This is the province of Åland. Unlike the base-0.60 desert Arab Muslim provinces we've been going after for a while, it is instead a lush green Swedish pagan island province, whose base is 0.60.

ScreenSave741.jpg

And the game continues to taunt me for my failure in putting Berthold of Aargau onto the throne of Aargau. Not only does Szymond of Åland have the perfect name for being the ruler of his province, but he also gets the benefits from ruling a province full of pagan Swedes, whatever they may be.

ScreenSave744.jpg

Johann, on the other hand, is too poor to even let an itinerant bishop in to be his court bishop. He could have used the half-dozen ecclesiastically-educated children that I set off more than a decade ago to be future bishops, but for some reason despite Johann being Catholic and even the province of Abydos being Catholic, upon graduation they all changed to Orthodox.

ScreenSave746.jpg

And since I loaded the game here I also lose my first battle with Marshal Alfonso, because of that bug that resets the morale of all regiments in battle to zero.

ScreenSave750.jpg

Attaboy, Johann. Attaboy.

ScreenSave753.jpg

And for some reason four unrelated male Hungarians showed up at the court one day. I don't really care about the reason. All I know is that their stats are nothing to look at so they'll be turned into hopefully loyal dynasties ruling places I don't care about.

ScreenSave754.jpg

I also grant the title of Acre to my loyal Marshal Alfonso's eldest son, as Alfonso had fought so valiantly there. It might make more sense to give it to Alfonso himself, but if I do that I lose literally the only good marshal in the Duchy.

ScreenSave756.jpg

I also grant the capital of Abydos itself to Johann's infant son! Why do I do this?

ScreenSave757.jpg

Is it because I am afraid that all of my eastern Mediterranean provinces will be taken by the Turk immediately, thus I am planning to retreat far away so that my province nearest to the Turk will be landlocked by the strongest Christian nation in the game?

ScreenSave758.jpg

Nope! It's because I figured out that maybe the Seljuks won't peace with me because I have some of their core provinces. So I tested that theory, and it turned out to be true.

And there you go. The mightiest Muslim empire the game will ever see has had thirteen of its provinces stripped away by a single Duchy over the course of two years. For this achievement, Johann von Habsburg will go down in history as Johann 'The Turk-Slayer' von Habsburg! Even though he never actually had the chance slaughter any Turks at all, ever. Really. Which is good because otherwise he probably would have gone down in history as Johann 'Slayed-by-Turks' von Habsburg. The von Habsburgs ride again in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

Let's hope for your sake that Åland is still a pagan chiefdom, that will make it easier!

Let's hope the next episode has more content. :D

Edit: Ah, yes, now it's here.

Real men did really well against the Turks. Wonderful work!

Real Men don't need an exit strategy for Baghdad, they knew what they were doing before they went there. Onto Aland and its pagan Swedes. Real Men got a lot of other people to do their fighting for them and it worked. The Turks weren't so tough. Come to think of it, they weren't much in evidence.

Off to the north to kill swedes. Fun and profit at the same time.

I should point out that 'Å' is the last letter in the Scandinavian alphabet.

Third-last actually. At least in Swedish.

That's a good son.

ScreenSave761.jpg

And because Alania isn't going to conquer itself.

ScreenSave762.jpg

And because I really can't afford to either keep up mobilized regiments or really let them be attrited away I refuse.

ScreenSave765.jpg

And as he keeps asking I keep refusing, until this happens.

ScreenSave766.jpg

Which is enough for this to happen. Hey is the King of England the guy I excommunicated on a whim years earlier?

ScreenSave767.jpg

Why yes, it is! I hope he doesn't have any hard feelings!

ScreenSave768.jpg

And I guess not!

ScreenSave770.jpg

Time to take on those Albanians.

ScreenSave772.jpg

Also to get a claim on Albret, which I should've done way before claiming silly places like Alcacer do Sal!

ScreenSave775.jpg

And you know what this means! Wife-shopping time!

Of course, I would have preferred to keep Rajiya as her double-digit base martial stat is at this point the only way to stop the ever-declining average martial score of the von Habsburg dynasty. Also one day I was going to offer her as a burnt offering to the Pope for well-needed extra piety. But always look on the bright side of life, I suppose, and the Duchy could really use the money from the marriage duty. Like, really. The von Habsburgs ride again in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

<_<

Well, i thought Åland was first but I guess you will follow the swedish alphabet.

Just joined this AAR, it took me almost as long to read through it as it took anon to grab Abuja!!! :p

Seriously, good work, and a funny AAR. Keep up!

Oh, and Å comes right after Z in the Swedish alphabet (and is the very last letter in the Danish and Norwegian alphabet), so no matter how you look at it, it's really all wrong to be going after Åland right now. :D

Wait, this whole AAR is so... wrong!

Hey whatever happened to that Beck guy that used to rule Al Djazair? Oh it turned out he got annexed by the Kingdom of Beni Helal. Probably because my battles with him completely destroyed his army leaving him unable to fend off any invasions.

ScreenSave778.jpg

Oh well. Time to find a new 16-year-old bride for Johann von Habsburg, and to where else would we look than the beleagured Principality of Kiev holed up in the Caucasus?

ScreenSave779.jpg

Meanwhile Ernst 'Best von Habsburg General' von Habsburg does battle with the Alanians! But the problem is, you see, that Ernst von Habsburg's martial score is 7

ScreenSave780.jpg

While the Alanian Marshal's martial score is twenty-two.

ScreenSave782.jpg

I'm surprised he isn't dead.

ScreenSave783.jpg

As well as these losses being so even.

ScreenSave784.jpg

Oh well time to collect much-needed cash.

ScreenSave786.jpg

This was exactly seven days after the marriage offer was accepted. I've nothing else to say.

ScreenSave790.jpg

And all this time I've been secretly collecting a few of my smaller regiments in Uppland.

ScreenSave792.jpg

So I can do this!

All right that wasn't suprising at all considering that I'm going to have to get Åland next anyways and the attack into Alania is only so that I'd have that province occupied by the time I get Åland. The von Habsburgs ride again in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!
