Damned holidays, I've now lost my prized top of the page slot. Curses!

Kurt_Steiner - Congratulations on a marvellous string of non sequiturs. I am most impressed.

Carlstadt Boy - Japan has appeared as someone mentioned it and I was reminded I have some unresolved butterflies out there. Mind you I've got those everywhere so I'm planning on using the 'If no-one notices...' approach to pruning. Japan however has been noticed.

Duritz - I can see a certain amount of Rudd in Nev now you (indirectly) mention it.....

DonnieBaseball - My ongoing 'Have things go wrong' campaign required Austen to fall off his perch, I couldn't have another convenient survival.

TheExecuter - Hacker would be a fine choice, with Sir Humphrey running foreign policy Britain would steer clear of the ruinous expense of WW2.

soulking - I think of it as a feature, but I can understand those who chose 'insane' as a descriptor.

Chief Ragusa - That is an argument for making Nev Chancellor, not PM. More importantly while he did achieve some success I would argue he was much more a social reformer than industrial wiz. For instance while the Factories Act was a good piece of reform for worker it also increased costs for British industry, hardly legislation designed to help factories hum.

merrick - The portents aren't good for the job it's true. However the election was very late 1935 so there's still 3.5 years of being PM on offer, a tempting prize for any politician.

caffran - Of course the Japs are up to something! It's just the direction that is less than certain..

Davout - But what about the charming cad Duff Cooper hey?

Nathan Madien - Reform is a word so abused it can be taken to mean anything at all. For instance you can get the Adam Smith Institute and the Trade Unions to agree on the vital need for tax 'reform', it's just they think that word means completely different things!

Duritz - Indeed. Sadly people's reading of the Beveridge Report was a bit selective, I think too many politicians got a copy that completely missed the part on the 'Great Evil' of idleness.

Vann the Red - I confess Duff Cooper would be the sartorial choice and it would be delightful to see such an outstanding bounder let loose on Europe. However as merrick has alluded to, some people may not see those as entirely convincing arguments for electing him leader, the heathens.

    Duritz - Holidays sir, holidays.

Davout - Compared to the Australian elections this will be a model of speed and efficiency. Mind you I can see similarities, in both cases whatever happens an Australian wont get the job....

    While on the subject of voting;
    Spain - 11
    Tech Porn - 7
    Japan - 2

Tech porn stagnates, Spain races into a shock lead and Japan has just left the starting blocks. Update sometime this week, maybe. Hopefully. Perhaps.
Inevitable Defeat - Slovakia '44 - The award winning characters Tiso and Tuka attempt to save Slovakia from defeat and destruction. It probably wont end well. It definitely did win an AARland Choice Comedy Award. Now Back from the Dead and updating.

    Comrade

My apologies for harassing you while on holidays. They are a hard won right for workers and it's good to see that although you maintain Unions are no good you continue to enjoy the benefits of their labour!

Anywho, good to have you back. In this time of political uncertainty it's good to have some certainty in my life... and waiting for you to update has been the most constant emotion I've had in the past few years!

Oh, and +1 for those plucky lads from Republican Spain!

Excellent suggestion--I'm actually finishing up painting my house this week--should be all dry by Thursday evening. ; )

Duritz - It's glad to see your historical revisionism skills are still working well, you'll need them to explain why picking Wales' least missed export as a leader was in fact a good idea!

Nathan Madien - I may have to adopt that as one of the mottos of this AAR.

DonnieBaseball - Far too soon! Next week perhaps?

    Melkor-Morgoth - Well said.

OK, but before I explain it I'd be interested in what you consider Wales' most missed export to be...

Charlotte Church. Sorry, Dury - you asked the question. I just give the answers.

BTW does Labor really want to try to govern with Larry, Curlie & Moe in 1 saddle bag and the rainbows and unicorn party in the other one? Sounds like a recipe for disaster whenever the next election rolls around which may not be too far away.

    Also, +1 Spain

In defense of the Three Stooges, they know how to create jobs: make a big mess and hire people to clean it up.

