    Anguille: thanks

Praise be to Allah, who promised his faithful slaves victory and to the mighty Sultan of Egypt, Aadil al-Fātimiyyūn.

My Lord, myself and my escorts have arrived safely in the land of the Maghreb and have been welcomed by the local lord.
These Berbers of the Sahara are not unlike their cousins of the coast, the Zirid, who were vassal of your father but rebelled under the rule of Ziri ibn Manad.
Unlike the Zirid, these desert berbers are a poor people of nomadic nature who trade with nubians and live in tents around the occasional oasis; their way of sustenance is feeble and they lack any organized rulership.
They follow Mohammed but still cling to their tribal ways, Allah the Mercifull forgive them and i've been invited to their mosque, a pityful building of poor construction and no beauty.
I am told they are a factious people, divided into many tribes each with it's Chief though of late one Chief has managed to unite all the tribes into a tribal council and, for the time being, effectively controls all of the desert borders. This Chief is a young berber warrior named Aalee and i'm told that he was sent by his father to learn the ways of war and commerce in the Al-Andalus.
Before I sent this messenger a officer of the Chief's court arrived with a group of armed man and asked to deliver a message of greeting to the Sultan of the Fatimids which I in turn deliver to you, My Lord.
I shall remain here, your faithfull eyes and ears, until called upon.
    Your most obedient servant,

Ahmadin ibn Moqtab, Servant of the Sultan of the Fatimids

Praise be to Allah, the Mercifull, the Glorious One, and to the mighty Sultan of Egypt, Aadil al-Fātimiyyūn.

My Lord, it has been one year since i've arrived in the Maghreb and I write to you again with many news.
    This Chief of the Berbers, Aalee, is indeed an intriguing figure. I've been invited to reside permanently in Figuig, in the western borders of the Sahara, and I must tell you that the town and the people itself seem like ants upon a carcass, so busy and frenetic are their daily actions;
As i've told you before, this land is not rich in food but minerals are abundant on the rocky outcrops and wild game roams the mountains of the Atlas and the grasslands nearer to the oasis.

Aalee has ordered the construction of many buildings and passed an edict that all tradesmen must leave their tents and come about the towns and has constructed for them houses; many new businesses are appearing in both East and West borderlands and the population is rising.

I've met his court, a shy group as you expect, composed of traders and but one leader of arms.

Winter came to this lands and the nights are as cold as the highest mountain air and as I left the mosque one morning after the morning prayers I noticed the crowds gathering and feasting; it appears Chief Aalee has been engaged to the Princess Ermina, daughter of the Calif of Cordoba, called by the people Ermina the Pearl of Al-Andaluz; this must surely mean they have made a peace treaty between them and I gather that action didn't bode well with the Zirid. Myself i'm rather annoyed they failed to invite a messenger of the Mighty Sultan to the wedding festivities...

I've heard some rumours about a gathering of Berber forces in the West but I dismiss this: they lack the will and the manpower to launch any raids, even a large military action.

I remain a faithfull servant of the Sultan,

    Ahmadin ibn Moqtab

    ---------------------------------------
    Later, the same year......
    ---------------------------------------

Praise be to Allah, the Glorious, may he bless the faithfull and the mighty Sultan of the Fatimids.

It is the will of Allah that binds man to Earth or delivers them into Paradise; in the same month that the Berber court cheered the birth of the first man child of the Chief Aalee our most benevolent ruler, Aadil al-Fātimiyyūn has left the realm of the living, surely to be now in Paradise with many servants who will surely honour him in the afterlife.

The new Sultan of the Fatimids

    The Heir of Aalee

I now present myself to the new Sultan, his Heir, the most magnificent Aahil ibn Aadil al-Fātimiyyūn, Master of Egypt and all the lands of the Fatimids.
If so pleases the Sultan I would like to continue my endeavours here in the lands of the Berbers and to report, as I did to the late Sultan, all news about this land and their rulers.

    Your most faithfull slave,
    Ahmadin ibn Moqtab

"May the blessing of Allah be upon the mighty Sultan of the Fatimids,

It is the 10th year of my stay in the land of the Berbers and this people, from the lowly peasants to the merchants to the rich noblemen, never cease to wonder me. They are a direct yet gentle people, honorable but unforgiving.

The consort of Chief Aalee has given birth to another child, another male, and the heir of Chief Aalee, Shafiq ibn Aalee al-Tamazigi is now being instructed in the arts of horse riding and diplomacy: he's father wouldn't have it in other way.

May I note upon the mighty Sultan that Aalee, not being a pious man, has instructed that his son be taught by a scholar of the law of Allah, praise his holy name, and has made sure that mosques are available to all his subjects; yes, I write subjects since the time of tribal warfare as long gone. Aalee is now a middle aged man and with age came weariness of the tribal bickerings and he effectively removed all the tribal lords, dividing the land in two provinces under his supervision.

I'm told by my sources that the Zirid, which still remain under the yoke of Cordoba, grow worried about the increasing movement of men from the coast to the hinterlands. Almost in complete secrecy the Chief has ordered his trusted Emir, Aamir, to gather a force of Berbers and train them in warfare. This army of Aamir was mainly composed of desert archers and spearman, a rag tag bunch if faced against our own forces but, provided they were well supplied, a nuisance to the neighbours of Aalee.
It was on the 6th year, as you recall, that a man from the land of the Normands, called by the name of Shahid, arrived in the Maghreb, exiled from his lands. I cannot tell the details because they are hidden from my knowledge but it seems he has fallen in the graces of Aalee and, most intriguing, has been raised to the station of Emir and given orders to raise an army in the western provinces. The already worried Zirid had another reason to be frightened: Shahid convinced Aalee to build armouries in both provinces and provide for the recruitment of Camel Riders and Desert Cavalry; dare I say milord that soon, within a year or so, even Mameluk Infantry might be recruited by Chief Aalee.

