Fractured Body, Lost Soul
Gustav woke from nightmare. He had terrible dream where he had been imprisoned and chained. He felt that his arms where almost numb, but in extreme pain and his head ached. He tried to open his eyes, but unbelievable bright light hit them. In his dream he had been in small cell where was no light anymore. He felt that someone was putting something wet on his hand that took little off the pain. After feeling that little relief he noticed that his hole body was on fire and he was wet like he had just been swimming.
After awhile he tries to again open his eye’s with little better success and he see golden angel in bright light leaning toward him and putting something in his arms. He started to speak, but could not get words from his dry mouth. The angel says to him “Did I wake you? We all feared that you would never woke again.” With relief filling her voice.
Gustav tries to speak again, but without success same time as beautiful female moves out from bed and returns soon with glass on his hand. She gives him little something wet on his mouth, but as Gustav tries to drink more he starts to cough and female says “Not so fast. You have been badly dehydrated and you should not take much water at once.”
Gustav tries to nod, but passes back to unconsciousness.
He wakes up again. His head still hurt and body felt like it was covered with flames. After opening of his eyes he notices that room is dark. He turns his face to see that angel, but she is not present. He tries to lift his arm, but can’t. He tries to move his legs, but can’t. He tries to scream, but get only quiet voice from his mouth. He tries to listen and there is silent conversation coming from somewhere near. There is female and male talking.
“Must you leave already, you just came” Female says with accusing tone.
“Sorry my love, but now that he has been rescued there is much job to do. I have to leave at dawn.” Male answers.
There is small moment of silence before female continues “I still haven’t forgive you that you had lied to me our whole lifetime together.”
“I’m sorry, but that was what my work needed. I didn’t like it, but I had to do it.” That was male voice.
“I love you, my dear mister liar.” She said with playful tone.
“I love you too.” Male answered and then there was long silence.
Suddenly door to room opens and there dim light coming from corridor and even that hurts his eyes, but he can see the angel again on doorway. Gustav says with silent voice “Who are you? Am I in heaven or in hell?”
Woman said with delightful voice “You are awake! Don’t try to speak yet. You are too weak.”
Woman closes the door and he can only see her figure in low light. She walk toward the bed and sits next to him. She starts gently caress his hair and says “Sleep now dear Gustav. You need lot’s of rest.”
Gustav asks with weak voice “Can you stay with me?”
“Of course I can.” She answers and lies next to him moving her gentle hand all over Gustav’s head. He falls back to sleep almost instantly. And then comes the nightmares.
Sun had not yet been risen, but Karl Kilbom and Axel Pettersson where removing bushes that where covering their Volvo. Both of the wear regular peasant clothing with blue trousers, brown jackets and used shoes. There was large closed brown backpack on ground next to them. Suddenly familiar voice alerted them both as Erik Palmstierna yelled “Gunnar wants me to came with you.”
Both men’s stared shaking figure that was approaching. He looked like he had not got his morning drink today. Erik was wearing black leather jacket and blue pants. “hell of time to get up.” Erik said.
“yes it is, but we have long ride to linksböle and back ahead.” Karl answered.
“Linksböle, isn’t that little town in Norrköping?” Erik asked. God he felt that he would need a drink and touched his back pocket where his hidden bottle was.
“Yes it is, we have to go there and meet one leader of local partisans.” Karl answered and spitted. Partisan, when on hell have they came rebels? They were rightful Swedish leaders of communist party, he thought.
After awhile car was removed under bushes and all three men went inside. Pettersson was driving, Karl sitted next to him and Erik was lying on back seat and holding his breath, so he would no vomit into car.
Sound of cars engine woke Gustav. He was completely wet after dreamland that was full of nightmares. His angel had left the room and he was still wondering who she was and where he was as door opened. Light from corridor didn’t hurt anymore so much his eyes. She entered with her golden hair pushing wheelchair in front of her. She smiled to him like angel as she noticed that he was awake.
With weak voice Gustav asked “Where am I? How did I get here?”
She answered still smiling same time “You are at communist safe house. Hermansson got you here.”
Gustav tried to rise to sitting position, but was too weak for that. Then he asked “Where is Hermansson?”
“Out there somewhere. He patrolling forest and fields around us with commandos to keep place more secure.” She answered and moved to sit next to Gustav and helped him to sit. Now Gustav could see there room he was in dim morning light that was coming from window between two dark coloured curtains. There was little night table next to him where was glass full of some liquid, possible water. Other vice there was only one chair on another side of bed and Swedish flag on wall, there was something strange in flag, but it was too dark to see what.
“Do you want to try to get in chair? I could push you.” Woman asked and Gustav only nods to answer. It takes quite of time before he’s sitting in wheelchair. Gustav finds pain in so many places that he had never before noticed.
When his finally sitting on chair she tells female “Take me to that flag.”
As they approach Gustav sees the differences in Flag and there is some writing under it. Finally when he is next to flag he can read it.
One bold to slay our enemies from above
One bolt to kill our enemies from below
And only one bloody tear to drop for our fallen comrades
We are the true Sweden and there is no mercy anymore
Fear us or die eternally
“It’s quite naïve and little too macho for my taste, but I like the flag.” Gustav said
“Thanks, I made it myself.” Says familiar voice behind him.
