, of course). Beta-testing DV and helping out Paradox for free are rather low on my list of priorities, even though I do respect Paradox (and this forum) a lot.

2. Speaking of priorities, I doubt that fixing DV is high on Paradox's own list of priorities : its programmers also have a main job (Europa Universalis IV ?), a family, books to read, and other sources of leisure.

It's not a big deal : DV did not cost a lot, it can be uninstalled to reinstall and patch the original CK, and there are other interesting Paradox games to play. I'm not complaining in the least.

PS > I thank those of you who took the time and trouble to answer my previous post (# 53) concerning ways to attempt to avoid the fatal-error crashes. If I do play a little DV, I will try out your suggestions : but I am waiting for Amazon to mail me the Heroes of Might and Magic 5 / Tribes of the East expansion, so I doubt that I will be beta-testing  DV anytime soon.
