In this case, "Metropolis" comes from the ecumenical title of "Metropolitan", which comes from "Metropolitan Bishop", and is one of the highest ranks in the Orthodox Church.And how big is this "Metropolis"?

it's funny, almost every game I play France gets a foothold in scandinavia, often ending up annexing whole countries there. While I've so far never seen spain or england ever setting their foot there

That´s not so strange. France is (at least in the 1450 times) allied with Norway and so usually gets drawn into the scandinavian wars.
