    Carthago Nova

Carthago Nova! The place for an aspiring Eutopian politician to see and be seen in the political district of Eutopia City. Sitting cattycorner to the General Assembly building, the famously upscale restaurant and bar started its life as Eutopia City's Freemason lodge when the city was first established. In the early decades of the 1900s it became Eutopia's first gold exchange, and during the Second World War served as a bomb shelter for the Estates-General. After the war it was bought up by a wealthy ex-politico and turned into the premier watering and feeding hole for lobbyists and politicians alike. In the shadowed booths, agreements are made, laws hammered out, and fates decided...

These days, representatives of the following lobbying groups can regularly be found here:

Armed Forces Serviceman's Fund (AFSF) -- Interests: Improved living conditions for active-duty servicemen, pensions and healthcare for veterans.

Defenders of the Eutopian Environment (DEE) -- Interests: Environmental protection and regulation, endangered species, fisheries.

Eutopian Business Association (EBA) -- Interests: Protecting business, increasing profits, keeping wages and regulations on business in check.

Eutopian Civil Liberties Union (ECLU) -- Interests: Civil liberties, free speech, democratic government.

Eutopian Congress of Labor (ECL) -- Interests: Labor rights, wages, worker's insurance, working/living conditions.

Eutopian Firearms Association (EFA) -- Interests: Reduced strictures on gun ownership, exceptions to the criminal code for using firearms in defense of property or person.

Eutopian Homosexual Association (EHA) -- Interests: Gay rights, gay marriage, right to adopt for homosexual couples, hate crimes legislation.

Royal Foundation (RF) -- Interests: Official recognition of the monarchy, increase in the monarchy's power, protection of the monarchy's property.

Society for Good Governance (SGG) -- Interests: Good governance issues, greater transparency and accountability in government.

Soldiers of God (SoG) -- Interests: Encouraging governmental recognition of and support for religion, anti-abortion, anti-homosexual rights.

(OOC: This thread is a place for Eutopia's politicians to contact representatives of special interest groups, and attempt to secure their support, be it for specific pieces of legislation or during an election. The role of interest groups is described in Rule 38 of the FAQ; the ten groups listed above are the most powerful in Eutopia, and will help to decide elections. Other, smaller groups, such as those that might occasionally appear in the von Streusser Report, can also be contacted here.

Remember -- special interests want to be solicited. They want to know what you're going to do for them. Woe betide those who count on their support without working for it!)

Former President Al'Aeshir walks in and heads straight to the table where some of the DEE bigwigs are assembled.

"Good afternoon," Amric nods," I'm Amric Al'Aeshir, founder of the Eutopian Society for the Environment. I understand you folks have taken over that torch. I would like to speak to you about the various needs that you see that MUST be addressed regarding the environment."

Former GA member walks to the ECLU offices, and meets with their head:

"Hello, my fine Per. As you know, there's a new constitution coming afoot. What would you propose I propose, if you get what I am saying? Are you for a trial by jury?"

The DEE lobbyists look surprised. "Ah, Per President, it is a pleasure to see you back on your home soil. Your presence alone gives us great hope for our cause.

I think you will agree that, as crucial as oil is, drilling it without regards for the environment invites disaster. There must be some environmental controls and regulations, and soon, before the American oil companies are deeply entrenched."

The ECLU attorneys gathered at Carthago shuffle over to make space for von Hapsburg at their table. "Welcome back, Minister. Right to business, eh? Well, certainly, we consider the right to a jury trial to be crucial to guaranteeing that the rights of the accused are vindicated. We feel the same way about most of the Eutopian Charter of Rights, in fact."

Herrera walks boldly into the restaurant, looking for the table where he was told the ECLU leadership frequently sat. He adjusted his lengthy brown sweater and stroking his bushy beard.

"I wish to speak with whomever is in charge of your organization. If you are truly bent on protecting individual liberties, now is the time. Maximum freedoms with minimal institutions is the best course to bolster personal liberties. You cannot rely on upon reform from above. It is the people alone that must secure their freedoms, and the Convention is the best opportunity. I would ask what the programs of the ECLU are and if you have plans ready to go soon."

Ian smith meets people from SoG.

