The Rise of Sweden - a fascist AAR

After a half year break I will now continue my AAR on fascist Sweden. Sadly I had to format my computer so the game is gone. On the upper hand I didnt really play that long so I will continue on the AAR anyway. I will be playing 1.06 c core 0.84pe. So enjoy folks and behold the might of the nordic empire.

Fifteenth of october 1935, the swedish prime minister, Per Albin Hansson is holding a speech in the riksdag. Gathered to listen is the members of the riksdag, some journalists and seven students of politics. Per Albin has been going on for about half an hour and the audience is getting a little sleepy. The journalists is regretting going there and the politics students wonders what this man is getting to.

Into the riksdag, in a singleline is twelve persons coming. All is wearing black coats. They line in a halfcircle into the back of the riksdag. Per Albin, a little surprised of the awkward behavior pauses for a second then continues. Forward from the group a man is coming. He bursts his coat open and pulls out a gun. With a loud voice he says:

”Too long has your corrupt communist politics ruined our nation. Were taking power!”
A single bullet hits Per Albin in the forehead and he crushes down into the floor. The rest of the coat-dressed group uncover their coats, machineguns in hands.

”Spare the journalits, slay the rest!”

In an inferno of bullets and blood the audience gets massacred. The person who seems to be the leader makes his way thru the corpses up to the center of the room. Pushing away the body of late Per Albin he rises and adresses the journalists and his comrades.

”People of Sweden, I Erik Hjelm, leader of the National Swedish Fascist Party am sieging power. As I speak, people in my organisation is taking control of keystructures around the country. We are many and we are determinated. We will free you from the foul communist government that have destroyed our country. As Gustav Vasa once did, so do I today, liberating Sweden from oppressers. Then it was the danes, now it is the deceiving power of democracy. This is a well prepared operation, resistance will be futile. A restructure of the militarycommand is going on leaving to me the power of the military. I advice to you, to stay in your homes while we clear out the last pieces of socialist rubbish that poisons this state.
Too long have we been a nation of decadence, the time has come for us to rise! We, once glorious shall that be again! Our enemies will tremble of the mention of our name. Our deeds will be heard of centuries from now. Our great nation will show the world that nobody, and I say nobody steps on Sweden! We will show the world that we are a nation second to none! Today, is a milestone in history, today is the day when Sweden no longer will be slaves. Today we mark our future, today is a day for vengence, we demand retaliation for former humiliations. We will come and we will conquer, noone will oppose the swedes! People of Sweden, I salute you.”

A time of terror hits the country. In every city and town deathsquads hunts down socialistsleaders, unionleaders, members of the communistparty. Militaryofficers are shot in hundreds, replaced my members of the fascistparty. All military regiments have under long time been infiltrated by the fascists making taking control easy. Those of the military that do oppose the new leadership are scatterd and unorganiced making defeat of them easy for the wellorganized fascists.
The policecore try on many occasions to stop the fascists but are then shot upon sight. Fascistloyal soldiers is patroling the streets, upholding order.

When the first wave of killings are to an end, it is followed by a time of persecution. Enemies of the state are rallied up put into camps deep into the forest. Never heard of more.
Industry leaders, goverment administrators, local politicians are either removed or threatend into obedience.

The people of Sweden stand helpless to the new order. The fascists have swift taken power and is determinated to use it.

This is the political situation of Sweden in january 1936.

The beginning sure does remind me of a James Bond book.

Is there some thing you can do to make them Fascists, or did you mod it?

January 1936
Erik Hjelm, leader of the National Swedish Fascist Party, prime minister, chief of command of the military, ruler of Sweden sits in his office in the government-palace in Stockholm. Before him knees the king Gustav V.

”Yes, you can now rise, your majesty” Hjelm says behind his desk. The king, broken after months of psychological torture rises to an unsteady position. With and arrogant smile on his face Hjelm walks over to the king and positions himself infront of him.

”Now, we wont do anything foolish again would we? I dont think the queen wants to loose another child. Dont you agree with me? You see, i will execute members of the royal family in the same pace as you do your little diplomatic scheemes. Next time there is an uprising or a sabotage from any of the people that is loyal to the monarchy I will assume that you had something to do with it. Do we understand eachother?”

