What is Kaiserreich?

Kaiserrech: Legacy of the Weltkrieg is an Ahistorical Modification to Hearts of Iron II: Armageddon that asks the question: "What if the Germans had won WWI?" The scenario starts in 1936, but there will also be battle scenarios in the next release. The Second American Civil War, the Kazahk-Turkmen War, the Spanish Civil War, The Second Arab Revolt, the Fourth Balkan War, the Austro-Magyar War and The Grand South American War to name a few.

I'm New to Kaiserreich, Which Country should I play?

If this is your first time and you want to get the feel of the game first, Russia is a good choice, especially if you've played All The Russias. Russia has little threats for the beginning of the game, and can be a fun game trying to reunite the Empire, take on the German Empire for control of Mitteleuropa or get even with Japan. Good choices would also be Britain, Mexico, Australasia, Bulgaria and Hungary.

Is Kaiserreich compattible with Armageddon?

Yes, Kaiserreich is compatible only with Armageddon 1.2-1.3b!

############
### How do I install Kaiserreich - Two Options!
############

A. Download JSGME and put it in your Armageddon folder. Then create a folder called MODS in your Armageddon folder and extract the Kaiserreich mod folder in the MODS-folder. Then open JSGME and the Kaiserreich mod should be visible in the white box on the left. Activate it using the arrow-button in the middle. Activation might take some time.

B. Extract your files into the Doomsday directory and voila you can play it! Please notice that by doing so you will overwrite all the vanilla files, so you have to reinstall it again. A better way is to firstly install Doomsday in a new directory say C:\Program Files\Kaiserreich and then extract Kaiserreich into it!

############
### A. Steps on Installation of Kaiserreich - Direct Extraction Option
############

1. Make a clean install of Hearts of Iron ARMA Version 1.2 or 1.3

2. Extract the main content of the Kaiserreich folder "Kaiserreich Version 1.1" into your HOI directory

3. Extract the music content of the Kaiserreich folder "Kaiserreich Version Music" into your HOI directory

4. Extract either Milites or KanaX Skins into the "gfx" folder - we recommend you extract both!! First KanaX Skins and after that Milites Skins!

############
### A. How do I uninstall Kaiserreich? - Direct Extraction Option
############

1. If you installed it over Vanilla then you must uninstall Hearts of Iron!

############
### B. Steps on Installation of Kaiserreich - JSGME Option
############

############
### B. How do I uninstall Kaiserreich? - JSGME Option
############

1. Open the JSGME and de-activate Kaiserreich 1.1. Your files will be the way they were before you activated Kaiserreich.

############
### Optional Downloads
############

The JGSME Optional Download is for the A.Installation! The Syndicalist Optional Download is for those who want to spread the glory of the worker state to the world!

Oh my god what have you done to Austria!!!!   Great mod you have there! I have some suggestion though.
Why not give portugese africa to the Freistaat Mittelafrika? Portugal was allied to the Uk in WWI.
Also turkey would never ever tolerate an armenian state near its border. maybe give armenia and azerbaijan to turkey and make georgien a puppet of them.
Why not creating a baltic state as yogi has done in his aar. This way it is more historical and you smooth out the border with belyorussia.
I think you should give nis to serbia.
Oh and you can create an alternate chaco War in south america, just look into wikipedia.

Well I think this is a very great mod! :D

Wow...this looks freaking great!

I'd love to see some polish resurgence events. Most likely if Germany is losing their war with France/Russia immensely Poland can reclaim their lost territories.

Also possibly add some events where France could become the first fascist/neo-Napoleon state with aims to control the whole of europe.

keep up the good work!

looooooking gooooooooood :)

 Yes, I better get on with answering this one!

The main rationale behind the whole Austro-Hungarian setup is to model the various competing national interests within each of the recognised sections of the Monarchy, and present a variety of possible alternatives to what could happen in this part of the world.

Now, the terms of the 1867 Ausgleich between Austria and Hungary stated that it would be renewed and renegotiated every ten years. Normally this tended to only focus on trade and internal tariffs, but before the First World War, things started to become a bit more tricky, with the Hungarians starting to demand things like a separate national army. Meanwhile of course, you have autonomy and regional diets being given to (and taken away from…) the various other historical regions of the monarchy.

