Colonel David Ogilvy was straitening his tie as the phone in his shared office rang.

"Sir, your transport has arrived”

“Thanks Gracie, now hurry off down to the shelter. Bombs are blind – and don’t know a neutral from a hostile.”

“OK boss…. And good luck….”

“Bye Gracie, give my love to the girls.”

David moved over to the wall safe and opened it. Carefully removing a brown paper wrapped parcel, he checked to see it was ready to go and started down the stairs. He could hear the sirens blaring out their insistent warnings - bombers on the way.

As he descended into the foyer of the Embassy, the MPs on guard straitened and saluted. David barely noticed. Returning their salute he moved on out into the dark of London.

Already the search lights were stabbing fingers of light into the air. The sound of the coming raid could be heard. David wondered how the citizens of London could withstand the onslaught of hundreds of tons of bombs dropped on the night after night. “Bloody War” swore David, as the Tu-4s came ever closer.

“Over here sir” A voice called out in the darkness. In the gloom light by the faint backwash of the searchlights, David could just make out his chauffer and an Embassy car. As he came closer he could make out the little US flag drooping from the bonnet.

As the car started to move out onto the city streets, they were virtually the only vehicle moving. Anyone with any sense was now underground – sheltered in some cellar or railway station. The only people they saw were Wardens and Firemen, braced for the firestorms to come.

Suddenly the car screeched to a halt. “Bloody hell!” exclaimed his driver. “Dammit, now I’ll have to find another way”. In front of them just barely distinguishable from the darkness around was a bomb crater. “Well spotted man!” responded David. “I hope this wont hold us up too much – its important that I am on time.” He glanced at the package cradled in his lap and sighed.

Soon they were at the Downing Street barricade. As David exited the car he leaned into the driver’s window and said. “Don’t wait for me, I'll be OK” The driver hesitated for a moment, then spoke softly “Good luck sir” He quickly put the car into gear and drove off

The bombs were falling some distance away as a Bobby escorted David to the door of No.10. It seemed he was expected as the door was open. He was invited in by a sombre looking butler or some other sort of English flunky. “This way sir,” the servant said as he led the way along a corridor to a stairwell.

Waiting at the steps was the US ambassador himself. “Hello David” he said with his hand outstretched. Bemused, David reached out his hand and they shook. “Sir” he replied.

“Don’t look so surprised David! You know how important this mission is. I've just come to wish you good luck!”

“Sir, I’m beginning to get a phobia about all this luck wishing!”

“Well don’t forget the President is relying on you. And General Eisenhower personally recommends you – so don’t let your Commanding Officer and the people of the United States of America down!”

Once more David straitened his tie, and parcel firmly in his grasp, started to descend the stairs as the sirens wailed and the bombs fell.

first feelings are that the package contains data to make the bomb. however, common sense says not so... that said, it seems that the Soviets have conquered the mainland...

excellent start! ! !

Wasn't there an Oglivy in the War of the Worlds?

The stairs did not go as deep as David had presumed. He and the servant turned left along a corridor and then up some more stairs. Through a door and they were outside once more. “What the hell’s going on here? Thought David, and wished he had been able to wear a side-arm.

In the gloom, he looked nervously about. “This way Sir” prompted the butler. David sighed and followed.

Along darkened Downing Street they walked until they came to s small flight of stairs down to a basement door. His guide knocked, and the door opened a crack. Light streamed out. “Yes?” queried a woman’s voice.

“It’s the American Gent, Ma’am – Colonel Ogilvy.”

The door opened wider and David was ushered in. “Come in, come in” The woman encouraged. “Welcome to Number 1 Storey’s Gate – or ‘The Dungeon’ to its inmates” she laughed.

In the light of the flickering globe David recognised his welcomer. “Miss Ive, a pleasure to meet you”

“Ooo, aren’t you a saucey one!” she simpered as he took her hand and kissed it! “My mum warned me about you Yanks. You can call me Ruth”

“So where to now Ruth?”

“This way” she replied and led David past two burly looking British Marines down a short corridor to a narrow stairwell, which she started to descend.

David hesitated. “Sir” One of the guards spoke,. “Its pretty steep. Would you like me to look after your package while you climb down.”

“Then how would I collect my package?” queried David.

“I could toss it down” smiled the soldier, “or send it down the stores lift”.

“Thanks but no thanks” David replied. And holding his parcel even tighter he started to negotiate the stairs.

As he reached the bottom, Ruth was waiting. They moved out into a busy corridor, The sound of the diesel-driven air conditioner’s ever-present rumble, seemed to seep into David’s bones. There were people everywhere.

The corridor stretched a long way to left and right – its ends obscured by the activity. Phones were ringing constantly. Typewriters were clacking and people were talking loudly.

“Is it always like this?” questioned David.

“Gosh! You ought to have seen it in ‘44” Ruth responded. “Its was a madhouse!”

Ruth stepped out confidently, with David close on her heels. Moving left from the entrance they pressed through the hurrying secretaries and bureaucrats till they came to yet another stairwell. “I’ll leave you here. Go on down. And good luck!”

“Anymore luck and I could sink a battleship” grumbled David and he carefully descended ever further into the earth.

Sir Humphrey TU4s? Blimey. I wonder what will, or perhaps has happened?

As usual Sir Humph’s you are right on the ball. I also wonder what will happen – I am still working up to the actual start of the game – still some fine tuning – not so much mods as fiddling with freedom and acceptall. I have had to play several nations to get the situation I desire. All that work will be explored as history through the game. But more on that when I actually get to play my game!

lifeless Im guessing the package has something to do with the mission and the good lucks...and that is wierd...TU 4s...and Eisenhower!

Lifeless you are right, the package has something to do with the mission. TU4s of course date the scene. And Eisenhower….. Well….. Hmmm…….

