WunderWaffen

As always with these things it was a dark and stormy night. it just wouldn't have been right to plot something like this on a jolly summer day as butterflies flew past. No.

Those gathered were the top men behind the great german industrial conglomerates. All the men who wanted to pick up where Hugo Stinnes left off, Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, the steel magnate, and Dr Bosch, head of I.G. Farben. Of course many from the Vorstand of IG were there. Bosch spoke up to the men who were gathered.

"Without the support of the IG and the rest of the German monopolies and cartels, Hitler could not have won his polical fight. And the just as he needed us, we needed him, his government has channeled new money into out cartels and trusts, made sure that we get the government contract. His eradication of the once growing threat of unionization was a godsend, but all is not well. I agree with Hitler that Germany has a place of greatness reserved for her in Europe, But Hitler plans to win military victories the same way as they have always been won. With military men and guns. This is all well since it will be we who will be selling the guns, the gas and the tanks (laughter) BUT! We must be able to consolidate the gains we make in times of war. For every soldier on the field there is one worker less in the factory and once consumer less on the market. Therefore I have deviced a plan. Of course we must have an army proper, otherways our friends in rheinmetal and seimens would be ruined (roar of laughter from the sad remains of what was once called the trust to end all trusts) but we will not try to defeat our enemies by outdying them. We will defeat them with our superior industry and our expensive WunderWaffen."

What was this? "WunderWaffen" had Carl lost it completely?

"With WunderWaffen I refer to weapons of high techology unknown to our enemies. Specifically those who require few men to handle, but many to produce. We have already contacted men in the military who will be of assistance to us in the development of these weapons. However this will take time, and our fuhrer is not a very patient man. Therefore we have the liberty of introducing Herr Hitler to Albert Hoffmans new discovery. It has turned out to make him quite docile. From now on he does what we tell him(gasp)"

Building wonderweapons isn't an easy task the first four years we're spent upgrading germanys industry, in february 1940 production of rocket sites began, tree were started with the goal of making 8 test sites. Nuclear technology was also pursued. When 1941 ended two nuclear reactors were
completed and a third was underway.

Of course some military expansionism on the fuhrers side was allowed for, the anschluss whent ahead as planned, and the treaty of munich was signed and broken all in good order (while the slovaks had to learn hungarian).

IG and Siemens decided that the rapallo treaty was all that was needed, so no agreement was signed with the soviets regarding poland and the baltic stats. When the showdown over Danzig closed in the fuhrer was given an extra strong dosage to keep him from doing anything stupid. Germany had backed down at the last minute.

When germany laid off poland the france allowed germany to annex luemburg on the 30th october 1940. Yugoslavia followed the same path on the 16 of july 41' and romania became a part of germany on the 26 january 1942'.

Germany had finally started building some troops, 100 divisions of mountaineering troops were to form the backbone of the new army. A handful of ultramodern tanks, but most importantly, 12 modern carriers, escorted by 12 cruisers and 12 destroyers. The first real WunderWaffen came rolling out of the factories in early 43'. The Turbojet Naval Bomber. The Turbojet CAS was also researched but not yet completed when germany attacked and annexed switzerland. Switzerland gave a good fight but was annexed on the 8th of may 1943. Lack of supervision gave Hitler an oportunity and in his pyjamas he declared war on poland on the 20th of june 43', this was ahead of the industrialists plans, but it would have to do. the surprise resulted in three divisions encircled and destoyed in eastern prussia. But apart from that poland was smacked without a fight in two weeks flat. Hungary had earlier been given Novi Sad and part of Romania, as a reward for entering an alliance with germany, but just sat and watched during the polish wars. In the case of any more east front fighting Hungarys military would be under german military control.

Germany before the war

With Poland down France seemed to be a pushover, since the franco-swiss border lacked fortifications. But on the 5th of august 43' disaster struck. The Soviets declared war.

The german focus on waiting and building WunderWaffens had left their military vulnerable. Especially since a considerable part of the army was still in France fighting the good fight.

