30th April 1625
Calais, France

As the large group of riders and the two wagons approached the city Jean felt relived. Nothing had happened since they had left their wounded with the Baron in the small village, continuing they had been riding together with the Duke’s 30 English riders all dressed in French colours. The travel had been uneventful, the sun had been shining and had it not been for the fact that Jean had been nervous at every turn it would have been a nice ride. Instead it had been a trip filled with Jean being nervous, but now that he could see the city walls of Calais in front of him he was relived. They had arrived in Calais and soon the Duke and the Queen would leave to England. Although Jean liked the Duke and thought him to be a great politician and leader he would be glad to see him leave, not because of who the Duke was, but because of the danger he was to everyone. One could never know when something would happen, so Jean would be glad when this responsibly was lifted from his chest.

As they entered Calais through the main gate it was midday and the city was filled with people, but the large escort and the two large wagons soon got the people out of the way. It was not like anyone would stay in the middle of the road when they had close to 40 riders coming right against them.

“Francois, we are approaching the harbour… Have you found the harbour captain’s offices yet?”

”I am afraid I haven’t been able to find it yet monsieur Jean. But I will see to it at once!”

“Good, there is no point in delaying it. Get the harbour captain here as soon as possible while we see to Her Majesty’s luggage is transported to His Grace’s ship!”

As Francois rode off to find the harbour captain Jean watched as the riders and the wagons came to halt. The Duke immediately came out of the wagon and escorted the Queen down from the wagon, there it was already a small boat waiting and the Queen was at once taken onboard and rowed across to the large English vessel.

”Well monsieur Jean this is it. I would like to thank you very much for your wonderful work. You have protected both Her Majesty’s and my life in an excellent way and I am very thankful… Remember if there is anything you need, anything at all you are always welcome in England. Ask and I will do all I can to aid…”

“I thank you Your Grace, I am very honoured and glad that Your Grace’s think I have been able to fulfil my duty!”

”Certainly… you have done superb. Oh and that reminds me… To thank the Baron, you and the entire company for your great work I have decided to give all these horses to your company. My men will return with me to England and I have no use for the horses and transporting them across the Channel is pointless… I hope you will accept 30 horses ready for battle with full equipment?”

“I most humbly accept Your Grace. Thank you very much. I am honoured and I am sure the Baron will be…”

”Good, let us hope they will serve you well… Also you see those three large white in the front Jean. Those were used by my commanders, some of the finest horses in France I am told.”

“They are wonderful animals Your Grace, and I am sure they are worth a lot. Just the saddles must be worth a lot go gold.”

”Yes… well I hope they will serve you well Jean. I understand it if you might want to sell one, being a soldier is costly and I know for a fact that just one of those horses will get you lot of money… But I would like you to keep at least two of them for yourself. They are wonderful animals and they will serve you very well I think. They are my personal gift to you!”

“What can I say Your Grace…. I am shocked and deeply honoured. Thank you very much!”

As Jean was looking at the three white stallions standing there, his new horses, he couldn’t understand it, Francois returned with the harbour captain.

”I have found him monsieur Jean. The harbour captain is prepared to sign the Duke’s passport and allow for the ship to leave!”

“Good work Francois.

Monsieur would you be so kind as to take care of the details… The duke is already late and should get the Queen back to England as soon as possible.”

”At once monsieur!”

The man signed the passport and oversaw the last luggage as it was transported to the vessel. Then the Duke prepared to got onboard the small boat, before leaving he handed each of the French soldiers a couple of gold coins each before nodding to all, smiling and leaving France behind.

Jean stood with Francois and the six other Frenchmen watching as the small boat got closer and closer to the large English ship. They could see the Duke climb into the ship being greeted by the officers and then moments later they could see the sails of the ship fold out as the ship slowly gained speed and left Calais harbour.

”Some days I dream of serving onboard a ship…”

“I don’t think that would be very smart Francois… After all what would we do about all our horses onboard a ship? No, I think we should stay onshore… and when you think off it, the sea is the territory of the English not us… Let them do what they do best and sail while we fight on land!”

”I presume you are correct monsieur… Still it is a beautiful sight!”

“Indeed, Francois, Indeed it is!”

