What about going to war with people you've already grabbed titles on. Then, once you've occupied all their lands, make peace for some piddling amount of gold instead of the title - doesn't that net you massive prestige? I'd come to the conclusion that it had to do with the difference between warscore and peace value - but I could be completely wrong...

The prestige is only massive for King and Duke-titles.

You're right about warscore-peace value =prestige gain.

Need for Prestige.

Chapter 47: Ansbach

As told with many pictures. And a moderate amount of words.

(All formats, fonts, layouts, and even this little disclaimer negotiated successfully from phargle's
Knud Knýtling, Prince of Denmark (and other assorted tales))

Now all I need to do is wait eight years and four months and I'll receive a boost of prestige enough to claim a small province possibly!

ScreenSave1666.jpg

And the King of Germany's decades-long(?) war against its breakaway vassal the Duchy of Milan ends in quite an odd way! I guess it helped that the Mecklemburgers pretty much swallowed up all of his northern demesne holding so when they were taken in the counterattack they were given to counts and marshals leaving the King with little demesne. So the Duke of Milan is the new King of Germany while von Franken or whatever he is is now the King of Burgundy and Italy. Oddly enough, the only vassals to remain with him were a scattering of Burgundian counts. The Italian dukes and counts went over to the new King of Germany.

ScreenSave1671.jpg

Johann's second son Ernst's marriage to the 70-year-old Hungarian chancellor pushes Johann's prestige over the top.

ScreenSave1672.jpg

So really that didn't take very long! Also apparently the Duchy can take on Hungary which is the third-strongest Christian kingdom all by itself.

ScreenSave1674.jpg

The system works!

ScreenSave1679.jpg

And a bonus!

ScreenSave1681.jpg

Now the Jimenezs control the majority of my court, but not enough to override a veto.

ScreenSave1684.jpg

This of course raises the question of just how these tiny counties are getting such large sums of gold while their kings are completely impoverished. It does not raise the question of whether or not I will take it however, as no amount of gold can buy back lost time.

ScreenSave1685.jpg

I think only half of those twelve thousand are mine, with the rest being Germans, but I got the siege anyway.

ScreenSave1687.jpg

And that's Ansbach.

And when I peace with the Kingdom of Hungary I can marry my freshly-unmarried sons to them again for more prestige! Imagine what would have happened if I thought more than a few months ahead and saw this prestige bottleneck coming? Well there are still ways to rectify it. The adventures of Johann von Habsburg will be right back in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

Well, you've certainly found a rather nice form of fraud there, in a way. :p

What does this game have against maps anyway.

And so Anti-Atlas, hidden away in the southwest corner of the map, certainly would have stayed safe from faraway crusading Christians who were undoub- DAMMIT!

ScreenSave1691.jpg

Well surely such a puny county won't take much prestige to- NOPE!

ScreenSave1693.jpg

But who cares? Who will be laughing years from now when the University of Abydos is finished?

ScreenSave1697.jpg

Those silly Hungarians won't give a peace so I regretfully let another high-base-income-German-province go. But this time I'm being gamey by giving it to a daughter!

ScreenSave1698.jpg

Well more gamey than usual, as such a move is a gamey move that destroys your opponent's motivation to fight you by removing their claim against you, despite the province remaining in your realm!

ScreenSave1700.jpg

And the very day after the peace proposal arrives at the Hungarian court, marriage proposals do as well.

ScreenSave1702.jpg

Enough to do this!

ScreenSave1705.jpg

Hmm I wonder what Alfonso is doing... Eh, it's probably absolutely nothing at all.

ScreenSave1706.jpg

Huh I don't remember that being there last time I checked.

ScreenSave1707.jpg

And that's what happens if you're at war with several strong Muslim powers while an inbred toddler is on your throne.

Yeah that Alfonso isn't doing anything at all. It would be best to ignore him completely and not worry your little head. See how the war ends - and how Johann tries to salvage his reputation - in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

Let me guess- Antiocheia is in the demesne of the Byzantine Emperor, whoever he is. Which is why you are sending troops to his capital.

Chapter 48: Anti-Atlas

As told with many pictures. And a moderate amount of words.

ScreenSave1708.jpg

Surprisingly enough this is actually the first time I've ever declared war on the Byzantine Empire!

ScreenSave1711.jpg

Oh that's very nice. Did Reinhard become Pope?

ScreenSave1713.jpg

Nope! I guess the Duke of Cumberland just kicked the bucket and the game realized that since Eberhard's only relative is his female von Habsburg wife that I must get the controllership. Or because the player is the default PC if the old one dies and the Pope has no relatives. It would have been nice if the Duke of Cumberland had left some prestige for me to excommunicate with, though.

ScreenSave1716.jpg

And the ten-thousand-man army of Alfonso Jimenez takes on the struggling Byzantine holdouts. Note that Byzantium is still at war with the Seljuks and the Medinans and by doing this I am accelerating their demise.