"Good day to you gentlemen, allow me to present myself. My name is Ian Smith. You may or might not know me, but my current ambition is to shape eutopia's government to the likings of God. It's not an easy task and it is being constantly sabotaged yet I remain faithful towards your...no...OUR cause. Should you ever want to contact me please don't hesitate to do so. Believe me that I highly value your opinions and by God I will make sure that they will be considered carefully on every single political meeting."

    Amric sits down.

"I agree. In fact I mentioned just that in a speech in Farpoint just a couple of days ago. I am going to be pushing for adding safeguards for the environment in the new constitution. Either that or legislation. Something MUST be done. I agree oil is important, but it can be done in an environmentally safe manner as well.

So what else do you think should be addressed? I'm planning on being a real pest about the environment until I get what I want. You all know my reputation. I get things done."

Alexi Gonzov strolls into Carthago Nova and sits down at the Eutopian Congress of Labour table

    Good evening Comrades.

I have recently started the first Political Party since the death of Leverage, the New Socialist Party of Eutopia, I look forward to working closely with the ECL, and would like to enquire about what issues the Trade Unions are concerned about.

Colonel Bradstreet had a very interesting day ahead of him. Before he could meet at the Convention Hall, Bradstreet had a couple of meetings with some of Eutopia's more influential groups. Bradstreet spotted the Armed Forces Servicemen's Fund, the first group on his list of three. He stood behind the group of men, extended his hand to each member and said blankly to them all,

Good Afternoon Gentlemen. I am Colonel Harrison William Bradstreet, President of Bradstreet & Pierce Enterprizes, but more importantly, member of the Constitutional Convention and former Army Officer myself. I know your pains and had to endure them myself. I come here today for one simple reason, I will support your entire platform in the Convention Proceedings, and into the political scene. I hope we may work well together.

Bradstreet looks every one of them in the eye, in an attempt to connect with them.

Sir Edmund Mycroft strolls into the building, and glances at his watch. He has a bit of spare time before he has to show his face at thi Constitutional Convention. He decides to stop in at the Serviceman's Fund first. He sees Bradstreet and gives a greeting, and then says to the gentlemen at the Fund stand, "Good day, my good friends. As you may know, I am formerly of the Navy, and I am here on roughly the same grounds as the Colonel. I would be interested in hearing about your specific agenda and seeing if there is anything I can do to help you."

He thinks to himself that he will probably have to go straight to the Convention after talking with the representatives, but, one supposes, that convention couldn't take ALL day. He will have time to scope out the other organisations later.

  12. #12
Crampton pays his first visit, he spots some fellow convention members talking with a group who do not appear to be strangers to a knife and fork, nor to a bottle..

"Good evening gentlemen! Is this the gourmet club by chance? What do you recommend?" he asks whilst sitting down at the AFSF table and picking up a menu.

Stile van Ewen, still getting used to her new role working for the Eutopian Civil Liberties Union, shakes Herrera's hand. "Señor Herrera, a pleasure. As you know, we of the ECLU support civil liberties, most particularly those protected by the Eutopian Charter of Rights. Of course, the first order of business is to see that the same rights are protected in the new constitution. Then, areas where personal rights may be expanded should be considered."

"Praise the Lord!" cries Kurt Wagster, leader of the Soldiers of God. "It brings joy to my heart to see that God smiles on those who would do his work. Bless you and your doings, Mr. Smith."

"We're interested to hear your ideas, Per President," responds the DEE representative.

    * * *

"Welcome, Comrade Gonzov. The unions are concerned about the same things the unions are always concerned about -- fair pay, health care, insurance, safety, worker's comp, and keeping our constituents employed."

    * * *

The retired Brigadier commanding the AFSF table gives Crampton a dirty look. "I hear the martinis are quite good here -- at the bar," he says pointedly.

He then turns to Bradstreet and Mycroft. "Gentlemen, our interests are in seeing our fighting men and women get the treatment and respect they deserve. I won't lie to you, General Levarge was good for us. But we need to keep pay up, keep training up, keep safety up, and guarantee that we have comfortable pensions, medical services, and educational opportunities for our veterans."

(OOC: Whew! Folks, a little clarification -- the interests of the special interest groups are up top, and if you ask them what they're interested in, they're probably just going to keep parroting that stuff. If you're hunting for their political support, make 'em an offer. )

Bradstreet looks at Mycroft, and returns the polite nod. As he is about to speak, Bradstreet is interupted by Crampton. After he leaves, Colonel Bradstreet is seated at the table. He refuses the menu, and gest down to the point.

