Davout - 1936-37 got embroiled in the Abyssinian War, and 1938 wasn' till the Summer. Still there will be a brief cricket update in my response to Durry below;

Duritz - Alas Durry for 36-37 Butterflies from the Abyssinian War (selectors being called up and so on) meant Len Hutton and Dennis Compton get called earlier and the tragically overlooked quick Alf Gover gets a chance in the Ashes. Different player and less injuries to the squad meant Hedley Verity could continue his fine record of bowling Bradman and, though close, Australia lost the series 2-3 I'm afraid.

Look on the brightside though, without those scores the Don no longer finishes tantalising close to an average of 100 but instead falls safely short.

Nathan Madien / TheExecuter - It was cricket, something I'm sure you'll be relieved to know will not form the basis of a future update.

That's evil Pip. Even as a Brit I have to accept Bradman's sheer awesomeness.

I never thought of your work as fiction until now... my idol has fallen.

Thanks Lord Strange. It's nice to know at least one Englishman still maintains the highest standards of British fair play and sportsmanship.

Given that people like me have absolutely no idea what cricket is (other than the fact that it is also a bug), perhaps you could do a brief butterflied cricket update. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch, considering you have made fine updates about the most minute thing.

A British AAR that has a cricket update...sounds British to me.

Though it's still fun beating you in the Ashes. Repeatedly. Especially Edgbaston 05, when Shane Warne stepped on his own wicket. That's one of the best moments of my life so far (I was there)

I'm sure it was. My first cricket memories were of Chris Broad, Gower, Gatting, Gooch, that bastard Botham et al terrorising our lads in the late 1980's. In fact I still model my batting stance on Chris Broad with the raised backlift.

1989 was a joyous time for me, as were the 1990's (Warnie's ball of the century anyone?!?) and the early 2000's!

But fair play to England. They've scoured the Empire for the best cricketers and pinched them to play for the mother country and had recent success. Until we rise up and restore the natural order then it's your right, nay your duty, to give it to us.

But for Pippy to try and steal our Don's glory... well that's just not cricket!

Careful what you wish for Nathan Madien... cricket and 'brief' don't go arm in arm. Our international matches last 5 days and in the years of this AAR some were timeless (the record I believe is 9 days and that match still wasn't completed as the English tourists needed to catch their boat home).

A 'brief' cricket update is likely to take Pippy a year or so to produce and won't progress the story at all... so, erm, I guess that means he'll do it after all. :)

Seriously? Nine days? I don't think any American sport last more than a few hours...much less nine days!

Advertisers would love that though. Nine days to spam the airwaves with loud, obnoxious messages promoting pointless, irrelevant and overpriced bull. Whoever thought up basketball and baseball was obviously not exploring the commercial possibilities far enough.

This is why cricket commentators have brought the art of commenting on irrelevancies (like the weather, passing birds, and other such things) to an art form of the highest caliber.

Oops, my apologies. It lasted 10 days... South Africa v England in the Fifth test, lasting from 3 to 14 March 1939.

The final day's match report can be found here

Check out the 'current events' at the bottom...

Some news - I now have a house! Huzzahs all round!

However this means I have had no time for writing and probably wont have any for the foreseeable future while moving. And I'm about to lose my internet sometime today while the phone line and broadband is moved to the new address.

But if you've managed to live with my update speed so far I hope this delay just seems par for the course!

Congrats for the house!

Now, Pip, tell me: you're planning to have your sons ending this AAR, aren't you? Or is about your grandsons that you're thinking about?

:D

Congrats on the house Pip! We'll look forward to the massive tank/FAA/ fall of the Eden govt (or whatever!) bash when the dust settles. ;-)

Huzzah to that!

Congrats on the house Pip. Remember to set the study up first! ;)

Good job, El Pip! I am glad you have a house now. :)

They still have studies in 2011?

Good work on the home front

...they still have studies, plus brandy and enormous cuban cigars - which I trust El Pip has indulged in, as a celebration. Moving house is no fun - I last did it in '97, and I still shudder at the memory of that time!

So settle in, do all the much-needed things, and then come talk to us of aircraft porn or the like...
