A Spring Opera and The Summer Soldier
1864-03-00 : April 1, 1864 : We went with Nothing like a good Opera in Opera House.
from the Richmond Times
The Richmond Society of Gentlemen for the Fine Arts has finally finished build the first opera house in the capital. Before this, New Orleans was the only city in the South that could boast of having such an edifice of high culture. One of the members of the Society said, “that situation was quite appalling, so we gathered funds from some Tidewater gentlemen and got the government to contribute a significant amount to the endeavor. It was money well spent.” Most people agree and are quite happy to see such a prominent displays of Southern civilization, even in the midst of our struggle for independence. Tonight is opening night and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” is to be the first performance. President Stevens was invited but kindly declined the offer.
April 3: to the President and Congress,
We have been turned back in our efforts to take Pittsburgh by Federal forces in superior numbers. We believe that it maybe quite impossible to secure that region unless more troops are committed to the job. The army is currently withdrawing toward Harrisburg to regroup.
Gen. RE Lee
Elias Tarfarius gives us an account of operations following the Pittsburgh campaign
Lee had gone into the Pittsburgh campaign with five full divisions and came out with only 29,582. The goal had been to take the whole state to force the US to the peace table and to take away Pittsburgh specifically because it was the major industrial and military center for the Union. If Lee had been able to take and hold the region, the Union war effort in both New England and Maine would have been seriously crippled. Now at the same time, Gen. Jackson was repulsed at Germantown as he attempted to march to retake Philadelphia. This effectively put on hold any more offensive in the state until later in the month of April when a reinforced Army of Northern Virginia took the field again. At the Battle of Quaker Hedgerow (June 28), near Philadelphia, 35,000 under Lee and Jackson flanked and crushed 24,000 Union troops under Brigadiers Harrington (who was killed by a cannon ball) and Ackroyd. On July 7th, Philadelphia once again fell to the Confederates.
The most unfortunate Harrington
Meanwhile in Maine, the French had secured Easton and soon destroyed the hastily recruited Union soldiers that blocked their march on Bangor in early July. The French forces (10th corps) numbered about 17,844 effectives with more always on the way.
