Persia - A Crumbling Empire

This is my second AAR (third if our MP Balance of Power AAR is counted) though my first can not really be counted as it was completed in 1842 due to Burma being annexed by UK after 5 years of war.

Hopefully this AAR will go better than my last and any comments will be greatly appreciated.

I am playing 1.03b Vicky with Ed_Fix Mod.

I will post screenshots as I update the game which will probably be about twice a week.

I'm part-way through reading Coz1's Persian AAR, and it seems to me that Persia is an interesting country to play.

Part 1 - The Start of The Reforms

This first screenshot is at the start of the game and shows Persia's territory and its Borders. The most dangerous country around is Russia with which we share a large border. Ottoman Empire are the next biggest and then we also have borders with a couple of small indian states, Afghanistan and Bukkhara.



As you can se we have a reasonable population size of 16million and have a low level of literacy and are ranked 48th in the world.


The aims of my government are to radically reform the Persian country by increasing spending for education to improve the level of literacy. To start to research into new means of transport and start to improve the countries infrastructure. Also by upgrading the Persian Armed Forces to be equipped to deal with any possible invasions of stronger countries. Persia also hopes to secure diplomatic links with major powers to secure its future and peace in the region.

Hopefully I will be able to turn Persia into a Civilised Nation and become a respected and powerful nation.

Good luck. Persia has lots of pesky rebellions at the beginning but if you get through these then you should do ok

Yay! Persia! Use diplomats to keep up relations with Russia, take the modernizing events, and DON'T get into that early war with afghanistan -- war exhaustion plus the rising militancy from those modernizing events spells badness. Besides, there are no Afghan provinces of your national culture anyway.

Oh, and I found the most effective method of revenue-raising to be 100% tariffs, and taxes below 30% -- keeps consciousness quite low and rakes in enough cash to help your initial steps towards industrialization.

Part 2 - A Storm Brewing

When the Mohammed Shah event fired I took the option of letting the British reforms continue as I need good relations with great powers and could not pass on the opportunity to waste technology and Prestige.



Persia continued to build up its stockpile of money and Prestige while improving relations with the Russian's.
Also the country has revolted in force and most of the past four years have been spent quashing rebellions in our country, at the worst time one of our regiments sided with the rebels though was quickly annihalated by one of our loyal divisons.

The Population in Persia has increased and people have been moving between states freely to find work. The first Railroad has been comissioned and the country is only waiting for vital resources needed to build the track before starting work immediately.

As you can see we have jumped up the world rankings to 23th position now making us the highest ranked Uncivilised nation. Russia has also started to guard their border between our two counries heavily this is an ominous sign as Persia has been trying to improve the relations between our two nations.

Does anyone know how to stop research as I am resaerching a tech I got from the Shah event.

Also how to increase industrial score as I need to vastly improve it to gain indepedant nation status. As I cant build factories or improve RGO's and i don't think railroads give much to the score and are expensive.

Actually, I believe you can build factories -- I'm almost certain I did as China in an earlier game when I was still uncivilized.

Failing that, RRs don't give much, but every little bit helps; stay out of debt and maintain as big an income as possible, that seems to do it.

If all else fails, invade the Ottomans and see if you can't extract a factory or two at gunpoint.

How to stop research? Hm -- I haven't ever had that problem before. And are you certain you got it from the Shah event? Whenever an event or a trade gives me a tech, my research stops right there.

just wait till the civ event fires for you in 1848. till then swallow afghan, improve relations w/ russia, colonise if you can get a hold of some cement/lumber

I can build factories but dont have any machine parts to do so.

I looked again and it changed the research when the event fired.

Hopefully the next update will be Tomorrow if I have enough time.

Part 3 - An Army Amasses

Persian Armed forces has massively increased it's presence on the border between Persia and Russia as a precaution due to the large amounts of Russian forces on the other side of the border. Persia has added to it's standing army with new units of irregular troops. A new General has also been recruited for the Northern Persian Army.

The economy is slowly growing and Persia has a lot of cash to spare for furthur reforms though no other countries are willing to trade Lumber with us so the planned railroad expansion is still on hold. Diplomats are still scarce and so relations with other countries have not been strengthened.

The Persian National Army has completed successful campaign's in Makran and Kalat have led to those territories being added to the Persian Empire.

Good luck. I was planning a game with an uncivilized nation next, and Persia was one the list. So I’ll be following along.

By the way, if you want prestige, research the cultural techs. As for industrial score, I think it’s determined by your total production, including RGOs and factories. Because RRs increase output of RGOs, it might be a good idea to build them in your best RGOs. But remember that loans will reduce your industrial score (it’s 1 ip for every 1K of debt, I believe).

never played Persia myself but arabic culture? souds promising... mays you to build some transport and take one country of the Arabic Peninsula : like the one in white (i forget the name) but chek before if they produce something valuable (like opium)
