HKslan: I figured that it was time to bring Riegler into the fold. It is Christmas after all. :D Sadly, you are correct. The First Panzer Division has suffered 80% casualties by this point. I have pulled them off the line for fear that the division would not survive any more fighting.
Good lord. I sure hope--after France of course--you'll wait 'til summer for anymore offensive action, except in Denmark and Norway. Hopefully in England, and maybe Spain as well. :D

[edit] Congratulations on your 700 replies BTW.

Thanks Hardraade and that is something I do try to emphasis myself when it is Christmas time. Still, although we don't have Thanksgiving here in the UK, isn't it similar to some kind of "mini-Christmas" if you like? Spending it with family and friends around a giant turkey?

Anyway, aside from that, keep up with the updates! Just one question I did have, though. Are you emphasising for world conquest or will you stop when it gets to a realistic stage? Just something I did wonder. I know in TRP, you can easily lose as Germany but in vanilla, it's easy to go on a world conquering spree.

Nice update.....and a long one too! I'm proud of the kid for finally flinging a little crap back at his tormentor........and I laughed my ass off too!!

Alas, tomorrow it Thanksgiving and I am stuck working swing shift so I miss all the delicious turkey and fixins. You would think after 25 years on patrol I could get the day off? Nah.....besides......driving around in a car is not nearly as dangerous as our Troops in Iraq or Afganistan, or what the different armies surrered in WW1 or WW2 or Korea or Vietnam.....

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

HKslan: At this point I do not plan to launch any offensive actions until at least the spring. Unfortunately, First Panzer is not the only unit that has been severely mauled. It's good to get to 700. I hope I can hold everyone's interest long enough to get to 1,000.

Ksim3000: The two holidays are indeed very similar in that regard. The only big difference is that one is religious and the other is both secular and more of an American thing. As to my goals- I certainly am not looking to conquer the whole world and am trying to keep it realistic. I will, however, bring the war to my enemies wherever they are. It may be that it's easy to win the war in vanilla, but as I'm sure HKslan would be happy to point out, I did lose in Spain.

KLorberau: Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I can't believe you couldn't get a day off with that kind of time on the job. When I got to work today it was new guy central.

Pfft, like I'm the only one.

Yes, that is indeed true about Thanksgiving. Still, I am sure it is a nice holiday. I wish we celebrated something like that over here.

Also, have you ever tried out the "Total Realism Project", also known as the "TRP" mod? That is supposed to simulate realism quite alot and even has the very possibility of Germany losing despite playing in the 1936 scenario.

I believe the Allies D-Day and Germany can lose on the Eastern Front alot easier. So, it has it's possibilities.

But still, yes, you did lose in Spain. Will you lose a second time, though?

I learned when 1.3a was fresh you couldn't count on the new AI as far as amphibious assaults were concerned. I got my D-Day in what was French coast closer to Belgium the spring of '43 in one of my games, about 25 American divisions worth. And then another in the same game 2 years later in Greece. They managed to pile 80 divisions in that beachhead, and I was still fighting the Soviets. Thought I was ruined for sure but I cut them in half when they got enough troops in Bulgaria for them to switch sides almost. And this was N/N.

Was this with the original, though? I am quite impressed though regardless. However, I was referring to the TRP mod, which apparently improves the chances of a successful D-Day and defeat on the Eastern Front.

Ksim3000: What makes Thanksgiving so special to me is that you get the same closeness with family as at Christmas, but without the stress and commercialism. There are several mods that I am interested in trying out once I'm through playing this game, and TRP is high on the list. I am hesitant to install any mods as I don't know if they'll interfere with my saved games(I don't really know that much about computers when you come right down to it). I state now that I will avenge my earlier defeat in Spain. I will take great pleasure in proving that the outcome of the first war was a fluke.

HKslan: Hopefully I won't soon face any such large scale invasions.

Just Doomsday, yeah. And SMEP, which I always play with, but it doesn't modify the AI files. I forgot to mention they invaded Italy around the exact same time they actually did. I was completely concentrated on the East, and didn't notice until I got their switching sides event.

Hopefully, yeah. It just taught me the valuable lesson of not ignoring the southern European coasts. Although every time it was the Americans--if you don't get them at war with you then I don't think you have anything to worry about landing wise.

Dec. 26, 1939
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

"Hello Max, mind if I join you?"

Max looked up at his visitor and nodded, "Of course, Sophie. Have a seat."

After settling herself onto the bench next to him, Sophie smiled and asked, "What brings you out here all by yourself?"

"Just grabbing some peace and quiet. I went to a party last night and my head is pounding. You?"

"Sneaking out for a cigarette."