The Soviet divisions outnumber the german 3 to 1. It looks kind of bleak on the eastern front if it wasn't for a small detail. On the 14th of january 1944. the 6th nuclear reactor will be done. This means that the first nuclear bomb will be available shortly after.

Will the WuWa triumph over the red hordes? Stay tuned!

ps. it's late, I'm tired, more screenies tomorrow.

Great one. Nice AAR.

I like this story, although I thought it got kind of "gamey" when you got away with annexing Yugoslavia and Romania.

We'll Hitler was pretty gamey too, getting away with annexing austria and the checz. They were attacked since the industrialists wanted a war with soviet russia without a war with the allies. They had counted on soviet agression on the eastern front, but that never happened so they had to open a russian front of their own. In retrospect this was just stupid since it increased my bellingerence with catastrophic effects. The second objective was to help my designated ally hungary out. giving them their national provinces, and having something nice to give to italy. Giving the provinces to italy as I later did was just stupid since it robbed me of my meditteranean ports. But gives an explanation for them to join my alliance. (actually they declared war on the soviet union directly after I was attacked.)

Go the super-tech capitalist hegemony! May monoplies reign over all the earth!

I like this alot!

Do I understand correctly that you attacked and annexed Lux, Yugo, Romania?

Yes. With one year intervals, for the classic, "But THIS TIME mr. Hitler is satisfied."

As always in war, some things go your way, and some don't. The soviet declaration of war was one of those things that is firmly rooted in the second category. But the effects were not that clear cut.

There is always the question of what it takes to make a person or a country take radical actions. For the Sionists it was the Dreyfus affair, for the Athenians it was the prospect of invasion. The soviet declaration of war showed the german military-industrial complex that it would have to strike swiftly if the game was to be won.

The German navy had previously been divided into three parts each one consisting of four carriers, four cruisers and four destroyers. These had been prowling the english coast trying to pick fights, in this fashion most of the british carrier fleet had been sunk, but british naval bombers had turned the tide on this strategy, so the Army and the Navy (under the benign supervision of the IG Vorstand of course) devised a daring plan. The entire german navy was to camp of the coast of sunderland protecting a transport fleet. On the first of october 1944 a group of three alpenjäger divisions would land in sunderland and fight of the local garrison. When they had captured the port three more divisions would land. then the carriers would escort the troop transports back to kiel Wilhelmsrafe where they would get six more divisions. (At this time troop transports was a very limited resource, operation seelöwe had originaly been planed for a much later date).

There was another side to this of course. When at war with the soviet union and the Rapallo treaty dead and buried german access to certain rare materials was extremely constricted. The english stockpiles of rubber and rares was a tempting target. Besides, if the strike wasn't carried out now, the resources to carry it out wouldn't be available later.

The attack was a success, though the Kriegsmarine lost three Carriers The landings went as planned an the british isles slowly began to fall.

On the 24th of October the USA declared war on Germany. The only country in the world with an industry greater than Germany. This ment that germany was now outmanned on the battlefield, outgunned on the seas and outflown in the skies.

When the snow started falling germanys luck in the east started to change. A series of well planned winter-offensives pushed the Commies back, the amphibious capture of leningrad foreced the ruskies to race north with troops badly needed in the south. For a moment romania had looked like a lost cause, but the Soviets risked having their army cut in two.

The deep red is the mark of furtherest ever soviet advancement, green is pre-sovietwar borders.

By now England had fallen, and all that remained were an american intervention force on the northwesternmost islands off the scottish coast.

On january the 20th the army decided, in an illadvised attempt at helping out their italian allies, to invade spain with the goal of capturing gibraltar. The result however was disasterous. the 24 divisions got bogged down and the fighting in mountainous terrain took a heavy toll on manpower. furthermore new divisions had to be sent there rather than to the eastern front.

