    Part twentythree

After the success of the last days in their back the papal forces tryed to take the next city. They attacked Mantua immediatly after arriving in at the citywalls. But this time fortune was on the side of the Germans. The walls of Mantua had been strenghten by an italian engineer just a couple years before the war had started and was well prepared for an attack. Still it was a very hard fight. The wall was broken in sveral places and italian troops stormed into the city. But the defender fought bravely and repelled the attack under heavy casualties. This bravery should mark the turningpoint of the war.

Although the german siege at Paris was broken again, and 6000 men died, the Germans had a major advantage now.

On January 1st 1602 26000 men armed with state of the art Muskets arrived in Tirol. Ready to storm down onto the papal forces in Mantua.

They only waited till the city of Piemonte fell to German troops, and more men were ready to attack the papal army. When it was time, the German army from Piemonte attacked first, drawing the attention on them. After the first battles began the 26000 men stormed down the alpes and crushed into the flank of the italian troops. The moral of the italian army was wavering, but it broke when the defender of Mantua started a breakout, opening a third front in this battle. The enemy fled in panic and 15000 of his men died. The danger from the pope was banned for some months. The German army moved on to retake Lombardia from the pope. In the meanwhile the french had dispatched a force to retake Piemonte.

But they did not stay long. When the King of France got news of the Fall of Champagne and Provence to german troops, several revolts inside of his country and the German army marching onto Paris again he called his troops back.

But this action made no difference. With Nivernais taken by Germany and enemy troops still advancing onto Paris he accepted a peace offer brought to him by a messenger.
Wessex should go to England, and the cities of Gander, Provence and Piemonte as well as the tradingposts of Salvador and Louga to Germany. Emperor Joachim hade taken a big step to the unification of all the HRE provinces under his rule, and gained the first mediteranian port for Germany.

The peace with France did arrive not one day to soon though, as massive religious revolt was breaking out, as ALL Provinces, where missionaries had been send to were uprising one by one. A real bushfire had erupted in Germany, with people all over the country going onto the streets and rebelling for more religous freedom and tolerance. But Emperor Joachim did not think of any reforms. He did not move a bit and sentenced everybody who dared to put up armes against Germany to death. At first though, the war versus Venice and the pope continued. Wittelsbacher quickly captured Milan back form papal rule and marched with a far superior army versus the a new force besieging Mantua.

The rulers of venice though saw the bloodshet that was about to begin, and the internal problems of Germany who actually needed every man to fight the rebells. So a peace for a small sum was offered and accepted by Germany.
Now a phase of badly needed consolidation could start and new conversions could begin.

    Good to See France defeated.

Unlucky to get all failed conversions =[....It's really bad when you spend lots of money and it fails....
Anyway, good luck next time with those conversions

    Thumbs up

Shame about the religious revolts, but good news with France...German influence grows ever increasingly.

Just how much money did you give Venice for peace btw?

This is one of those moments, that the less educated (such as you and I ) need to search google "Arelate definition"....from what I can tell its a city in Provence.

The city of Arles used to be a major Roman administrative centre. When Burgundy split away from the Carolingian Empire a kingdom ended up coalescing around Arles, which became one of the parts of the Holy Roman Empire, and that region was sometimes called the Arelate. It avoids confusion with mediaeval Burgundy, which of course meant something rather different

    Hurrah for the Med port!

So, once you finish consolidation, will it be east or west?