Max frowned and asked, "What do you mean sneaking?"

Sophie lit her cigarette and drew on it deeply before replying, "Helmut feels that smoking is not proper for women."

Max laughed, "You're kidding?" When she assured him that she was not he shook his head in wonderment and said, "You know, Helmut is always saying how uptight his brother is. I can't imagine how he is if that's Helmut talking."

Sophie shrugged, "Otto? I don't think he's all that uptight. At least, not any more than any other career officer you come across."

Gesturing toward her cigarette, Max asked, "And how long do you expect to keep that a secret?"

She smiled, "He hasn't noticed yet, and we've been seeing each other for over a year and a half now. Pretty surprising when you consider he used to be in the intelligence business."

Max chuckled and said, "Well, you can count on me to keep the secret."

"Thanks, Max." Turning to him questioningly she asked, "Max, if you don't mind me asking, why didn't you go home to Germany to recuperate close to your family? Why stay here in Amsterdam?"

Max sighed and looked away for a moment before replying, "I didn't have anyone to go home to. My parents died when I was young and I was raised by my grandmother. She died a few years ago."

"Oh Max, I'm so sorry."

Max shrugged, "No reason to be. Besides, I wanted to stay close to Helmut. He was in a real bad way and I figured he could use the company. Not to mention the fact that he shouldn't be allowed to wander around without supervision."

Sophie smiled, "You care about him quite a bit, don't you?"

Max shifted in his seat, and Sophie got the impression that she had made him uncomfortable. She was about to change the subject when he finally replied, "We've been through a lot, you know? Been through some very touch and go situations. He's saved my life more than once and I've returned the favor a few times myself."

Sophie nodded, "I'm sure that being in combat with someone forms a special bond."

Max shook his head, "It's more than that. Helmut's a... I grew up without anyone and...Oh, I don't know how to put it."

Sophie put her hand on his shoulder and said, "It's alright, Max. I understand."

He nodded, grateful that she had freed him from having to say any more. Looking over to her he said, "I'm glad he found you, Sophie. You're good for him."

"Thanks."

"I mean it. Helmut needs someone like you. Any chance that you two will get married sometime soon?"

Sophie frowned, "He's never mentioned it. I've tired to bring it up a couple of times, but the subject always gets changed. I'm starting to wonder if he's doing it intentionally, or if he just doesn't get it."

Max smiled, "He can be remarkably obtuse at times, can't he?"

"That Max, is an understatement.", she replied.

As they shared a laugh, the subject of their conversation approached them and asked, "You ready to head down to the train station, Sophie?"

Sophie stood and kissed him on the cheek saying, "Just let me freshen up a bit and we can head right over."

Helmut frowned, "Don't take too long. You don't want to miss the train."

"We have plenty of time, don't worry."

As she walked away, Helmut sat down next to Max and said, "God, I wish she'd stop smoking those damn things."

"What things?", asked Max in surprise.

"Cigarettes of course. I don't know why she thinks I don't know. The smell is a dead giveaway. I keep bringing up the fact that I feel that women shouldn't be smoking, but she doesn't take the hint." Noticing that Max was laughing, he turned to him and asked, "What are you laughing about?"

"Seems to me that neither of you are really all that good at taking hints.", replied Max.

"What do you mean by that?"

Max smiled, "Nothing."

Finally got a chance to catch up on this AAR. I must say each post is better than the next. Can't wait to see where you take the characters next.

Oh, and don't lose to Spain again. Don't think I could take the strain of another stint in a POW camp for Otto

I don't think my pride could take it either. Thanks for reading.

Showing the emotions and feelings of characters in a war zone is good. I like it, too, it is realistic and nothing like anything out of a Harry Turtledove novel.

This story shares some similarities with the War in the Pacific AAR on Matrix Forums, written by a member called "Cuttlefish". It's called the "Voyages of the Hibiki" I think.

Cuttlefish, like yourself, has written not just about war but also about the characters and how it is affecting their own personal lives.

Just something I thought I would point out as I have noticed the similarities and enjoy following along to both stories.

Another good one Hardraade....Are they heading back to Deutschland to visit the kids? Maybe going to elope and tie the knot?? Guess we will have to be patient......

Ksim3000: Glad that you're still enjoying the story. I'm not familiar with the Matrix Forums, would that be similar to Paradox but with a different game?

KLorberau: Patience is a virtue after all. :D Speaking of which, the next update probably won't post until the middle of next week. Basically, I've been working a lot of double shifts and just haven't had the time. The one day I didn't have to work a double I spent my free time seeing England's greatest export of the last fifty years live and in concert. Naturally I speak of Jethro Tull.