Moving now into the alternate history section, the renegotiations in 1927 were very difficult, and needed German moderation. The Good Chancellor Tirpitz, more interested in promoting German interests overseas than a strong Austria in Europe, followed a divide and rule policy, keeping the Dualist structure, but ensuring that Croatia, Bohemia, Galicia-Lodomeria and Bosnia were given considerable autonomy within it.

So, what you have at the beginning of the scenario is a load of puppet relationships: Croatia is a puppet of Hungary, and Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia-Lodomeria, and Bosnia are puppets of Austria. So far, all horribly complex!

At the beginning of 1937, the next round of renegotiations will start. Germany is going to have problems of its own, so isn’t going to be that interested in getting involved in Austrian affairs this time around. All the various parts of the monarchy are going to want to clarify their exact status within (or outside) it. So, rather than having a single big Austro-Hungary in every game, there will instead be many many different possibilities for what could happen, all being resolved over the course of 1937. So, things could stay as they are, there could be a federation of nations (including Slovakia), or peaceful separation of the two parts, or a massive Hungary, or the reassertion of direct Austrian rule over the whole of the Empire, or the entire Danube basin could collapse into a gigantic civil war. So, all will (hopefully!) be kept more interesting and replayable!

:) Many thanks!

The general line with the border setup is that Germany has been the unquestioned dominant power in the world (in military, political and economic terms), for nearly twenty years. However, even the mighty German Reich wasn’t strong enough to rule directly everywhere, so its global order essentially consists of using German power to balance lots of competing national interests and claims, both within and outside of Europe. Hence most of the extra-European independent states have more territory, eg. Thailand has a lot Malaysia and Cambodia, Japan has Manchuria, and Ethiopia has a lot of East Africa. For itself, Germany is only directly ruling the very strategically important bits (Singapore, Suez, Kiaochow, Morocco, etc.), and is still very overstretched. So, once German hegemony starts unravelling, everyone is going to start moving in and asserting their ‘rightful’ lands and interests. And Germany is going to have to deal with this, as well as its own internal social and economic problems…

So, in light of this, the rest of the questions in order:

1) Portugal was fighting the war on the side of Britain, and so was allowed to retain its colonies as part of the Ten Point Programme. As the 1920s progressed, Germany gained a lot of economic and political interests in Iberia, so now it doesn’t want to start interfering in Portugal’s overseas Empire. However, Mittelafrika and South Africa would both like Angola and Mozambique. So, allowing Portugal to keep its colonies (at least at the beginning of the scenario!) provides a big opportunity for tension/conflict causing events, both within Africa and between Mittelafrika and Germany.

2) If I remember, Germany definitely wanted a reasonably large Lithuanian state after Brest-Litovsk, and backed a restoration of the Kingdom of Poland. So, there is a single 'Lettonie-Ostland' comprising the rest of the Baltic. Precise borders may need to be changed though...

3) Yes, definitely right about the Ottomans not being likely to tolerate an independent Armenia on its Eastern border. However, there are already events for it from 'All the Russias', and we don’t want to make the Turks too powerful!

Again, having a mess of independent states in the Caucasus, rather than a simple Turkish dominance, means more opportunity for war and conflict. I’m probably going to have to go the same direction as I did in ‘All the Russias’, and give Armenia a powerful foreign guarantor: probably either Hungary or the Italian Federation, or maybe Germany, if I can find a plausible reason as to why they would want an independent Armenia.

4) After the war, most of the blame was heaped upon Serbia by the victorious Central Powers, so it lost pretty much all of its territory. Therefore, Nis (and its large Serb population!) is likely to stay with Bulgaria. Needless to say though, Serbia is going to get the chance to reclaim it, and a lot of other territory (and the same goes for Greece and Romania).

5) Wars in South America would are of course very good, as this is a region which normally just sits out everything in vanilla HOI2! However, I’m more looking for interesting political/social setups in each of the countries – I know enough about European and Asian history to come up with (relatively – :) ) plausible setups there, using real life groups, but again, next to nothing about Latin America!

Syndicalist movements would be great (eg. were there any groups on the Spanish CNT in South America in this period?), as would radical political Catholicism for the Papal sphere...

Of course there will be Polish resurgence events – the last significant Polish insurrection was in 1905, so we’re now a bit overdue

The whole fascist issue is going to be a bit skewed in this timeline, as historically a lot of the ideology (and often membership) of early fascist movements came from revolutionary syndicalism (especially in France). So, the actual ‘Syndicalist’ ministers in each country are often going to be a mixture of vanilla Fascist and Communist ones.