Is it foreshadowing, I wonder? Will we actually see Jean take to ship to travel to England or some other foreign local? Still - what would he do with those new horses. A very kind gift for Jean and it appears he has a true benefactor in the Duke if he ever needs it.

coz1 Well if Jean ever goes to England, that is a question that will probably be answered in the future. As for all the horses, most of them are to the company, but three of them were given to Jean personally and them he can use for himself. Also as JP asked about, he might find some clues in them that might be useful ;)

J. Passepartout You got it pretty correct. He will find some clues on the horses, the Duke has something hidden in the saddle that Jean will find when he looks through all the equipment, something that can be used should it ever be necessary

All Well we are close to end a part of the story with the Duke leaving, but do not fear… he will return. Another update will be posted later today, but after that there will be no update for a week. Tomorrow I am leaving for Brussels on a trip with the university and I will be away for a week, so I won’t be able to write any updates for a week. But when I return the story will continue, don’t worry. For now I am just considering if I should leave you with a cliff-hanger or with a nicer ending… Well you will all see later today.

They could see the wagons come to halt at the harbour and then they saw the Duke and the Queen get out of the wagon. They could see close to 40 riders in total, all in French colours, but there was something not correct about all this. The captain halted his horse and turned around to the man in the dark cloak behind him.

“Your Eminence, those aren’t the guards we sent with them…”

”There you are almost correct De Rousselet. If you look closer you shall see that young de Nogaret is still there, but most of them are indeed not the men we sent with the Duke… Seems he didn’t like being attacked and brought his own men along for the last leg…

Have your men discovered what happened since the attackers didn’t carry off with the Duke?”

“I am afraid not Your Eminence… The only thing we know is that they got away with someone.”

”Well those idiotic Huguenots might think they have got the Duke of Buckingham, but I know better… That man down there on the harbour is the real Duke. I would recognize him anywhere!”

The Cardinal pointed his finger on the Duke while talking and then suddenly he smashed his right hand into his left.

”Bloody idiots… They are able to be a pain and infest all of western France with their disease, but they aren’t able to grab even one man with a small escort. I suppose you made sure that the escorted followed my orders?”

“Certainly Your Eminence, only 15 men as ordered. I still don’t understand where he has got the 30 others from…”

” De Rousselet … they came with him from England, he probably ordered them to escort him after the attack. This Duke is smarter and cleverer than I had though… Well he is a worthy opponent indeed, even more dangerous than I had though…”

“So are we to stop them from leaving?”

”No… the best would have been if the Huguenots could have captured the Duke, when they were unable to do so the second best thing is to get him across the Channel and away from France… He is dangerous, but it will be much easier to keep him contained in England than in France.

Remember I still have some friends in England… they should be able to take care of the Duke should he create any trouble…”

“And young de Nogaret? He sure is upcoming trouble… I am confident that he was in Bordeaux the night we attacked the Huguenot’s house.”

”Well… I have him under control, you just do your duty and allow for me to handle young de Nogaret and the Baron. If necessary they will be taken care off, not to worry!

But for now I think we can leave them alone, with the Duke gone and the war starting in a couple of weeks they will have more than enough to do, and I think they will not cause us anymore trouble…”

“I think that sounds very well Your Eminence!”

”Of course De Rousselet, of course… The Cardinal has everything under control!”

They continued watching while the men were carrying luggage to the boats and transporting it to the ship, and then when the Duke also entered the boat the Cardinal smiled. Watching as the English vessel left Calais behind the Cardinal smiled and turned around, one problem had been taken care off, now he could focus on the war.

As you all see I decided to be kind and not leave you with a cliff-hanger instead I decided to really end the part we have just gone trough. Now I am going to go and finish packing my luggage, so take care everyone. I will see you all around when I return next Monday :)

Lord E: ...”There you are almost correct De Rousselet. If you look closer you shall see that young de Nogaret is still there, but most of them are indeed not the men we sent with the Duke… Seems he didn’t like being attacked and brought his own men along for the last leg

this Cardinal is indeed dangerous and crafty ! ! traveling to Calais without even being noticed ! !

Lord E: ...Have your men discovered what happened since the attackers didn’t carry off the Duke?”...“I am afraid not Your Eminence… The only thing we know is that they got away with someone.”

hmmm... perhaps they could ask the Duke ? ? or, de Nogaret ? ? :D

Lord E: ...Remember I still have some friends in England… they should be able to take care of the Duke should he create any trouble…”

that could be big trouble ! !

Lord E: ...“And young de Nogaret? He sure is upcoming trouble… I am confident that he was in Bordeaux the night we attacked the Huguenot’s house.”

the Captain is smart ! !

Lord E: ...”…The Cardinal has everything under control!”

that sounds ominous ! !

Lord E: ...now he could focus on the war.

aye, that he can ! ! :D

magnificent updates ! !

That was nice of you to do. :D I think the cardinal is correct when he says that it's best to have the Duke out of France and back in England. But I think the cardinal is a bit over confident if he thinks he "has everything under control." ;)

I see the Cardinal is still up to all his tricks - but even he gets bested now and then as this little episode proves. Even he is human.

