I would like to thank Backfire (who is no longer active here) for starting this thread back in 2004!

There is plenty to say about how much impact the "fans" have in this writing forum. Like with any written medium -- it wouldn't exist if no one read it!

And, more to the point, on an unpaid forum, no writer knows they're being read unless fans pop up to encourage, cajole, provide constructive criticism, rave, ask questions, etc. Readers make this forum run! And our favorite readers are the fans who post in the AARs.

This is our own corner devoted to pointing out and honoring those deserving fans who we, as writers (or as fans -- takes one to know one!), appreciate!

One thing I will suggest as a thread tradition is for the winners to tell us about a particular AAR they find most interesting as a fan -- one that often prompts them to comment. Or more than one, for that matter... Fans are usually all over. Here's your chance to showcase some of your favorites, if you like.

...and, naturally, the tradition has always been for the winner of the award each week to pick his/her successor at the end of his week! Someone who has made a difference as a fan in your own AARs, or in general as a fan in the Forum.

There is a proud heritage in the Paradox writing forum (ref: above in 2004 when Backfire started this). It would be a shame to lose track of all those previously honored fans, so all the previous material is recorded on the old thread, here:

Bridging out into a new thread is in no way meant to lose touch with the old thread. It's the only way we could take advantage of Catknight's work in accumulating an index of winners, which I will now keep up. Backfire has left the forum, so we can't go back and fix the older thread. As a sort of fan-administrator, I hope to eventually improve things. Perhaps even adding links back to the old posts which honored each winner. In time...

Meanwhile, please do your part in adding vibrancy to this new thread!

Here is some elaboration on the rules for passing this on:

a) primary responsibility for keeping these awards moving rests with the awarder. If you haven't heard from your nominee by the following sunday, then its your responsibility (& pleasure) to pick again;
b) if the award goes missing for two weeks, one of the mods will post in the thread. This might indicate that it will be passed on asap. Lets face it we all take breaks from the forum and its unfair to deny someone a chance to pick their nominee just because they are exceptionally busy or taking a holiday;
c) on the other hand, this might indicate that the award is stuck. At that stage making a nomination for a new nominee is first come, first served. The proposals around voting are too difficult to manage in reality and the delight of all these awards is they are idiosyncratic, its what an individual llkes, not, as with the ACAs, what we as an AAR community like.

Okay, I feel better.

I've thought about who I'd nominate for this post. There are so many deserving people out there, and my AAR in particular happens to be blessed by so many consistent and interested readers that it feels wrong to pick someone. I feel like I made this speech before, but I mean it.

I've chosen someone who's followed my AAR from very early on, if not the very beginning. Someone who's stuck with me even when it became obvious my twists and turns had confused the hell out of him, and more importantly let me know so I could see what in my writing had thrown him off the scent.

An outstanding choice, CatKnight! jwolf always seems to make the time to keep well read even if he isn't writing an AAR himself at the time. This last fact I hope changes soon since it's been a while since we've seen a jwolf AAR, and I know I'd love to see a new one. Until then, congrats on the fan and thanks for being a great one.

Ah yes, a very dependable reader and commenter of AARs. In fact, so dependable is he, that I often use (abuse?) his latest posts as a kind of road map: if Jwolf left a message in one of the AARs I'm following myself, it's probably time to check in on a new update. Very useful, that.

Thanks to all for honoring me with this award, if ony for a week. Now where's that $1000 honorarium?

If any AARs have "confused the hell" out of me it's likely to be from following too many really good convoluted stories and getting them mixed up. Not to mention not being as young as I used to be, but let's not go there.

Stuyvesant, actually I often use the same technique on you, because we follow many of the same AARs!

Now I'll take advantage of my brief moment on the AAR soapbox to thank Paradox for providing this forum, and all our writers for participating so wonderfully! I had heard about EU and EU2, but it was reading a few AARs here that really sold me on the game. Here is an early AAR I liked a lot, even if it is quite short and no more than an annotated log:

Reading this gave me some idea of the enjoyment of this game -- even if your country isn't doing well, you can always get a good laugh out of the rest of the world. And in every game someone gets a good spanking.

I really enjoy some of the more complex stories being written here, with far more developed characters and intricate plots than I am able to create myself.

For all those writers whose work I don't read or comment on, just remember there is only so much one man can do. I don't mean any criticism by silence.

Now to all AAR writers: keep it up! I want to see more of my favorite stories!