A revolutionary-military dictatorship à la Napoleon would be quite a good idea, if I can find a plausible figure to lead it. Otherwise, an expansionist France is going to have a Noveau-Jacobin War of Social Liberation, with French volunteers again surging across the Rhine singing 'Ah ça ira, ça ira, ça ira...'

Ayeshteni

Socialist Scotland stuff would be very good! At the start, the Union of Britain is going to be constructed a bit like the Soviet Union, with separate Socialist Republics of England, Scotland and Wales united in a single structure. Given the long history of Scottish radicalism, Scots are going to be very active, possibly dominant, in the Union, so they should provide a lot of its ministers.

I’m also planning to have a TUC Conference some time in 1936, which is going to allow Britain to choose its path: one option of these would be a more decentralised setup, with an independent/puppet Scotland (and probably Wales too, but that would have to be constructed from scratch…).

And of course, Scottish separatists could provide an opportunity for the dastardly monarchist counter-revolutionaries/loyal British patriots holed in Canada under Edward VIII, to expand their influence back in the Mother-Country (and get away from those damnable syndicalist Quebecois…)

OMG
With the exception of a couple of minor things over Turkey, the setup looks perfect.
Still, consider Armenia (not even Azerbaijan).
Maybe split Armenia between Turkey and Azerbaijan, and make Georgia more insignificant (with an event series for the Armenians revolting after years of oppression).
Anyway, this mod has the perfect idea.
Rather than focus on one power resurging as it was historically, it focuses on many.
I say it's given a separate forum like the other major ones :D

Hmmm, a consensus seems to be developing on poor Armenia!

The Caucasian setup as it stands has been lifted from 'All the Russias,' where Armenia only managed to survive because it had Italian backing, and so developed into a fascist-style state. So, with no fascism here, and a stronger Turkey, it may be better to get rid of it!

Or possibly make it into an Ottoman puppet (if its almost certain to revolt as soon as Turkey runs into problems) to reflect a 'special administrative' zone within the Empire, along the lines of what I'm already doing for Tunisia, Egypt and Libya...?

Of the other two Caucasian states, I'm not sure how much needs to be changed: Azerbaijan is closely related to Turkey at the beginning, but then starts looking for a new protector a bit later on, when it realises everyone wants the Baku oil fields. In this setup, this would essentially be a choice of sticking with Turkey, or going with Germany, Austria, Hungary or Russia.

Georgia is quite big and powerful because it's filled the power vacuum in the North Caucasus, and is run by an extremist Menshevik clique proposing a special brand of 'Caucasian Socialism' (as devised by Lavrenty Beria...). Hmmm, just realised this means it will be aligned with France...

serbia and montrego were both annexed by the central powers before wars end

I don't think there was every a peace-treaty or any formal annexation of Serbia and Montenegro - I think they were both just occupied in the latter part of the war, with their precise post war status to formalised afterwards.

So, Serbia has been punished severely, but not destroyed, while Montenegro has been annexed into the Croatian part of the Habsburg territories.

Not German but can read it - !!

Please send, any research like this is useful (although Poland is being included - see below...)

Afsin said:
Sarmatia, will this be a completely new project or wil you be combining it with your 'All the Russia's' mod?

Well it's going to include pretty much everything from 'All the Russias' (although some of it is obviously going to need to be changed), and the two will now be developed along-side one another.

***

Also, just been doing some hunting around Wikipedia (totally unreliable for real historical research, but indispensible for the obscure and generally pointless information you need for alternate histories!), and have managed to recreate the list of monarchs for the Eastern principalities.

So, to clear things up, we now have:

LAT (Dark Orange) - Vereinigtes Baltisches Herzogtum (United Baltic Duchy) under Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Apparently to be included in the German Reich in a similar manner to Bavaria, Saxony and the other federal states, but I’d reckon its better to keep it as a puppet, to stop Germany from beng too massive, and to reflect it having a high degree of autonomy.

LIT (Light Orange) – Kingdom of Lithuania under Mindaugas II (né Wilhelm Karl Florestan Gero Crescentius Duke von Urach, Count von Württemberg) – he actually died in 1926, and his legitmate heir was his son, also called Wilhelm, so probably Mindaugas III…

And, Finland got Prince Frederick of Hesse to be its King, who apparently reigned under the title of Väinö I.

