If I dont want to, the game should not try to force me back on the historical path.
PDX did great with eu3in to make this possible. It goes on the coast of RP and flavor. Almost all nations feel exchangeable.

4 me the fun with pdx games is to experience "what could have been"

About nation specific units - when a country installs a fanatic racist warmonger regime it can raise units based on its traditions that only such a country can raise. Japan had plenty suicide units. When the luftwaffe and reichsmarine employed suicidal missions it was only more difficult because the leading ranks were unhappy with it. So i think it should be absolutely possible to employ them when the situation is serious.

It would be great if the tech developement in hoi3 could model the impact of war experience on the development of arms. The tiger Tank was developed after the germans experienced the weakness of their tanks against KV and t34 tanks. The allies developed heavier tanks after the experienced the tigers.
There is a lot of time. I hope they develop a game with an option that e.g. allows peace between uk und germany without total conquest. The circumstances have to be realistic - as much as fiction can be realistic

Well, I am really thrilled for hoi3!
    Hear, hear! Welcome!

...and me too. HoI3 has a LOT of promise, I think.

Welcome aboard - glad to have you. Your mod looks interesting, by the way... when I have the chance, I'll make a point of reading through it. Sort of reminds me of a rather odd ahistorical Ireland set up I've been messing with...

Anyway, to everyone else who might stumble across this thread - it also has a social group that's open to all. Please, join! The more the merrier.

I like this response. In fact this is why I only like (as oppose to love) HoI2. It's kinda... the same every single game. Not exactly the same... but sure seems to be a lot more of "the same" than any other paradox game I've tried, thanks to the hard coded war declarations. It's like EU3 country quests on steroids. They should really have this feature controlled with an on/off switch in the options, as already mentioned by others.

EDIT: I'll add the ahistoric to sig in a bit, but also I'd highly recommend everybody to add the clear "this is NOT a historical simulation anyway so stop whining" quote from the "don't talk about this subject" sticky as well.

Hello. I think what makes this game good is the detail level, and the historical accuracy . Like no oil and no fleet for Germany, and a huge fleet and huge resources for USA. The first time I played Hearts of Iron, I made a great Armored German Army and the lack of oil blocked me very early. I think that if you want to remove everything historical from this game, you have to include in that also the limited time-frame and the resource set for each country, because it is historical that Romania's oil production was very big during the 30's, and the starting industrial capacity too, because it is historical stuff that Germany had a better industry than USSR, isn't it? I think it would be a very different game.

About going to war with Poland on 1st september 1939, I do not like this thing, because I am such a poor player it always gets me unprepaired, but I think this is fun. I played Rise of nations for a while and it was getting boring to be 2 ages before the opponents and fighting elephants with fighter planes. I don't like the tech rush style of the "Age of Empires" games, actually, I hate it

Oh, rest assured, members of the AA aren't suggesting that Paradox makes games where everyone can do everything. Not at all. Rather, the Association simply exists as a place for people who appreciate alternative, at least somewhat plausible outcomes to historical events, to gather and compare notes. For instance, what if Japan focused more on keeping its land forces modern during World War 2? What if Poland became willingly fascist, and instead of being invaded by Germany, joined them in fighting the Soviets, considering Danzig a fair price to pay for survival? Or what if Ireland actually unified as a single kingdom much earlier on (for an example from Crusader Kings), and was able to fend off Norman and English aggression? What if the Ottomans had been more competent in the Great War, for a taste of Vicky, or what if Germany never unified?

Most, if not all, AA members love PI games for the same reason you do - an incredible attention to detail in their games, and lots of historical context. However, we like to ask "What if?" instead of defeating Japan and liberating Europe for the 100,000th time as the United States, or yet again pulling off a successful Battle of Britain. We like to see where things might have gone, had things gone just a bit differently...

I'm a bit new here, but I would love to start doing/making some Ahistoric runs of the PI games.

    So yea, count me in.

    I'll sign up!

With games I always aim to remove any arbitery/historical obstructions to perfectly legitimate actions. I find re-playing history with the benefit of hindsight a very shallow experiance and think that game designers too often deliberately narrow a player's choices in order to get them to the desired outcome.

By contrast, the games that I play over and over again are those that have a 'Sandbox' approach. I can understand why people might want to re-fight history, but personally i'd rather be plonked in the middle of the historical context and figure my own (unique) way out.

I like the idea behind this association, very interesting. I am very much into a-historical, really a more accurate term would be counterfactual, scenarios when I play HoI2. I actually became fascinated with the idea of a entirely different World War II, in my case based on what would happen if the Carolingian Dynasty had not died out.

I wanted to make it into a mod of my own, up till now I've been enjoying mods created by other people that had their own counterfactual bent. With HoI3 coming out and all, no one wanted to pursue it with me, so I'll be patient until it is released and hope there will be a modding community that will help out developing it as it is overly ambitious. I know this is not a community for modding, but I'm sure a few of you have to have some sense of what your doing.

Oh, yeah and sign me up, this sounds great.

Well, I signed up for the social group before even thinking about coming here. Ahistorical writing is by far my favorite, and thank god paradox gave us the ability to shape history how we see fit! I've done so in Vicky and carried it over to HoI2 and it couldn't be better! Sign me up!