Another interesting news I had was that a Berber spy was working as a merchant in the land of Zenata: it would seem foolish to attack Zirid seeing as it is a vassal of Cordoba but Aalee is probably forgetfull and doesn't remember that Zenata has treaties with Cordoba. I fear war might be brewing and that pretty soon, no doub spurred by Shahid, i'll see armies marching either northwards or westwards.

My deepest condolences for the passing of your cousin Abu Dj'Afar, Calif of the Abbassids: may Allah forgive him for his deeds wrongly done against my Sultan.

Your servant in the land of the Maghreb,

    Ahmadin ibn Moqtab"

    The mysterious Shahid

    The capital of the Berbers

A letter of Ahmadin ibn Moqtab to Saleh ibn Ahmed Al-Moqtab

My dearest brother, the time has come for you and your family to come to Maghreb. I fear that some actions taken by me might put you and yours in danger. Liquidate all your goods in Cairo and make haste to Tunis with your family. The man delivering this letter will entrust to you enough money to pay the ship's hiring and all other expenses. Make haste and be faithfull to Allah and he shall deliver you safely.

    Your esteemed brother, Ahmadin.

A letter from Hassan al-Zayyāniyyūn, Emir of Marrakesh, to King Abzari al-Zayyāniyyūn of Zenata

Master of the Zenata, King by grace of Allah, Abzari Zayyāniyyūn, my father,

I have failed to protect Marrakesh. Your spies were right and I was a fool to doubt them. Now that me and my guards have fleed from the town like whipped dogs and have found refuge in the mountains I can fully understand how this whole bloody business was planned.

The two berber generals, Aamir and Shahid, left the Western Sahara along the old merchant route that we have left unguarded. They travelled during the night and remained hidden during the day and even so only took two weeks to cross the borderlands into the plateau.

    Berber army crossing the desert

They spared no time to pillage or plunder, they fell down upon the city like vultures over a corpse: quick and dirty. My forces, just two regiments of spearmen and one regiment of cavalry, were not enough to hold the walls against them and soon they were inside the town, burning and killing.

    The Berber army attack Marrakesh.

I can hear their scouting parties approaching our hideout and I cannot run home knowing I have failed you in such a way. My servant Ali will deliver this message personally and I ask only that you forgive my mistakes.

    Your beloved son,
    Hassan

A letter from Shahid to Abdul-Muiz Eshan

We have taken Marrakesh. Aamir is probably writing a long winded report to that damn old man no doubt full of lies about his warrior exploits.
I've left him behind and marched north to take Fez. Yes, before you start screaming and hitting the servants out of rage keep in mind I have taken this position with the berbers because I WANT POWER. Keep that in mind and your mouth shut and when Shafiq is named Chief we will both reap our reward.
Also, send me reports on the other business and keep an eye out for him, I think he might try to flee.

    S. N.

    Ten Years have passed...

A letter from Ahmed ibn Ahmadin al-Moqtab to Saleh ibn Ahmed Al-Moqtab

God is Great, praise Him and His Holy Prophet Mohammed,

My dear uncle, it has been 2 years since my father passed away and I am now a full man, married to a Tamazigh girl of noble family and permanently residing in Al Djazair. The mighty sultan of the Fatimids has sent a large sum for the proper cerimonies and to honor the Al-Moqtab but I almost cannot control my rage: the hypocrisy of such a vile man, not letting you come to us to force my father into submission; alas, now my father is gone and his reports will be missed by the Sultan.
The Chief of the Berber (he still clings to the old title) is now but a figurehead of the whole kingdom; the real power behind the Chiefdom is the outlander they call Shahid and one Abdul-Muiz Eshan, a zirid destitute noble.
As you have heard, the Calif of Cordoba ended his vassalage with Zirid and sent his troops to take hold of the lands while the Berbers fought the Zenatans. As you know by now the campaign went well and all the Zenatan possessions are by now faithfull provinces of the Berber Realm. I cannot say that the Berber have done a lousy job too, those cities have grow far beyond anything the Zenatans had imagined and the people, which are themselves a berber tribe, welcomed their conquerors as brothers.
That vile man Shahid has established himself as Emir of Fez and his puppet Eshan as Emir of Al-Djazir; while i might think lowly of both of them i must confess that I accepted Eshan's invitation to become his Officer of the Treasury... but let's not speak of him more.
Last year the Calif of Cordoba died. Immediately that dung-headed heir of Aalee strated screaming that the Berber should demand their rights as kin of the Calif (his mother, the Chief's wife, is daughter of the late Calif). With Shahid and Eshan, honey tongued devils as they are, supporting the prince it's not hard to imagine what happened: a emissary sent to the new Calif.
The outcome was the messenger returned by half, or more properly just his head, and a declaration of war. And now comes the more sordid detail: Shahid had infiltrated a spy in the Califate and as soon as he got the declaration of war he managed to turn the region of Toledo to our side!
As I sent this letter he is shipping his troops across the sea into the land of the christians and I can only think that this will spell doom for the nation.
    As always, your caring nephew,

    Ahmed ibn Ahmadin al-Moqtab

Yeah but to be honest I never use auto-save features... meh, just goes to show...
Regardless of that, I'm starting a new AAR.
