"Heil!" The story of a comman German Soldier

This is the story of Hans Schmidt a German footsoldier from a small town ouside Hamburg. The story begins in 1941 on the eastern front and Hans is 20 years old.

June 22 10am
50 miles into russian poland

Hans sat in the truck as his company moved forward into central russia. Operation Barbarosa had begun a few hours before but the 10th infantry (mot) hadn't encountered anything yet. " The Panzers got to have all the fun."Hans looked up to see who had spoken it was Heinric another private in his squad "now all the reds are runnin back to russia." then Someone else added " Hell Heinrich the Reds are already in Moscow now" the whole company burst out laughing. But then a mortar shell landed next to the truck and the whole regiment poured out of the trucks and formed a defencive line. The Shells stopped after a minute and then a mob of russians came out at them. Hans emptied his MAUSER at the russians as did everyone else, but the Russians kept coming and falling so he and the rest of the men kept fireing. Someone near him stood up and Shouted " You reds can't kill any one of us can y.." Right then he took a bullet in the throat and fell back weazing for a second and died. The fighting lasted another minute or so before the russians finally ran but it felt like forever to Hans. they stayed out for a few hour more to see if the Russians would come again but despite the ocasinal shot at a shadow nothing happend so eventually the officers ordered them back in the trucks. Before Hans got back in the truck he looked over at the body of apparently the one dead soldier. It was Heinric and somehow Hans was not suprised. Hans truck spent the rest the rest of the day saying how many Russians they killed in the skirmish. " I got twenty reds in the first minute." some private bragged "Oh please" Said the arrogant soldiers friend "you didn't even fire ten shots and you couldn't hit a russian if he was standing two feet in front of you." The whole truck burst out laughing. The two soldiers then started to argue about how many shots the first one had fired. Hans noticed that nobody said anything about Heinrc but then again nobody had really liked him anyway.

Good idea to take the point of view of a soldier. I wonder how long Hans migth survive and what his experiences will be. So I ll follow this AAR.

June 25 1941
central russia

Hans had been sleeping in his fox hole when the sound of artillery woke him. He had at first thought it was his own but when one of the companies trucks exploded he realized it was russian. This was the first time he had been under real artilery fire. He had enlisted after the blitz into france and when he had fought the greeks they had nothing more than small arms. Almost instantley his own artillery opened up and started shelling the russians back. The exchange whent on for an hour or so before the russian guns fell silent. Hans fell back asleep after a few minutes. He awoke in the morning to his sergent screaming at him to get himself in the truck so they could move out. Hans hoped into the truck and sat down next to a private named Rolf Wittman who was asleep and snoring, soon hans was asleep as well. He awoke a while later to rolf shakeing him awake. "Hans Hans the Fins and Turks just declared war on the Reds." Hans grogyness disapeared and was replaced with a happiness he hadn't experienced since he had laid down with ADALIA Jager before he had left for his unit. " That great now the russians will have to fight on three fronts." Then Hans realized something "Wait didn't the Turks just sign a treaty with the Soviets. Rolf smiled and said "Yeah but enough of the Turks were mad at the government for doing it that with a little help from the Luftwaffa and the SS they overthrew the republic and installed a new Government." Hans smiled to and said " The great thing is that now the turks can help us against the brits in the middle east. Rolf smiled even bigger. Hans heard cheering down the line as the word spread from truck to truck and tank to tank. Hans didn't know who but someone broke out some vodka and started passing it around, in a few minutes the whole platoon was drunk.