As she turns his chair Gustav sees smiling face of Gunnar Johansson. His brown hair is nicely combed and green eyes look like they where also smiling. Other vice he isn’t big man or even strong. His strength lies in his sharp and quick brains.
“I thought that I would never ever again see you.” Gustav says and tries to smile back, but even his face hurts too much for that.
“I feared worst too, when Hermansson brought you here week ago.” Gunner said back with joyful voice.
Gustav felt relief in his heart same time as he felt his strength was leaving his body and said with weak tone “I need more rest now.”
She and Gunnar quickly helped Gustav back to bed and he was almost instantly sleeping.
After many hours of driving Axel, Karl and Erik where near Linksböle. They left their car half kilometre from town. Hiding it to forest. Every one checked their revolvers and Axel and Karl started to walk toward town and Erik was left to guard the car in case that there would be some uninvited visitors. Erik didn’t have anything against that, because his hidden whiskey bottle.
It was not big town, only few thousand lived there and it was surrounded with lots of forest and farmhouses. When they entered the main street called Links-street. There they could see old yellow painted barbershop, few living houses and big brown building with text “Links Bar” where they could hear lots of noises even when time was only two at daytime.
They ventured deeper into town and passed local small police station. It was stone building and three polices where standing outside. It seemed odd to them that one of the polices was also armed with baseball bat. They greeted polices happily, but get no other response back, except evil stare.
Little more walking and they finally where they wanted. In front of old wooden general store that was painted in red. There was text outside it saying “Eriksson”. When they stopped Karl said “Here we are.” It had took them around one hour to get there.
Axel moved to open old wooden door with one big window in top of it. There was counter in and many shelves in shop room. Behind the counter there was muscular man, probably fifty years old with muscular body. He got long black hair and short beard. Karl looked salesman with questioning face. Man nods after while and says “We are alone if you are asking it, Karl. You should surely start to open your mouth little more.”
Axel looks both man in turns few times before Karl says “May I introduce you Per Eriksson, old hag from my past. He was one of the best sailors and fisherman, before he started to do serious business.”
Per laughs out loud and says “Serious business, sure. One little shop in middle of nowhere, but you still look like owl old fellow with those horrible glasses.”
“Well I have to see even something, but let’s get to serious business. Is everything ready?” Karl asked.
Per takes also more serious look and nods. “We should be ready to strike at September. How’s Gustav?” he then asks back.
Axel answers before Karl “He’s seriously hurt, but alive when we left. I heard from my wife that he had regained his concussions.”
Per nods again and says “That’s good news, this country needs him. You should go now, before someone wonders what you are doing here.” Then he lifts few breads behind counter and gives them to Axel and Karl and continues “Someone could also keep it strange if you don’t buy anything.”
Axel looked at Per and asked “Are things so bad?”
Smiling sadly back Per answered “Probably even worst. Pehrsson’s police is doing everyone’s life miserable.”
Then Karl and Axel shake Per’s hand said their farewells and left the shop. When they arrived back to street axel asked from Karl “What was that? What is ready?”
Karl was long time silent before he answered “Maybe I can tell you. There is hidden fleet in Luleå. Gustav saved six ships from destruction for possible later use. There is three battlecruisers and three screening vessels hidden and Per and his old friends from fishing times are going to get them with vice admiral Lindström.”
“that is a great news. They can be used to fight against Pehrsson. Why..” Axel’s sentence where cut with sound of gun fire coming from direction they had entered town. Both men started to fastly walk there to see what was going on.
After few corners and walking five hundred meters with fast pace they could see three policemans standing next to someone who was lying on ground. Karl could only see figures of polices and recognise them by uniform. He see one of them kicking someones head and another with baseball bat hitting on his knees. Last one was laughing out loud and yelling “Do you feel the new law, commie lover.”
Axel could see much better. He could not recognise who the victim was from his bloody mess that was once called face, but he did recognise the black leather jacket and blue pants. Without thinking he yells “It’s Erik!” and pull his revolver aiming police who was kicking Erik on head. He squeezes the trigger and sees police to get hit on torso fall down. Same time he feels that something just died inside him. He’s stunned in understanding that he had just killed a living man. His first. Then he feels pain in his arm as another polices bullet pierces it. He falls down in pain and hears sound of fire fight that only last few moments. Then there is big wailing as alarm bells start to sound.
“Get up you! We don’t have time to waste.” Karl orders him and as Axel opens his eyes seeing that all three polices are dead. He runs to Erik.
“No more. No more.” Is silent plea coming from Eriks mouth as Axel lowers down to examine wounds of Erik.
He then looks up to Karl and says “his both kneecaps has been shattered. We got to get him with us. They make them to talk if we leave him here.”
Karl just shakes his head and says “We don’t have time to carry him.”
“They torture him so long that he speaks like a little bird other vice” Axel argued.
“No they won’t” Karl replied and Axel closed his eyes as he see revolver rising. He hears loud banng and his soul hurts even more.
“No let’s go. Let’s hope that our car is where it should be!” Karl yelled to him and pulled him to run with him.
Luckily their car was there and same time as they where driving back Gustav had get him self in Wheelchair after one hour of trying and was watching out of his room window. In evening light he could see his angel stretching outside near fence.