On the 6th of march germany had driven the soviets back to the prewar borders on all fronts save the northesternmost part of poland. Despite a staggering inferiority in numbers Vorstand decided that it was time to deploy the ultimate WunderWaffen. The Schwarzgerät. Captain Weissman was in charge of the deployment of the weapon. All german rockets had a serial number and were refered to, by their number. This particular rocket had never been given a number, (well officially it's designation was S-Gerät 11/00000) since it's purpose defied serialization. This was the ultimate instrument of death. In fact merely the rumours of it had spawned a cult around it among some of the Herero survivors from the 1907 massacre who hailed it as the god of death.

The army had discussed where the S-Gerät should be put to use, every province bordering against germany contained 25-40 divisions. To use it against the thickest troop concentration had been the wehrmachts first idea. But the Vorstand Insisted that the use of the weapon against kiev as a tactical maneuver would be the most profitable. A strike against Kiev would split the Soviet front in two parts, after that one army would attack north of kiev to prevent the northern soviet armies from coming to the rescue. the troops that had taken kiew would support The southern part of the german-hungarian army that was to sweep forward and take the south robbing the soviets of some of their best coal mines. Perhaps the attack could even reach stalino and sevastopol or encircle and destroy some parts of the Soviet army, but that was uncertain.

Around 7 o'clock local time Captain Weissman, der Blicker (latinized to Blicero) gave the order for the Schwarzgerät to be launched from the airfield at Iasi. The rocket soared through the sky towards it's target. When it reached Brennschluss german troops were watching in anticipation and Conrad Zeuss and Heisenberg were praying that their calculations were right and that earths athmosphere wouldn't be incinerated.

a quarter past 10 the S-Gerät 11/00000 detonated 500 meters above central Kiev. The destruction was massive. A Blaze as of a thousand suns lit the sky, literally making people blind. The heat incinerated people and buildings alike for miles, and seconds later came the blast that flattened several square miles of central kiev, literally making people deaf. Even if the Blast didn't destroy everything it badly damaged buildings far away. The fire lived a life of it's own and caught on in the rubble, the people turned to the Dniepr for water, but electricity was gone an much was damaged. it was futile trying to put out the fires. People were fleeing the fires or just walking around in chock when the first german soldiers arrived at the city. The Soviet military had been busy trying to put out the fires, salvage equipment and figuring out who was alive and who was dead. Perhaps the greatestdifficulty in the hours after the catastrophy was not knowing. Not knowing who was alive and who was dead, carrying your wounded friend to a hospital just to find out that the hospital was in worse shape than your friend was. Fights breaking out between soldiers trying to figure out their new position in a chain of command lacking essential links. Political comisars trying to straighten out fights over resources with draconian measures and people pretending to be comisars to get hold of the very same resources. Besides nothing worked. Not the telephones, not the radio, not anything. The Population of the city surrendered to the Wehrmacht, since this matter is still covered by war time secrecy we can only guess at the casualties, most observers estimate between 200 000 and 400 000 dead. The german military gained the bruning pile of rubble that once had been the 1500 year old city of Kiev, and of course, the tactical advantage in the region.

The observant reader may have noticed that a few of the people and phenomens of the book gravity's rainbow have found their way into my AAR, since some of the people in the book are my favorites I decided to let them out and have a go with a germany with a more sucessfull wunderwaffen project.

Well, I hope the WuWas can continue to surprise, though the nuke pretty much is the best card in the WuWa deck. But perhaps Weissman of Bleicheröde has more cards up his sleeve.

The plan to separate the soviet forces with the nuclear strike on kiev worked like a charm. In early april german troops had broken the soviet southern defensive line. Taking hundreds of thousands soviet prisoners.

The new goal was to capture the crimean peninsula andonce and for all defeat the black sea navy to enable amphibious landings in caucasus. Panzer spearhead divisions were assembled with the objective of making a strike deep inside soviet territory and capture Stalingrad. It was a bold move that could result in complete destruction of germanys panzer divisions, but Krupp had promised that more panzers were on the way and the junker militarists believed it was a risk worth taking.