Now, both Belarus (BLR) and Ukraine (UKR) had German backed ‘National Republics’ after Brest-Litovsk, with Ukraine being taken over by a Hetmanate. However, I’m guessing that in this sort of timeline Republicanism of any sort isn’t going to be a viable long-term option in the German-sphere of influence, and so they’d follow the general tradition of new states and get some sort of Germanic monarch. So, I’d suppose that the Kaiser’s brother Heinrich is going to need something to do, so he could get one, and another can go to a Habsburg, to keep them on side. So…

BLR (Light Grey) – Kingdom of Belarus, under Heinrich I of Hohernzollern (probably should Russify ‘Heinrich’ like his Finnish and Lithuanian counterparts, but I’m not sure what the Belarussian equivalent would be!)

UKR (Brown) – Kingdom / Grand Duchy of Ukraine under a suitable Habsburg, again, with a Ukraine-ified name…

POL (Beige) – Kingdom of Poland – actually re-established by the Germans in 1916, and governed by a three-man regency. Might be best to keep this regency in place permanently, a bit like Hungary in real life? That way, the election of a Polish monarch can supply some events, and start the ball rolling for a true recreation of the Commonwealth!

I’m sure there are likely to be some errors with these, so please point them out!

***

In addition, if anyone has done (or wants to do!) any related work, coding or graphics on anything relevant to what's outlined above, please send it! Likewise, if anyone has any further good ideas on what to add to it.

This is, as can be seen, a big project, and help would be very gratefully appreciated - and also of course means that the thing will be out and playable sooner!

@ Sarnatia:

I meant they did NOT want poland, forgot the not ^^

i'll have a look tomorrow and i'll post it here!

So, Serbia has been punished severely, but not destroyed, while Montenegro has been annexed into the Croatian part of the Habsburg territories.
Makes for a great rise of Serbia (and perhaps establishment of Yugoslavia?) event series.
BLR (Light Grey) – Kingdom of Belarus, under Heinrich I of Hohernzollern (probably should Russify ‘Heinrich’ like his Finnish and Lithuanian counterparts, but I’m not sure what the Belarussian equivalent would be!)
In Russian there is no equivalent for Frederick, but if anything it's spelled Fridrikh (Фридрих)
Also, what is that country just south of Poland? (the one with the small border with Germany)
Also, what's up with the far eastern republic? (Kolchak's in All the Russias)
If a coalition of white politicians won, wouldn't there be one Russia?
Unless of course Kolchak is a Russian puppet who rebels after one event or another (or is left as a Japanese puppet like in the first one)

Oh, this has been an interesting thread of late. Sorry to have not been contributing much, but European royal families are not my historical strength!

I have enjoyed reading these posts. Sorry the skins have been slowing down, but I have been doing some for Allenby's 1914 mod and for the GIP. I will make some more for this mod soon. In the meantime I have also been compiling all my graphics into one website which you can get to through my signature. I will be adding a flag/shield page soon, and adding more counters to the counter page as well

Are you going to do this with all monarchs?

And does that mean Gustav V will be H. Maj:t?

Ideally yes, both for the sake of consistency and because in this timeline Monarchs are going to demand to be treated with proper and due respect!

So, is 'H. Maj:t' the correct term of address for Swedish Monarchs?

Well he wouldn't have as much as influence as he did in real history, since he created a crisis with Austria and Germany in order to escape being put under their control. That left Sikorski as the main organiser for recruitment and army creation(besides German generals) in Kingdom of Poland. Till 1918 Pilsudski and the rest of soldiers that were with him were either garrisoned or imprisoned(he was imprisoned). He was given freedom only when the Central Powers were on the very edge of defeat. In this history I believe he would be left free a couple of years after the war, and become a politician advocating unification of Poland with Galicia and Lithuania. But he neverthless doesn't live till 1936.
The main military role I believe would in time be given to Sikorski from German officials.
Oh and btw.You confused Regency Council with Government of Kingdom of Poland, the Regency Council was an advisory body that appointed Prime Minister who then appointed ministers, there wasn't a ministry of war and foreign affairs as during the war this was controlled officialy by the Germans, but their were departaments that had similiar function. Depertament for Political Affairs was responsible for foreign contacts and Poles beyond the puppet Kingdom of Poland(and the question of Eastern Polish territories such as Vilnius, territories of Greater Poland-that is Poznan, and of course West Galicia and Silesia-all of which were important for the cause of Polish independence), while there were also people responsible for recruitment and organisation of Polish Armed Forces(Polnische Wehrmacht)-Pilsudski had a place reserved for him but it was no longer possible after Oath Crisis.Throughout this period the person most involved with the military was Sikorski who led the recruitment and formation of military units with Austrian and German officials.
Regency Council consisted only of three people-coming from conservative circles of nobility.