As a former military man, I understand the hardships of a soldier. In return for political support, I promise to become the AFSF standard bearer, increasing pay, keeping bases open, whatever I can do for you, you name it.

A sly smile creeps across the Colonel's face.

Von Hapsburg speaks to the ECLU representative:

"I seek your opinion on a constitutional monarchy, and if there are any other special interest groups wishing the same thing. I would also advocate the right to privacy, and the freedom to peacably assemble."

"I appreciate the offer, Colonel, but there are many former military men who have taken an active interest in politics, and it would not be in our best interests to hang our hopes on any one just yet." The Brigadier clears his throat. "But tell me, exactly what do you propose to do for us?"

    * * *

Van Ewen shares a glance with her comrades. "The ECLU is not a supporter of the monarchy, Per von Hapsburg. A monarch can only serve to restrict the ability of the people to determine for themselves how they choose to be ruled, which is the basis of all other rights and freedoms we enjoy.

"As for the other things you mentioned -- well, I imagine everyone will favor the right to peaceably assemble after the Levarge years. But tell me, what do you consider the limits of the right to privacy?"

Mycroft listens to the Brigadier. He thinks for a moment while Colonel Bradstreet talks.

"Now, when I was a young man in college, they had the reserve officer programs, and I think I did fairly well with that when I was preparing to join the Navy. Can you tell me a bit about how that is working now? Has it changed at all for the worse?

How are conditions on the ships these days? As you said, Levarge has been good to you, but I was in the Navy before he came to power. Some of the men on my ship were complaining about how they weren't serving their country to have awful food and no leave during peace. I personally got leave, but it was a bit short, and I don't know if it was over the heads of lower ranking men and women who had been serving longer than I had."

Amric looks at the assembled DEE people.

"Clean water and clean air. I've spoken about this on many occasions. This is something that needs to be dealt with, and soon. My Eutopia Energy is the only energy concern that is 100% pollution free. Now I know standard energy companies can't do that, but it IS possible to reduce emissions into the air by more than 75% of current standards. The emissions controls are laughable and are in desperate need of updating. Perhaps some government assistance might be needed to get them up to a viable and sustainable new emissions standard. For those who refuse to comply VERY stiff fines and shutting down of the facility until it CAN be fixed properly might do the trick.

Let us not forget the water. People and companies have a very bad habit of dumping chemicals and whatnot into our waterways. This has to stop. With extremely stiff fines as well as massive penalties for those companies that willfully continue to dump wastes into our waterways. It can be prevented, it is only that nobody has really tried hard to do so.

Air and water are two of the necessary and essential things all of us need! But we also need to protect our oceans from dumping as well. For the ocean is the womb that helps to enclose and protect Eutopia. It MUST be protected, not just from drilling rigs leaking oil and natural gas, but from those who would dump toxic wastes and chemicals and who knows what else? My proposal for this is something AAH has been working on for years. A new process, I'm sure you read about it in the newslink some years ago....To destroy such wastes without producing more pollutants. It is close to time to break ground on the facility. The concept has been proven and AAH is ready to begin work. This would help the dumping issue as well as other waste materials that are difficult or dangerous to store. For those who DO dump in our ocean, massive fines and confiscation of the boats/ships that were involved. Perhaps after repeated dumpings some jail time might serve as well."

Amric smiled gently,"That is just a beginning of my ideas. I've always had some difficulty getting them across to the people, other than recycling that is, and to my fellow politicians. But with the right backing I believe I might be listened to a little more warmly."

At a different point in time to the DEE discussions

Former President Al'Aeshir approachese the ECLU party at their table.

"Good evening. I'm Amric Al'Aeshir. I'd like to hear some of your views on how we can improve the Eutopian citizens civil liberties. I've heard a variety of ideas, including anarchy. But I am interested in something that will not only guarantee an individual's civil liberties, or a groups, but also protect them from persecution as well. But to be tempered in such a way as to NOT infringe on other people's civil liberties as well.

I was hoping you might have some ideas on this subject. I've racked my brain, but in the end too much liberty brings about anarchy, while too little brings forth totalitariansim. Somewhere there must be a happy medium. But I am having a little trouble grasping how to get to that point."