The king lowers his head and nods. Hjelm gives him a small push on the shoulder and the king turns around and exits the room. Hjelm, satishfied with himself returns to his desk. Into the room, second in command, August Stehn enters. Member of the fascistparty he's one of the founders and completly loyal to his leader.

”Good, Stehn, ive been expecting your rapport on our military status.”

”Sire! With deserters, ’disapperings’ and revolters we had loss of about one third of our army. The fleet is in better condition, maybe a sixth. With our draftings though we have managed to refill the empty spaces. As we speak we count four full infantry divisions.”

”Four you say... It is indeed impressive of our military organizers to have been able to draft so many soldiers in so short time, indeed... But still, its not enough. I have promised the people victories, conquests, glory, how am I supposed to achive that with four louzy divisions?”

”Well, sire...”

”Silent! Gather our militarystaff and our adminastrive leaders. I will get this country mobilized!”

”Yes sire!”

Stehn salutes and exits the room. Hjelm returns to his desk, studies a bundle of documents laying scattered.

”Protests from Britain, France, Spain, Poland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, protests, protests. They will all pay! Clerk! File these and tell the foreign department to write answers, humble answers. We dont want to reveal our intensions yet.”

Erik Hjelm leans back in his chair, looks outside the window. A bronzestatue of him is about to be put in place outside his palace. He smiles. He would get this country on feet. Studying documents of industryrapports and actions taken to assure growth. A knock at the door interrupts him.

”Yes?”

In comes a man in brown suit, carrying a briefcase. Disturbed and annoyed Hjelm asks him what he wants.

”Honored Leader, my name is Sven Karlsson, representing Bofors corporation. I have brought plans of the weapons you wanted.”

”Excellent! Come in, sit. We have much to discuss. Together we shall put my army into working condition.”

After a long discussion Hjelm and Karlsson manages to reach a agreement regarding the future armament of the army. Karlsson leaves and in comes the militarycommand.

”Sire.” The four generals salutes.

”Yes, sit down.”

”We are concerned and worried of your prioriation of resources concerning our military defence.”

”What about it?”

”We see in the reports weve receiven that no resources at all will be spent on our navy, airforce spending put on the future. All the other major powers in europe develop their airforce. Not maybe now, but in a year or two, we will lack behind.”

”Airplanes, since when do we swedes need to fly in the air to wage war? Does Norway has any airplanes? Denmark? Finland? No! Our strenght lies on the ground, our legions of steel will crush our enemies without mercy. We dont need airplanes to be victorious. Navy, we already have a large navy. No other power near us has one like us. No, our future is written with machineguns, artillery, grenadelauchers and tanks!”

”About the tanks sire, according to our information our tank program is close to nonexistent.”

”Thats what I want to change! Fearless huge steel beasts, roaming the battlefield, killing everything in its way! Everything takes time, first we must reinforce and arm our infantry divisions, then we can talk about tanks and maybe airplanes. I think thats all gentlemen.”

The generals salutes and walks away. Hjelm frowns and return to the study of his documents, everything will work out just fine. His army would be the finest in the nordic. And then they will all pay.

Erik Hjelm was sitting in his high seat at the headquarters of the National Swedish Fascist Party. In front of him were the representants of all the departments in his government. Progress were going well, he was proud over his partys achivements, his achivements. Bofors corporation were doing their job providing new weapons for his army, his prognoses of industrygrowth were very positive, the uprisings from the communitst were also less frequent. This months executions of left-wing rebels were the lowest since the revolution, only 128. Things were going smooth. Words from the continent was disturbing though. Italy annexing Ethiopia, maybe not disturbing but still, an european power growing in strenght. Why didnt he have any colonies? Maybe a swift war in asia? With four divisions! Maybe not. In time though, in time.

The book I was referring to was Icebreaker. They never made a movie of it. There was a Nazi Army, who murdered communists. In one scene they appeared out of nowhere standing in a halfcircle. Then they shot some communist weapon dealers.

May 1936
”Sire, sire!” Second in command August Stehn (now even General Stehn) bursts into the office of Erik Hjelm, beloved leader of Sweden.

”Yes General Stehn, what is so important?”

”Its a report from our intelligence sire, we have spotted an hidden norweigian airfield up in the mountians, an entire division of fighters!”