Ah thanks - I'm in the process of converting all your ministers into the game files, and will show them here once its done. Instead of using "Cipher Bureau 1" as the Minister of Intelligence (would be better as a tech-team, I'd think...) I've put in Marian Rejewski, the Pole who was in charge of the team who cracked the Enigma code, who was apparently fairly high up in the real cipher bureau. Does this sound reasonable?

Also, what would be Janusz Radziwill's trait as Foreign Minister, and what would Archbishop Kakowski be as a potential Head of State and Head of Government?

And could it be possible that in the intervening time, Pilsudski was in control of the main opposition to this conservative government? I'd imagine some sort of coalition of nationalist and socialist groups would be quite likely to develop (particularly without any sort of Bolshevik threat driving a wedge between them), and he'd be the obvious leader (while he was still alive of course...).

Looks like a good idea, but I would rather than Britain stayed neutral than the USA and Britain signing a kind of white peace... Britain's habit in wars where a power dominates a continent isn't usually to make make. We fight on indefinately from our island protected by the Royal Navy. Just something to consider when looking at the realism of the mod... I don't know if Britain would have signed that peace agreement? Also popular sentiment for the Reds was not high in Britain, I doubt that the army would have joined strikers- the police cavalry are used for that role anyway and we have a lonh history of doing such things. Revolution here in Britain seems a distant thought.

Mmmm, while I'm sure British military planners, particularly at the beginning of the war, would have thought that fighting on indefinitely might have been a good idea, as a generally felt opinion this may have waned a bit after six years of very costly fighting, with the main results being: British troops driven from the Continent; severe troubles in Ireland, and unrest threatening to take over many of the colonies (particularly India); all the major Entente powers knocked out of the war (with the USA never joining the war in the first place); continuous U-Boat attacks on merchant shipping; a population in the Home Islands getting increasingly fed up of a war which seemed already lost and fought for no real purpose (plus the examples in France and Russia of disastrous revolutions caused by a mishandling of said population); and very severe economic problems bought on by the cost of funding another two years of fighting.

As such, it's not really that implausible to see some form of influential cross-party 'Peace Faction' emerging, particularly if seemingly generous and concilatory terms were offered - and if the alternative seemed to be losing much of the Empire to internal dissent. And it wouldn't really be that unprecedented - there's a rough parallel in the 1802 Peace of Amiens with Napoleonic France.

Regarding possible British Revolutions, I think that ideas of Britain's immunity to political radicalism or revolutionary ideology is a bit overstated. If you look at the history of labour relations in the immediate pre-WWI period, you do actually see a quite strong syndicalist influence, with a very high level of strike activity and a rising current of Guild Socialism - which only the war, and (more importantly) the succesful Bolshevik revolution managed to kill off. In this timeline, Bolshevism is an abject failure, and so these more native socialist and revolutionary currents can come to the fore.

Plus (and perhaps more importantly!) you have an already shaken ruling class, a rank-and-file military which feels completely alienated from the current leadership, plus a significant number of demobbed men, with no immediate prospects in the economically exhausted homeland. So Britain really does become a powder-keg, simply due to domestic forces - no need for dastardly French agitators or Germans bringing in weapons to the IRA in U-boats!

Seen your website already - looks great (and I was actually wondering where the flag and shield section was - ) - Don't worry about the skins - they're not an immediate priority!

Taken from the edit of that one post:

EDIT: Perhaps Germany could have some event where they banish those embrassing people like a certain military man and his trusty wife into their new african penal colony?

Also, perhaps that german man who helped nat. chi in real history could work in AOG? I can't remember his name...

Ideally yes, both for the sake of consistency and because in this timeline Monarchs are going to demand to be treated with proper and due respect!

So, is 'H. Maj:t' the correct term of address for Swedish Monarchs?

The Order of Succession mentions "Hans Kungl. Maj:t" ("His Royal Majesty") It's sometimes shorted to just H. Kungl. Maj:t or Just H. Maj:t....
"Hans Kungliga Höghet" ("His Royal Highness") is used for members of the royal family who are not actually reigning monarchs (princes, princesses, etc. etc.)