GhostWriter first feelings are that the package contains data to make the bomb. however, common sense says not so... that said, it seems that the Soviets have conquered the mainland..

I like your first feelings GW, but I respect your common sense! It does seem the Sovs have conquered the mainland doesn’t lt?

Michaeru The name Ogilvy reminds me of Comrade Ogilvy from 1984 ...
What has happened? Have the Soviets come around to bring the revolution to England?

Damn Michaeru you are sharp! Ogilvy is a fictitious character Winston produces in one of the greatest novels of all time. See if you can pick other references (easter eggs?) through the AAR. (Some references are more subtle than others) ;)

Stroph1 Lots of hints that things are amiss. Now to wait for answers...

Answers will be forthcoming – some faster than others!

Sir Humphrey Wasn't there an Oglivy in the War of the Worlds?

I will have to check on that – but to answer the question that is not asked – no - there are no aliens in this AAR

Ghostwriter, MIG-15, Sir Humphry, Lifeless, Michaeru, Stroph1 Thanks for your encouragement – I hope to start the ball rolling soon.

BTW Does anyone know how I could delete "The Blitz" from the title of my AAR? It is really only a chapter heading.

PM a MOD! they are really nice chaps who will be very willing to accommodate your request!

could we see a map, pretty please with a cherry on top
:D

Thank you MOD - whoever you are! A lesson learnt! :eek:o
could we see a map, pretty please with a cherry on top
Once I start the game (for the purposes of writing the AAR) I will post a map - in fact I will give you an overview of the whole world and how it got to be as it is!

So patience grasshopper! :)

In actual fact, thename Oglivy struck me from that movie, there was no hidden question. ;)

Just a note to ask for your patience readaars. Since my last post, my boss quit and I have had to pick up the pieces. I have not had time to scratch myself. My only relief is to take a little time to read others great AARs.

The Staff Officaar is a work in progress, but is on hold for the forseeable future. I would guess at least another month before I can resume my wrting.

So my apologies - and might I say, so far I am doing at least another 10-12 hours work for no extra pay! The rotten sods!

That's too bad. But it did give me the chance to catch up with you. Very nice start. I await the chance when you are able to get back to it. I'll follow along.

Hi all - the job just gets more hectic daily! But I needed to get a little more of the story down. Sorry no pics - but that would have taken more time. I will will edit them in when I get some spare moments!

22:55 August 15th 1948

As David descended the steep stairwell, he attempted to prepare himself for the coming interview. His thoughts kept wondering though – especially when he felt the violent shudder of an explosion somewhere close by. He wondered if the Ambassador was OK. Hell! He wondered how anyone could have survived the nightly bombing raids of the Russians and Germans.- and yet the people of London “soldiered on”. He wondered how the bomber pilots aimed for their targets now that St. Paul’s was a pile of rubble. Follow the river up to London and look for the white dome of the cathedral – that’s what the Germans had done. “What do the bloody Reds do?” He wondered.

Suddenly he was at the bottom of the stairs. He waited – uncertain what to do next. Through a door he could see another long hallway. Coming toward him were two men dressed in the uniform of the civil service – discrete tailored suits – all that was missing were trilbys and umbrellas. Their heads were down intent on some papers they were discussing. Just as David opened his mouth to speak they turned sharp right and he could hear a door close.

After waiting some minutes he finally stepped out into the corridor. Unlike the floor above – here there was no-one to be seen. The clatter of the diesel run air conditioner, the only sound to be heard. He looked toward where the two bureaucrats had disappeared. The sign on the door read “BBC radio B2”. There was a large red light shining above the door with another sign which read. “When light is on please do not enter” He stepped closer and could just make out the sounds of someone speaking with a very Etonian /Oxford accent.

“….minister is calling for public calm. The news of the most recent losses in the Atlantic will certainly mean a tightening of the rationing system. But, he says, “the loss of vessels, Commonwealth and Neutrals alike, will never make Britain bend the knee to the Bolsheviks”. He went on to say that his sympathies go out to all the families who have suffered the loss of a loved one in the most recent convoy raids.”

Ogilvy stepped back – he felt as though he had just listened into an intimate family conversation. Britain and the Commonwealth were doing it hard he thought. He started to walk down the hallway. Doors to right and left opened onto rooms large and small – some recognizable as offices and overnight accommodation, others less easy to categorize. There was a mouldy smell about the place. And no matter how hard the air conditioner worked it seemed a little damp. Finally as he reached the end of the passage the door facing him opened.

“Mr Ogilvy?” a lady enquired.

“Mrs Churchill?” he responded.

She laughed “Oh no! Call me Clemmie – everyone does!” Seeing his uncertain look she smiled warmly, “Come in! Come in! Winston has been waiting ages to meet you.” As he stepped through the doorway – it was if he was moving from some efficient wartime bunker into another place – another world. He was gazing on the furnishings of a comfortable home. “Do you like it?” Clemmie asked. “I designed it all myself! Nothing like having the comforts of home. Winnie does fret so! Bunkers and Winston do NOT mix well!”

“Oh no err… Clemmie – it is lovely – it’s just such a surprise. It’s not what I expected!” David replied.

“Now you mustn’t let Winnie put you off! He’s not feeling the best at the moment. His ‘Black Dog’ has made itself comfortable.” David knew about Sir Winston’s ‘Black Dog” the name he gave his moments of depression. He certainly had a lot to be depressed about!

“So! Here we are” Clemmie said. They had moved through a lounge area and a bedroom, all tastefully done, and arrived at a door. Clemmie tapped tentatively. “Winnie – are you decent? I have Colonel Ogilvy with me, he’s come to say hello.”

“Send him in” The voice was unmistakable – David gripped his package tight and stepped through the doorway.