”What?! How could this be possible? Who is in charge of intelligence? Well it doesnt matter, execute him anyway. An entire division! God knows what damage that could have done to us if we attacked without knowing of its existence... Damage on what by the way, we dont have an airforce. We cant lose the battle of the sky to norway! Stehn, get that Bofors connection here immediately and the generals and the chief of armaments.”

Five minutes later the room is filled.

”Gentlemen, ive just been informed by the soon to be late chief of intelligence that norway do have an airforce. And Sweden cannot afford to lack behind in the race of warfare in the sky. Sven Karlsson of Bofors, can you build airplanes for me?”

”Im afraid not sire, not in working condition anyway.”

”What? I trust you to support my army with weapons and you cannot even build an airplane, execute him!”

Guards comes in and drags the soon to be late Karlsson out of the room.

”Ok, chief of armaments, i command you to achive the means of constructing airplanes for me, bombers, fighters, whatever it takes to crush those arrogant norweigians.”

”Yes, sire, right away sire. By the way sire, we have finished applying the new computers.”

”The new what?”

”Computers sire, its a electronic device that simpifies alot of calculation amoung other things.”

”By the soul of Karl XI, what do I pay you for?! Computers? Who clarified that order?”

”The soon to be late chief of intelligence sire.”

”Exec... Ok, well, maybe its not such a bad idea after all. Proceed with these computers of yours, maybe they will prove usefull, somehow. Well gentlemen if theres not anymore I call this meeting to an end.”

The leader of Sweden, a little exhausted of the mornings executions and computers retired early that day.

Erik Hjelm, leader of the great (soon to be at least) empire of Sweden didnt trust the german infront of him. But his country needed coal so he held in with his opinion, that and the fact that Germany had an army 15 times the size of his.

”So, it is a deal then?”

”Yes, german coal is always welcome in Sweden.”

”Yes the Führer will be much pleased with this deal. He is always in need of swedish steel. He is a little worried though, of the balance up here in the north.”

”Well, you can say to your Führer that he doesnt need to worry, we swedes are a very peaceful people.”

”Yes indeed... You are... Well I think that would be all.”

The german rises and leaves the room. Hjelm curses silently after him.

”Soon northen germany will be ours again. And then what will you say, huh!”

”Sire, sire!” Second in command General August Stehn, chief of intelligence enters.

”Yes General Stehn, chief of intelligence, what is it?”

”Sire, Bofors have completed their delivery of machine guns to our troops.”

”Excellent. Congratulate them. Send out a notice to our neighbours and let them tremble in fear.”

”Affarmative sire.”

Satisfied with himself Hjelm retires back to his desk, planning for the big invasion.

July 1936
”Yes sire, civilwar, that is correct.”

”By Erik XIV, these spaniards are indeed a furious people. A little of that spirit wouldnt hurt here. Ok General Stehn, hows the status right now?”

”It seems that a group of generals have rebeled agaist the government. We dont really have much information but I can say that they have sieged an impressive bit of territory, a real threat sire. To the spanish government that is sire.”

”Lousy southerners, cant even control their own people. Do we have any information how Germany, France, Italy and Britain stands in the question?”

”The rebels seems to have some right-wing agenda, fascist you could say. Germany and Italy are supporting them. France and UK are taking a more distant position, after all they did support the democratic government, even though they were not allies.”

”That you say, yes... Well it doesnt really have nothing to do with us. Spain is far away, whoever wins the war doesnt affect us. Send a note to the spanish ambassador that we are sorry for there domestic trouble and that we REALLY would like to help, make sure he gets the point, ok? Hehe, louzy southerners, havnt really been any spirit in them since the 16th century. Well maybe these rebels can change that, but that is a later concern, dismissed Stehn.”

”Yes sire!”

Watching through his window seeing his impressive palace growing around him Hjelm relaxed, Spain was as he said far away. What was of deeper concern though was that this kind of trouble spread. He wanted nothing but stability until he was ready.

August 1936
”Party members, fellow brothers in arms, citizens and comrades, I present to you the day when Sweden stops depending of other nations for military protection. Today we say to the world that we no longer will stand aside in worldwide conflicts, today we set our agenda. We now make our own rules, nobody tells us what to do anymore. With our new revolutionary weapons, these new mortars I assure you that noone can defeat us. We are afraid of nobody. We make the rules now! The future belongs to us. Our army no longer needs to fear defeat of superior powers, we are now those superiors! Sweden, I say to you; honor and glory, our future holds both for us!”

