“Your words and promises are fair, but because they are new to us, and of uncertain import, I cannot consent to them so far as to forsake that which I have so long observed with the whole English nation."
-Æthelberht Cyning

Boy, do I wish they had an emoticon to say "Aw, shucks, folks, jus' tryin' to do my job there" !
Honestly, I am much honoured that Canonized picked me for the Showcase. And since the best way to react to praise is most probably honesty, then I started writing Crossfires, there were times when I'd sneak into the "General Discussion" thread to see if somebody hadn't decided I was the greatest writer on Earth.
Now, of course, I've grown a little bit wiser - and a little bit wider. However much I enjoy this honour, I know that the best kind of praise one writer can get is to have people read the story, enjoy the story and - be still my heart - debate the story with the author. So in true Academy Awards fashion I'd like to dedicate this week's Showcase to my readers. If it hadn't been for their loyalty, and their comments, "Crossfires" would probably have petered out a long time ago. If only one of them was enticed to go check who this French general or German politician was, then I'll have succeeded way beyond my initial expectations.
An alternate History can only benefit from a rich real-life History. In this respect I can only humbly express my heartfelt gratitude to a few billion men and women, from France of course but also from every corner of the world, whose lives and decisions shaped France's past, present, and future. Truly, Clio provided me with a cast of thousands.
Now, it's time to end the speech-makin', and to start the successor-findin'. I'll embark on that quest immediately, so you can have another Showcase before Christmas. Expect an answer on Thursday or friday, before yours truly leaves for a well-deserved Christmas vacation !
Very many congratulations.

Alright, ladies and gentlemen. Your loyal servant and grateful writer has enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame you've been so kind to offer him, and now it's time to bestow this honour to somebody who deserves it better !
This task hasn't been an easy one, let me tell you, for this forum is full of talented writers, dealing with every historical period, every country, and every genre. From swashbuckling heroes to 1930s, black-clad villains, from 19th century regal-looking statesmen to Renaissance thugs, AARs here have everything History ever produced - including a few thing our beloved Muse never thought of.
Well, me, you know how I am - I'm a 20th-century fan through and through, and so my bias will show as I'm about to reveal Christmas' Weekly Showcase.
It's a story of political intrigue. It's a story of human passions. It's the destiny of great nations twisting in the winds of History. It's the fate of many hinging upon the torment of a few. It's....
The Last Mission , by The Executer !
And, as I slink back to my favourite spot in the shadows, it's an honour to put this great story under the Showcase spotlight.
This being done, Merry Christmas to all - and my most special wishes to my readers, who I hope never to disappoint too much !
A most excellent choice ! Well done , Executer ! Congratulations !

A belated thanks to AF and everyone for this unexpected honor! You guys have definitely inspired me to continue with the story...and even have had me dreaming inspiration at work! I figured out how our hero will meet the love of his life while waiting for one of my batches to finish...
At any rate, I've now realized I've hogged the weekly showcase for 1.5 more weeks than I'm allowed, so I'll toss it off to a very deserving story. Go read it now, 'cause the author is building towards a great climactic moment long anticipated...sound familiar? His narrative sequences have been very inspirational to me...and his characters are awesomely developed. You will develop an almost visceral reaction to some of them. What are you still waiting for? Oh...right....and without further ado:
That story is...
The Golden Nation by DerKaiser.
Congratulations DerKaiser!
The Last Mission A Love Story
There is no way to peace along the way of safety. For peace must be dared, it is itself the great venture and can never be safe. Peace is the opposite of security. To demand guarantees is to want to protect oneself. Peace means giving oneself completely to God's commandment, wanting no security, but in faith and obedience laying the destiny of the nations in the hand of almighty God, not trying to direct it for selfish purposes. Battles are won, not with weapons, but with God. They are won when the way leads to the cross.
Congrats DerKaiser! 2nd week, 2nd Award. Great job!
