I think the possibility of a rivalry exists but I think it's more likely that the Ottomans would try to ally with the other Islamic power. Honestly, I don't think that Turkestan would try to claim the Sultanate since the Turks would be more likely to recognize the Ottoman claim. The Ottoman ruling class is Turkish after all, from the great migrations of the 1200s. I think the relationship between those two Islamic powers would be simlilar to that of the Ilkhanate and the Ottomans.

The Ilkhanate was a willing Ottoman vassal (meaning they offered their allegiance in return for the additional military security) in what's now the Crimea and the whole area north of it. They were originally the remnants of Genghis Khan's shamanistic mongolian ancestors, but converted to a mystical version of Sunni Islam, just like the Ottomans. That's also a big factor, I believe the Turks are Sunnis, which would make them more likely to ally with the Ottomans than if they were Shiites, like Iran.

Iran and the Ottomans never really allies; rather they were rivals like you were saying the Turkestans might be. A huge reason for this was that they were two different Islamic sects. This was was a source of constant tension between the two powers. Because that wouldn't be the case with Turkestan and the '36 Ottomans, I think they would get along pretty well, at least until their common enemy was humbled.

Actually, if the war with Ukraine and Russia ended early enough, a Turkestan, CTR, Ottoman war with Iran seems far more likely. The Shah of Iran and the Sultan of the OE were at war for much of history after the 1500s. But the land between them was always so hard to cross and the Iranians used slash and burn tactics to make the Ottomans afraid from getting too far into the country and then dying of thirst and starvation, that they never really made much headway. I think there are some possibilities there, but it's also kind of getting ahead of ourselves.

I think the hardest part is going to be finding the Tartar leaders for the CTR. Wikipedia might help though...

I like the idea of a Crimean nation springing up, though it might be hard to keep it alive as the Ottomans could only reinforce it by sea. Presumably some significant AI changes could be made though, so it should be possible. We'd also need to come up with a good peace treaty sequence as I think it might be going to too far to have either the Ukraine conquering all Anatolia or the Ottomans plunging into Central Russia.

I think that the need to boost the Ottomans at the start (and to change the current Sultan) has come up before. Good to know we were on the right track.

One other idea for the Ottomans that was introduced way back near the beginning, but not in much detail, was a possible Ottoman-Turkestan clash later on in the game. The idea behind it was that Turkestan would be claiming the title of Sultan (or was it Caliph?) itself once it had grown somewhat and this would lead to tensions and maybe war, with Persia stuck in the middle. What's your opinion on these ideas?

fancy that

It turns out there really was a Crimean independence movement in 1917-1918 but it was put down by the Russians. They had their own flag and everything!

Ismail Bey Gaspirali (1851-1914) was a renowned Crimean Tatar intellectual, whose efforts laid the foundation for the modernization of Muslim Tatar culture and the emergence of the Crimean Tatar national identity. The newspaper he published Tercuman /Perevodchik (1883-1914), functioned as a school through which a national consciousness and modern thinking emerged among the Tatars. His New Method (Usul-ü Cedid) schools, numbered 350 across the peninsula raised a new Tatar elite. This new elite, which included Noman Çelebicihan and Cafer Seydahmet proclaimed the first democratic republic in the Islamic world in 26 December 1917. However, this republic was short-lived and destroyed by the Bolsheviks in January 1918.

During Stalin's Great Purge, an entire generation of statesmen and intellectuals, such as Veli Ibraimov and Bekir Sıdkı Çobanzade (1893-1937), was destroyed on false charges.

I'm going to look up these names and a few others and they will probably form the leaders for the Head of State, Head of Gov't, etc... It certainly adds to the whole "historical plausability."

The only one I didn't find was a guy for the airforce. Some of these people were part of the Turkish government rather than Crimean but since first the Russians and then the Soviets butchered so many Tartars and forced them into mass exhile, it's not that surprising that it's hard to find prominent figures.

Speaking of which, I am creating an event series where the ottomans begin demanding territory from the arabic states, which eventually forms a sort of "arab league" to hamper ottoman expansion. It will probably culminate in war.