july 16 1941 noon
just outside Minsk

Hans was sitting in his fox whole with his friend Klaus Hamburg who despite his name had actually been born in Salzburg, Austria. They were looking for the another Soviet counterattack to drive them away from Minsk they had beaten back the first one but it was only a matter of time before the soviets tried again. There generals were complete idiots who knew nothing but human wave attacks but the soldiers were brave. They were so occupied with looking and waiting for the aatck that nobody noticed the bike with the battalion commander come up behind them. But when it stopped he jumped out and started yelling to the men in the fox hole nearest to him practily jumping up and down while he was doing it. Then cheering began to pass down the line until the one word reached his fox hole. "Invasion" Hans was confused at first but then it clicked and he realized it Sea Lion had gone forward. The Reichs Navy had defeated the Royal Navy last year in a huge upset which was mostly due to German Naval bombers in france. But with the invasion of the USSR nobody had thought that Sea lion would go forward until after they had won in the east. He must have said that out loud because Klaus said to him " Well bringing in the Spanish and Turks must have freed up enough men." Hans nodded. As the day passed more information had dribbled in apparently Hitler had been prepareing this for a long while and a decoy invasion had worked and drawn all the Limeys away from Dover were the real invasion had taken place. "Well this calls for Shnaps" said Hans, Klaus agrement was shown by him takeing a smig right out the bottle. In a few minutes they had both passed out as did most of the divison. Hans did rember thinking What they would do if the reds attacked.

July 20th
inside minsk

Hans had been sitting behind a sandbag bunker for hours now. on the 18th they had gone into minsk and had quickly occupied it but now the Soviets were counterattackingwith massive numbers. A yell from down the road was heard and soon no less than two hundred men came charging at Hans position. Hans opened up right away with his rifle and started takeing down russians one after anotherm, a second later the two machine guns opened up and started droping russians in the dozens. After less than a minute not one man was alive ahead of them, Hans knew by now that all the russians were dead because the ones that had run away had been cut down by their own officers. This combat had become routine and the Weinmarch was slowly regaing the parts of Minsk that they had lost to the inital Russian attack. " What else did they expect with Romanians guarding the perimeter." Hans said to himself. "JA" replied Rolf. Rolf and Hans had become friends in the last few days. Then a pair of old Panzer IV's moved up behind Hans unit and he and Rolf ran over to them to see if they could get some of the Panzer crews rasions. But then from the building on the right side of the road a rain of mortor rounds came down and landed on the Panzer closest to Hans and Rolf. The Panzers crew poured outof the tank as the ammunition began to cook off and mortars fell around them. HAns had droped to the ground almost right away and stayed there until the shelling stopped. Then he got up and looked around for Rolf, He eventually did find him but with a large piece of the destroyed panzer IV in his neck. He didn't even bother calling for a medic he had been dead for awile. As Hans picked up his rifle and walked back to his post, a single tear rolled down his cheek.

Btw, I hate to nitpick, especially when it may me wrong; but mortars, especially Russian ones, would not be able to pierce or destroy a IVD which is what you are most likely using.

Btw, I hate to nitpick, especially when it may me wrong; but mortars, especially Russian ones, would not be able to pierce or destroy a IVD which is what you are most likely using.

I'm not sure myself if it could pierce the armor but Panzer IV armor but if it can't then it was aliens

lol, very well. Btw, Russians often sent 3-6 tanks charging in towards the enemy. If this happened and a T-34, perhaps, destroyed your PzIV it would be more lifelike

July 23
In a corn Field just past Minsk

The 10th had suceded in pushing the Reds back out of Minsk and had begun to move again. Hans Truck had got about 2miles outside minsk when they were told to get off the trucks and find a defensive position. Hans was a little curious as to why but when the Tigers and Panzer IVs from the 5th Panzer division moved up he got a pretty good idea. Somebody Whether or not it was a one of the local collaborators or a luftwaffa plane sombody had seen a large unit of Russian tanks moveing up toward them. Hans unit spread out behind the scatered trees and rocks in the field and waited for the attack. In what seemed like days but had to be just a minute or two a huge line of Soviet Panzers probably 20 panzers in total started moving toward them. The Tigers that Had formed up behind them moved straight out to engage them in a wedge formation. Hans didn't see the Panzer IV but after a minute he saw them advancing on both flanks of the Soviet line. The soviets were still advancing straight on and so the men in his unit who had PanzerFausts opened up on the soviet line. In another minute the line began pulling back but not one made it to the forest from were they had come. When the last T-34 went up in smoke and fire Hans looked around all the Red tanks had been destroyed and the 5th Panzer had only lost 3 Panzer IVs. "If this is the best the reds can do they wont have any tanks soon." Hans said to nobody in paticular. About 5 diffrent people all replied with "Ja".