I guess I didn't really expect anyone here to say David Lloyd George...

You say it like we should just throw our arms up in the air and say it's all a bit too hard. What sort of signal would that send? A political party that doesn't want control of government might as well not bother standing candidates.

    The options for Labor are:
    1. Form a minority government; or
    2. Let the Mad Monk form a minority government.

    For us... that's no choice!

BTW - Don't expect an election for three years. These independants are in too good a position to force anyone back to the polls early!

    +1 Republican Spain.

As idf Dury, it's down to Labor. Another despised leader (and how quickly she sobecame)of a labor party desperately trying to cling on to power after a lost election. Incedibly the party with the most seats the Liberal -Nationa lCoalition is denied caretaker office and the first chance to form a governemnt. Perhaps this is the defining moment when Australia finally abandioned a winners mentality for a losers. Last time labor was this arrogant, the Governor-General called an election.

And to think a few short months ago, you were laughing at our apparent electoral stalemate.

The solution aside from the call another election is
round up all the republicans in the labor party MPs and shot them as traitors to the Crown -might be popular in some quarters, but I can't summon up the enthusiasm for it

An amusing resolution might be for supporrters of the previously outed PM form a new party and join with the Liberal and National Coalition -now that I'd like to see.

My thoughts and prayers, however , go to the people of Christchuch, New Zealand, who have endured a 7.1 earthquake and a 7.0 after shock.

The Conservatives will still be picking a new leader after you've updated Spain, gone down the farm on more tractors and dipped into the USa and Japan. It's a difficult choice. None of the candidates is quite what the situation calls for.

Firstly, I will get the game related content out of the way so I don't get distracted - + 1 Spain and Anthony Eden for PM, to bring youth and energy to Britain. (BTW I suspect El Pip is being so slow in the updates because he is engrossed in Tony Blair's new book)

To Dury, it is not Tony Abbott you have to worry about, it is the thought of Joe Hockey in charge of treasury. Come back, Peter Costello, all is forgiven!

To Chief Ragusa, Julia is actually a very good operator who deserved to start from a better position than the guaranteed electoral debacle she acquired. Her main problem is the 2 undead Labor governments in Queensland and New South Wales which she relies on for support within the party but which are a drag on her image to the public. No government that relies on the consistent vote of Bob Katter can last long.

Also agreed on the best wishes to the people of Christchurch. Very lucky in timing, if that is possible, as they had a Rugby Test there only a couple of weekends ago. I shudder to think wwhat might have been if the earthquake had hit then. All the bests, cuzs.

No she deserves nothing. She's good only for back stabbing. She didn't have to call a general election. Her timing was not what you'd expect from a shrewd political operator. She's despised.

    Kevin, is that you?!?

Firstly, yes I did laugh at the UK not long ago. I'll take my licks on that one. But can I ask that as you send me to the wall and start loading the guns of the firing squad that you ignore common practice and give everyone a live round. Wouldn't want the buggers sleeping at night after my death... Long live the Republic!

Secondly, the constitution is very clear that the incumbant should remain as the caretaker Prime Minister until a new government is formed... we got that system off the UK. Oh, and as for your statement that the Coalition hold more seats they have 72 seats, the same as Labor. There is another National from Western Australia but he has refused to join a Coalition caucus because the WA Nationals have gone 'feral' (in the words of their own leader).

Thirdly, Rudd became leader by knocking off the previous leader. He can hardly complain when he was defeated in the same way... come to think of it Abbott got his job the same way... funny that!

Lastly, but not least, although we did not win neither did anyone else and so all sides are attempting to form a stable government... and if the Coalition can do so then they will form government. Lovely thing this Westminster system, so democratic.

Oops, no lastly is that the evil, back stabbing, despised Julia Gillard is still leading every poll as preferred Prime Minister!

Davout - I'll respectfully disagree. Hockey may be a fool but Abbott is one scary dude!

    Cheers,