Indeed, Richelieu must be very happy to see the Duke no longer a threat. But I wonder if Richard might be if he can escape his captors.

Enjoy the trip! :)

Just a short update to say I have returned.

It has been a great week with lots of fun and also several interesting places visited. Like NATO HQ, European Parliament, the Commission and the European Central Bank. Several of those places were very cool and interesting. We also had a great time on the evenings, cheap bear and nice weather and a lot of partying. It was a wonderful week all in all…

But the bad news is that a long week with much to drink, a lot happening and very little sleep had left me tired and also I have caught an annoying bug giving my a flue, so I think I will need some days before I am back to normal. Also I have a paper that I have to deliver this week, so it will be a busy week ahead. Therefore I have been unable to write any updates yet, but I shall try to get one done tomorrow…

So you will all have to wait one more day...

Welcome back! Glad to see you come back in one piece. Take your time adjusting back to the ole grind. I assure you we will all be waiting patiently (well maybe not patiently... :D )

Good help is hard to find in government service! ;) :D

Hey, that trip sounds great! NATO HQ and all that. Surprised they had drunken parties there, though... All right, well, maybe not too surprised.

Great work!

J. Passepartout Well the Red Menace would have found out sooner or alter, so I guess sooner is better than later… also now that the Duke is leaving I think the Cardinal is happy

GhostWriter Thanks, it was a great trip.
The cardinal is indeed a dangerous man and he is a clever man that knows a lot of what is going on…

Storey Hehe I think that was the best way to do it. Well the cardinal might be a little overconfident, but until he meets someone that is able to turn him around and teach him not to be so overconfident I think he will stay like this…

stnylan Oh he is full of tricks, but as you say even he is human

coz1 Thanks. I guess only time will show…

Eber Thanks, although it is a little strange to be back it is nice also… Working on a new update now so I guess you can wait for one more hour…

Graymane Thanks :)

RensslaerHehe indeed it is ;)

The trip was indeed great, but I think I should say that at NATO we didn’t party there we had some people talking to us and teaching us about NATO. The parties were in the evening ;)

All As I said it was a great trip, and I am still adjusting to being back home. A little strange when you are used to having people around you everyday to be back home where it is silent, but it is getting better…

Now I am working on the next update and should have it posted soon. So I hope you all can wait for another hour or two

25th of June 1625
Paris, France

He was getting restless; walking back and forth he turned his head to look at the time every other minute. The clock was moving slowly forward and for the Cardinal every minute felt like an hour. Richelieu had already been waiting for close to an hour and now he was getting restless, how long could it take for the King to sign.

Suddenly the Cardinal turns around as he hear three distinct knocks on the doors.

”Enter…”

“Your Eminence… I return from His Majesty!”

”So how did it go? If he knows his own best I presume he signed?”

“I have the orders right here Your Eminence, His Majesty gave in and signed the orders”

”Splendid, splendid. I take it you have already sent out the orders as you were told De Rousselet?”

“Certainly Your Eminence. The army marches out tonight!”

”Wonderful.

Prepare the guard also De Rousselet, we will leave Paris in a week, then ride south and join up with the army… It is time to take care of these bastards once and for all.”

“So Your Eminence, what is the plan?”

”The plan De Rousselet is to crush the enemy, crush them once and for all!

No need to make things harder than they already are, crushing them will make sure they will never be able to rise up in rebellion again. I looked forward to see the Duke’s head on a stake in the Bastille…

Now onto the other business… what is our young friend up to?”

“It seems like he is still in the woods of Picardie Your Eminence, they still haven’t given up their hunt for the fake Buckingham.”

”Hmmm… well give them one more week, and then they shall join the army as it moves south.”

“One more week Your Eminence, why?”

”I think this fake Duke still has a role to play and I want him found, better to leave it to the people he trusts than to send out my own men… Now De Rousselet leave me alone, there is much to take care off!

I want the guard ready to march out in two days!”

“Certainly Your Eminence, certainly!”

”Oh and De Rousselet send him in when you leave and get the maps as well, I want this to be carefully planned… If we can get the city through our traitorous friend that will be much better than having to assault it!”

“Oui, Your Eminence!”

”Splendid, splendid… Time to let slip the dogs of war!”

As the captain leaves the Cardinal returns to his maps, moving slowly around the table like a predator until he suddenly leaps forward with his knife and stabs it right through the map while laughing. The Cardinal was looking forward to war.

The Cardinal is certainly a ruthless man.. any chance that our hero may fail to perform his expected role vis a vis the cardinal wishes?

Indeed - the false Duke of Buckingham is an excellent stalking horse.