Under deafening applauses Erik Hjelm, supreme leader of Sweden stands down from the podium saluting the masses. Making his way thru the crowds to his armed vehicle, shaking hands and exchanging smiles with the stern up people. Well in his car he sights and turns his attention to Stehn, general, second in command, chief of intelligence.

”Do you think they bought it?”

”Absolutly sire, noone can defeat us now!”

”Do you think they bought it?”

”Errr, sire...?”

”Do you think they bought it?”

”Well, maybe sire, the people yes, but you can fool, err, convince the military command, they know the truth. We may be better armed than norway, but Finland has greater numbers than we do and Denmark is hard to reach, despite our great navy. As we have discussed before, if the other nordic countries make a common cause against us we are at the moment gone.”

”Yes I know that, you dont need to remind me. That is why our attack must be fast and swift. First Norway, then concentrate our forces to the east on finland, protecting our coast from the danish navy until we invade them from all sides. As long as Russia or Germany dont mix we can do it! Worst case we must give the russians some territories in the east and the germans some of the southern. But still, Sweden, once again sole ruler of the north!”

”Yes sire, we will.”

”Indeed we will.”

November 1936
”Sire, sire. News from the south. The fascists in spain are expanding their territory and Belgium has left their alliance with Britain. Great news on all fronts sire!”

”Good, congratulate the fascist fraction in Spain of their great achivement and send a note to Belgium welcoming them into the league of neutral countries. Make it some rubbish of peace and neutrality, you know. And bring me our military staff, they had something to discuss I heard.”

”Sure thing sire.”

Into the office of Erik Hjelm three Generals and the chief of armaments comes.

”Gentlemen, you had some plans to discuss.”

”Yes, beloved leader. We have finished arming our troops with the new submachinegun weve received from Bofors. Our army growing in strenght even more.”

”Excellent work, we are the best. May Gustav Vasa watch over you, dismissed.”

Erik Hjelm leaning back in his chair smiled for himself. How could his enemies even think of victory when he was so great?

December 1936
"Sire! Sire! Great leader of glorious Sweden. Wonderful news from the south!"

General Stehn bursted thru the door to Hjelms bedroom disturbing his sleep.

"What in the name of Birger Jarl are you doing HERE, in MY bedroom, in the NIGHT?"

Erik Hjelm reached for his gun in his drawer determined to shoot his second in command.

"Sire, the fascists are victorious! Spain now free from the leftwing riffraff!"

Hjelm, a little confused from the sudden news went still. Then suddely leaped into the air screaming of joy.

"Haha! Fascism is wheel of the world, we conquer everywere!"

Hugging his second in command they both danced the room. One of Hjelms bodyguards looked astonished into the bedroom, a little scared of the behavior of his leader. Hjelm and Stehn noticing this stopped immediately. Hjelm again grabbing for his pistol, gunning down the witness to this for him embarrassing moment.

"Hrrm, well. So it is then, Spain now our friends. Send an gratulation card to their leader, whatever his name is."

"Yes, ofcourse Sire. Right away."

A few days later. Erik Hjelm walking his park around his new palace in Stockholm. Admiring his bronzestatue raised to his honor in the beginning of the revolution.

"Isnt it wonderful?" Hjelm sighed for himself.

His staff, not sure if he wanted them to agree or not all nodded. Hjelm noticing this smiled for himself. He had them in his hand.

"Great Leader." The chief of armament adressed him. "We have begun training of our troops with the new equipment from Bofors that we have received. It is much more advanced than our previous weapons. We believe that within a few months we can improve our troops even more."

"Is that so? What are you thinking of?"

"Machineguns, mortars, artillery. We have seen an rapid development in arms this year. In this pace we will by far beat our neighbours."

"Excellent, excellent! Dismissed minister. Now minister of industry. What?"

"Sire, our massproduction program is ready for testing in our fabrics. Remeber? You, I and the CEO of Bofors agreed to this a some months ago. To match USA and Britain in industry development. We are now there!"

"Great! Now the west will see the productivity of the Swedes. Combined with our superior weapon technology we will have the best army in Europe. Dismissed gentlemen."