Accommodating GeneralHannible wishes, do you ;)

KaiserBenjamin, those ideas are very good. I think that the Tatar chaos could start in Ukraine about the same time as the socialists start grumbling, or maybe as a result of forced syndiclaist collectivization (which can happen as of now, too).

Though I wonder what happened to Sarmy...

So when do you think the event would fire? I was thinking after the Agricultural Crisis but before the whole Khruschev event series.

Also, I wouldn't mind getting involved in the actual coding. I took a Java class last year so I at least know the basics involved in coding in general.

event = {
id = ?
random = no
country = UKR
style = 0

trigger = {
#### if the event is triggered by a certain day rather than an occurrence, what does here?
}
name = "Tartar separatist movement"
desc = "Although the Russians were successful in putting down a Crimean Tartar independence movement during the Great War, a strong Tartar independence movement has continued since the creation of modern Ukraine. With the recent chaos in our government and the agricultural crisis, the Tartars in the Crimean region are threatening to succeed. This would stretch Ottoman influence dangerously close to our border, but the German officials have made it clear they have no interest in getting involved in a regional conflict. What’s our next move?”

OK, so then, before the different possibilities as represented by the action_a, action_b, etc... there's a picture= , and a date, and offset, and an end date.
What are all these? I'd love to help out directly if someone's willing to coach me through the process a little bit.

On a side note, is it possible for a country to start out the puppet of another country? I would also like, if at all possible, for the Germans to have an option to stay out of the war, so is it possible to remove Ukraine from the German alliance right before this event is triggered, or something like that? How would all that go down?

Use 'extend' or 'expand' rather than 'stretch' with regards to the influence. Stretching their influence has connotations that it would be a good thing for Ukraine... :) As stretching power means you're putting it under pressure.

I updated the Province file to give the Ottoman Empire some more IC. I spread out an addition 20 or so IC throughout something like a dozen provinces; places I thought Industry might develop. I tried running the game with the Shortcut to KaiserReich with the updated Target: "C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\HoI2.exe" Kaiserreich 0.3
and it worked with the updated Pronvince information.

However when I started the game normally with the Mod activated with the JSGME program, it used the old pronvincial info. Does anyone know why that is? And who should I email the updated Pronvince file to and what's their (your) email address?

or if you feel like inputting it manually, here is the updated pronvince data that needs to be inputted into the Province.csv file. Just replace the existing province text with this one. Just don't get the excel line and the province ID mixed up, they're two off.

What a coincedence this is... just a couple of weeks I suggested the same thing to Sarmatia via PMs. :eek: :D
This was what I came up with for ministers:
Head of State: Numan Celebicihan; Popular Figurehead
Head of Gouvernment: Veli Ibrahimov; Naive Optimist
Foreign Minister: Shevki Bektöre; Ideological Crusader
Armaments Minister: Cafer Seydahmet Kirimer; Military Entrepreneur
Minister of Security: Bekir Sidki Çobanzade; Man of the People
Minister of Intelligence: Ismail Otar; Political Specialist
Chief of Staff: Mustafa Kemal; School of Defence
Chief of Army: Mustafa Kemal; Static Defence Doctrine
Chief of Navy:
Chief of Air Force: Ahmet Khan Sultan; Air Superiority Doctrine

Let me explain why Mustafa Kemal is in there: after the victory in WW1 the Ottomans didn't gain any land, they only gained Russian Armenia as a puppet state, so the German Kaiser granted the Ottomans control over the Crimean Tatars as compensation. The Sultan then send Kemal to this new state to aid in it's development. Well I had a couple of ideas that Kemal would start a young turk revolution in Crimea in the hopes of creating a secular western/modern state (similar to what happened to Turkey IRL) with close ties to the Ottomans.

This is an interesting line to follow up on. I ran across a lot of very interesting reading while looking for pictures of Bekir Sidki Çobanzade. I was really amazed not to find any pics at all because their are dozens of websites with info about him and the purges of the Crimean Tartars. You can buy books of his poetry at Amazon, biographies of him, there are e-communities of Crimean Tartars with websites about him, but not one picture :(

no kidding, I had the exact same experience when I was looking for a picture.

I know CTR needs to be added with its official province list and all that. But just assuming that gets done, does this event look right?
