Post fAARq (FAQ for AARland) - Feedback Thread

fAARq - what is it? A FAQ for AARland.

Due to the number of threads that pop up from time to time asking general questions that always seem to arise when a newcomer joins the group, we thought it might be beneficial for AARland to have its own FAQ. The thought is to begin building the listing in another thread I will start soon. Once stickied, it will serve as a useful tool in navigating around this part of the forum. From projects to "how-to" and including links to further discussion, we will attempt to build a useful guide to newcomers and old-hat alike.

In initial discussion, I have put together a small listing of subjects to cover, and as we start to build the FAQ, I will also begin including the links pointing you in the right direction for more on the subject. First off, here is that listing:

    1. "How to..." - helpful hints on deciding to write/styles/updating speed/layout
    2. Screenshots
    3. Comments
    4. Research
    5. Hints on writing (outlines, character sheets, etc.)
    6. pdfs
    7. Non-Paradox AARs
    8. Multi-Author/Collaborative AARs
    9. "What is it?" - short descriptions of the features of AARland including librAARies, SolAARium, Awards, newsletters and other initiatives
    10. Starting an initiative in AARland

I encourage anyone and everyone to feel free to offer your thoughts on the structure/subjects and/or links to threads or posts you find useful for the FAQ. As information is gathered here, we will add it to the FAQ, thus keeping it up to date and as complete as possible.

I was initially wondering what the hell you wanted to do with the FARC... Never mind.

Good idea. The point 5 is more or the less covered by the solAARium though. Perhaps this would be useful to build a synthesis of it and then put a link to it for further details.

I might write a few topics for this FAQ: since I always feel like a beginer whatever I do, I sympathise for them. Problem is available time, as always. I'll try to let you know tomorow which topic(s) I could initiate and when.

It occurs to me that it might be worthwhile linking directly to several of the gazette articles for some of the questions. I was thinking particularly about that series of articles on screenshots by (?) MacRaith.

Great idea COZ1. And could you perhaps include linkies to the Advocate when we write on one of those subjects

This putting of "AAR" into every possible word is getting seriously out of hand. AARther thAARn that, AARcellent ideAAR!

Well we do like our terrible puns in AARland

However, I think for this particular idea actually there be a point to dispensing with the 'AAR' for the sake of clarity and easy comprehension.

I agree, anyone who abuses the AAR letters sacredness should be punished be having to say the Brahmic alphabet backwards for 50 times.

But this is not the case, as the AAR in faq is used to differentiate the average faq from the faq about AAR. Only to imagine a poor unsuspecting user who would look into a fAArq thinking it is a “how to post” faq, oh the horror

I had planned on calling it The fAARq - FAQ for AARland. I assumed that would be clear enough for those that saw it.

Links will definitely be involved to all major initiatives in AARland, as well as links to pertinent articles, threads and posts under each of the subheadings. I hope to make it rather simple with easy to understand bullet-point ideas and then underneath that, linking to further discussion for those interested in learning more. That way, we might be able to highlight the better portions of the SolAARium especially (though stnylan did make an index of it two years ago) but also Gazette and Advocate AARticles and Issues, and many lost threads that long ago fell to page 20.

And the nice part is, we can allow it to grow as we find more information. Any of the mods can edit it when it is needed and this thread will remain (as well as the PM function) for the members to direct us to important discussions. I doubt we'll need to write on some of the subjects again considering many of them have been discussed several times over the years. The info has always been there - just hard to get at. Hopefully that won't be much of a problem anymore.

I probably won't start building it until the weekend, so plenty of time for further ideas, suggestions, what have you. Good to see some positive feedback already.