Even though spectacular gains had been made and more seemed destinied to come there were certain signs of trouble. First the casualty rate of the winter and spring offensives had been stagering. The ten divisions under General Bajnóczy had sustained 85% casualties. Many of the Hungarian divisions were sent back home to recuperate since it appeared meaningless to have them in active combat. Many other units had sustained heavy damage. The government in berlin prefered to assemble new divisions rather than strengthen the existing ones, with reinforcements coming almost exclusively to the navy and airforce. The combined efforts of the carrier fleet, and the new turbojet naval bombers had wiped out the british carrier and battleship fleet, and severely wounded the American Carrier fleet. In a series of battles close to Gibraltar the german Carrier fleet dealt several severe blows to the US Navy.

Spain on the other hand was becoming a growing concern, the divisions in spain were undermanned, having sustained heavy losses during the winter battles for the basque mountains and hills. At the momement all new infantry divisions were sent to spain in order to ensure a swift defeat of spain and subsequent capture of the gibraltar.

The italian allies had Suez in view, but a british counteroffensive had made the dream of an axis mediterranean unlikely for the time being.

In leningrad our nine divisions have tied up nearly forty divisions trying to contain them.

air forces can be very effective, if you use them correctly

in HOI they would attack a single province, in HOI2 they attack/patrol an area, or a group of about 3-5 provinces. This is alot easier, with much less micromanaging on the air war, although it does make the V1 and V2 rockets ( .9 ic ~40 day build time ) very inaccurate, but they are still powerful, four ballistic missiles ( upgraded V2s ) reducing a lvl 10 airport to rubble.

Irradiate Russia! Nukes everywhere! Bomb Moscow!

not for a while longer, the next nuke will not come before september i guess, it's scheduled for march next year but I'm sure our new improved reactors will make that time considerably shorter. IG shall reign triumphantly over the chemical industries of the world!

In late july spain was finaly starting to collapse. The cost in manpower had been enormous, due to poor planning and overestimation of our troops abilities to beat overwhelming odds somewhere around 300,000 german soldiers lost their lives in our attempt at seizing gibraltar. But soon Gibraltar will fall and the Hannoverian regiment will once again hold the pillars of Heracles.

edti: note the unit strengths.

In Soviet Russia things are starting to look good too, even though more than half of the men in our original army have been killed the toll on the soviet army have been staggering and their number of divisions are comparable to ours. Unfortunately our control of baku has been comrpomised, it was taken through a daring raid over the black sea, but the effort wasn't reinforced since all the new troops were too badly needed in spain. Schade! The spearhead destinied to take stalingrad managed to to not only that but to also threaten moscow, before they we're pushed back. But they reunited with the troops pushing through belaruss towards moscow, and in a matter of days moscow will fall!

OOC: since surrounding moscow doesn't unsupply the troops the way surrounding berlin does. ;) /end OOC

Now it's just a rush and a push and the land is ours and we can concentrate on the USA, Africa and the Commonwealth troops in India.

Our first priority is to help out the italians by seizing suez, since they have been pushed back and probably will be holed up in Tripoli if we do not act before long.

The new Improved Jet Close Air Support have been raining down death on the armies beseiging Baku. But not at the rate we had expected. We really must focus more on developing more Airforce doctrines. What good is it having a Wunder Waffen with only amateurs to pilot it?

Furthermore, the Vorstand (now the principal governing body of the Nazi party) have anounced a renewed interest in long rage missiles, soon we will have missiles capable of reaching India, and sometime next year, to reach Washington!

There has been some discontent in the military of the IG Farben policy of not reinforcing any troops, other than the navy and airforce and instead focusing on assembling divisions de novo. But really, what is the use of sending new troops to divisions with inferior equipment? The Vision of the Vorstand will be victorious!

Vorstand has also made sure that the production planning of Germany has reached new levels of organization. Old Rathenauers Trust-to-end-all-trusts have been revived, and the new Seimens-trust is now completely self sustaining. Rathenauer has been posthumously rehabilitated and a grand statue of him has recently been uncovered in the heart of Berlin.

Wow, look at that advance into Russia! Thats very impressive - I feel sorry for all your abandoned units in the supply-chain though - send 'em all to Stalingrad - that will make them happy :)