ScreenSave1719.jpg

And since Anti-Atlas happens to be surrouned by Al-Murabitids (WHY is it the only Christian province in the region) I make peace with them.

ScreenSave1720.jpg

Victory was a sure thing.

ScreenSave1722.jpg

So this is apparently one of the Russian count vassals of the Byzantines offering me thousands in gold. Which is more inexplicable, the Byzantines having a couple of counties in Pskov or one of those counties having thousands in gold?

ScreenSave1725.jpg

Against the Alfonso the Byzantine Emperor himself contended in vain.

ScreenSave1726.jpg

And with this the Croatians are down to two provinces.

ScreenSave1727.jpg

Bad news: Reinhard von Habsburg died, so he will not become the Pope. Good news: Reinhard von Habsburg died, so he may reign as the Bishop of Anti-Atlas forevermore.

Now that's job security! Though unfortunately the plan to make dead Reinhard Pope cannot go through, for you see Reinhard was the cousin of Stefan von Habsburg, and his siblings are many and did oft reproduce. In fact nearly every von Habsburg count is either the nephew or grand-nephew of Reinhard, making every one of them closer to him than Johann. If only I planned ahead so that a von Habsburg of the main line became Pope! But that is one of the many things that this game was not 100% optimal in. See how the war ends - and how Johann tries to salvage his reputation - in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

Real Men Approve The Use Of Zombie-Bishops!

After all of Reinhard's hard work prdocing little von Hapsburg, he deserves to be Bishop (Undead) of Anti-Atlas. Perchance, he will find out what happened to the Pro-Atlas province?

Is the main direct line of the Von H's in danger of dying out? Is the family tree suffering from Dutch Elm disease?

Let us see Johan's family tree to know that all is well?

Bah, you can raise more men than the Seljuks now.

Braaaaaaains.

Also, accelerating the demise of the Byzantines is quite helpful for you. After all, if the rest of Europe is controlled by independent Muslim states (as they soon would become), that means you don't have to worry about getting claims or having to get the provinces in a peace deal. ;)

Tick Tock Antioch Eia.

This is the province of Antiocheia.

ScreenSave1729.jpg

This is the Count of Antiocheia. Hey didn't I just fight these guys?

ScreenSave1736.jpg

Take that Byzantines!

ScreenSave1737.jpg

And if prestige from war is really warscore - winnings then that's really weird and counterintuitive.

ScreenSave1739.jpg

Oh and this is just the last and most unbelievable of four marriages of old female von Habsburgs to members of the Hungarian court. These were widows and spinsters in their late twenties at the earliest but the Hungarian king accepted them all!

ScreenSave1742.jpg

Now I can excommunicate, after only six months of waiting!

ScreenSave1743.jpg

See it would have been 354 without the excom, so that was really useful.

ScreenSave1744.jpg

And to war. The outcome of the pending battle is obvious.

ScreenSave1749.jpg

They offered while my offer was still pending, which is funny.

ScreenSave1751.jpg

Even the Duke agreed to give me all his money.

Man why can't the King of Hungary be as accomodating as the Duke of Brittany? They're both grey aren't they? Johann indulges in a little von Habsburg tradition when we return in the next exciting episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!

What, Inbreeding?

Loosing a battle with the odds being 5:1 in his own favour.

An Apulia a day is one too many.

Chapter 50: Apulia

As told with many pictures. And a moderate amount of words.

(All formats, fonts, layouts, and even this little disclaimer begged pathetically from phargle's
Knud Knýtling, Prince of Denmark (and other assorted tales))

ScreenSave1752.jpg

This is the province of Apulia.

ScreenSave1753.jpg

The guy who owns it is a Greek Catholic with an Italian last name.

ScreenSave1755.jpg

Hold onto this will you?

ScreenSave1756.jpg

Only a one-month wait to excommunicate this time.

ScreenSave1757.jpg

Saved me nearly 300 prestige, too.

ScreenSave1759.jpg

Well, to battle!

ScreenSave1760.jpg

Or not I guess.

ScreenSave1761.jpg

Yeah the fact that Venice is about to fall to the Seljuks is actually a lot more interesting than the nothing that is now happening in Apulia.

ScreenSave1765.jpg

And the fact that Venice is where my armies in Apulia are headed after Apulia was taken and annexed is more interesting than actually showing them taking control of it and annexing it.

ScreenSave1766.jpg

This picture isn't even important because of it showing that I have given Apulia to Johann's daughter. No it is much more relevant that our badboy is now so high that even Johann's own daughter would, if given enough time, plot a civil war against him that will destroy all he has spent his whole life striving for.

And so the traditional enemy of the rapid conqueror rears its ugly head. The Great Equalizer, which is feared more in Crusader Kings than in any other Paradox game. So the only question that remains is: Just how dirty will the dirty tricks have to get to get around this? All questions will be answered, and the Italians will finally arrive, in the next thrilling episode of Real Men Do It Alphabetically, an AARgau!
