August 29, 1861 - The White House... in Richmond that is.

The worst news possible had just come in a telegraph. "Army routed. Stop. Retreating down the valley and arcoss the Rappahanock. Stop. Will require reinforcements. Stop. R.E.L."

Why in Heaven's name had he gone along with the plan to attack the Yankees at Manassas with all the forces in Virginia? Now Richmond could be open to attack and no one would be able to stop it. The man who made that plan would pay, for sure, but now was not the time to consider that. President Davis slumped in his chair, knowing now that there was a long fight ahead. If only the folks across the pond would lend a hand.

Morning of September 28 - The Camp of the Army of Northern Virginia, near Staunton

Gen. Jackson *riding up*: Good Morning General. Are you enjoying your laruels today?

Gen. Lee: If by laruels you mean coffee, then yes *laughs*.

Gen. Jackson: The Almighty has truly blessed us and only sucha short time after so great a defeat. I think the Lord was testing us and now perhaps the fruit is ripe.

Gen. Lee: Ripe? Sir, your mysticism never ceases to amaze me... explain.

Gen. Jackson: General, what we must do is crush the enemy at Manassas junction and then invade the North, take the war away from our homes and into the Yankee businessmen's.

Gen. Lee: The other general that proposed that to the President is now on his way to the Trans-mississippi and you, sir, are far to valuable for that. I suggest you keep that to yourself for now.

Gen. Jackson: Politics will not interfere with the Lord's work. We have won a great victory and are sure to have many more if we can follow them up, take Washington, Philadelphia, tear up the B&O railroad. Its just a matter of timing, thats all, just timing...

    Farr at the Gates!

from Chapter Three of The History of the War of Independance by Judah P. Benjamin

... and so all the political warfare in Congress stopped because of the approach of the enemy. Just as the President had feared, 3 Federal division manuvered around the Army of Virginia, still recovering at Fredricksburg, and marched on toward Richmond. At this time, the President made one of his greatest decisions in that he forgave Gen. Beauregard and put him in command of the Army of Virginia and the defense of the city (with Lee being called down from the Valley also). On the 5th, the fighting commenced at a place called Seven Pines. Although we had superior numbers (5 divisions) and this Brigadier Farr being a no man of talent or importance, the army was still suffering from low morale. Still, by the mere force of numbers, we broke the enemy and for now there would be no more cries about "Hannibal at the gates" in the Richmond papers.

November 27 - The White House... in Richmond that is.

He could not think about the election, but he had to. The news from the west was troubling, and thus, worrying; turning hairs more grey every day. Gen. Jackson had decided to pay a visit to the rebellious West Virginians, but what after that. Who would decide the fate of the nation. Things were not looking well for Davis' Democrats and his own Vice President was running against him as leader of the traditionalist Whigs. Those men who would dare be so divisive in time of war needed to be gotten rid of, but there was nothing he could legally. The Whigs! How could anyone vote for men who hold slavery and black inferiority as sacred virtues. Davis knew well that sooner or later this must come to an end, at least slowly, intergrating the bondsmen into society. But that was the distant future, all thoughts must be on the present.

1862-00-09 : January 10, 1862 : We are attacked by hostile armies of USA in Jefferson City.

    Mr. President

Having subdued Upper West Virginia and taking Harper's Ferry (fully stocked I might add), I know that it is time to take the offensive to the North. We will crush the enemy at Manassas and then procede with all speed into Maryland, taking it whole, including the capital. After that, the whole of the East will lay open to us. I know that the Lord God will bless this mission and further our just cause. We await your permission only.

    Gen. TJ Jackson

    from the Richmond Times
    GREAT VICTORY AT MANASSAS!!!

The New Year has indeed started off with a bang as the haughty armies of the invader were whipped soundly at Manassas junction after six days of hard fighting. Still our losses were minimum to those of the Federals, mostly because of the genius of our generals. Stonewall Jackson began the battle on the 13th, attacking where he was least expected. Generals Lee and Beauregard arrived soon and by the force of numbers broke the green Yankees like a twig. Such effective manuvers used against the vaulted Federal army are sure to be noted by friendly powers overseas. Jackson has four divisions under his command, Lee and Beauregard having two respectively. All we can say to them is ON TO WASHINGTON OUR BRAVE BOYS!

And now famous historian Elias Tarfarius interjects to talk about the invasion of the North.

This plan was the brain child of Stonewall Jackson and President Davis decided to give him carte blanche to carry it out since he figured it could mean victory in the elections too. It just happened to be the best time for an invasion since the Midwest states had forced Lincoln to send tons of troops to the West to protect them against the Army of the Tennesee under J.E.B. Stuart. In mid February, the army marched into Maryland by two colomns, one under Jackson to secure western Maryland and the other under Lee and Beauregard to storm Washington and take the eastern part of the state. Now, at this time you must realize that there were only two Union divisions in the whole state!

    The Conscription Perscription

Historian Elias Tarfarius interjects again to talk about the Conscription Act of 1862

In early 1862 the difference in manpower between the two sides became more noticeable. Whereas the Union consisted of 23 states and 22,000,000 people, the Confederacy had only 9,000,000 people (including 3,500,000 slaves). President Jefferson Davis now announced that the South could not win the war without conscription. In April the Confederate Congress passed the Conscription Act which drafted white men between eighteen and thirty-five for three years' service. It was to be the last major act of his presidency.

Braxton Bragg and senior officers in the Army of Tennessee sent a letter to General Samuel Copper about the need for fresh troops (25th January, 1862).

We, the undersigned officers of the Confederate Army, being deeply impressed with the belief that unless the ranks are speedily replenished our cause will be lost, and being thoroughly satisfied that there are enough able-bodied young men out of the service to accomplish that object, would earnestly implore the president of the Confederate States to take prompt measures to recruit our wasted armies by fresh levies from home.

We especially deplore the unfortunate provision of the exemption bill which has allowed more than 150,000 soldiers to employ substitutes, and we express our honest conviction that not 1 in 100 of these substitutes is now in the service. In numerous instances, fraudulent papers were employed; in others, diseased men were presented and accepted but not to be discharged; in still more cases, vicious and unprincipled substitutes were brought up but to desert at the first favorable moment.

from the front page of the Richmon Examiner June18th, 1862
    -McCullouch's 1st Corps Enters Kentucky-

Ben McCullouch and his newly conscript 1st Corps have been on the front page every day since they left Richmond to drive Yankee raiders out of the West of the Commonwealth. Now they have entered Kentucky, hoping to soon achieve its liberation. Our prayers go with them.

-Washington is Occupied - Federals Flee to New York City-

Rumor has it that "Honest" Abe once again has escaped while in female costume as he did when he entered Washington for his inauguation in '61. It seems fitting that he had to flee the capital in such disgrace, since he brought this upon himself and the nation. Gen. Lee has taken care to see that no looting or burnings, as the British so wickedly did in 1814, take place...

July 29, 1862 - The White House... in Richmond that is.

President Stevens looked out the window of the office on to the crowded streets of Richmond. Every person possible was out celebrating the victory of Gen. Lee near New York City. The President was also celebrating in his perculiar way, standing at the window. He had a war to win and a party to keep in office. "The Democrats will never hold asway over the nation again, as God is my wittness." Envoys sent abroad to Britain, France, and Russia would now have a few more cards to play. "A Confederate victory is a Whig victory, which means that the nation will continue to run in the order it has become accustomed to, recognizing that certain peoples are inferior and don't qualify as citizens." That reminded him, he need a way to get rid of that troublesome Israelite, Judah Benjamin, one of Davis' old guard. "A nice 'trip' to Europe would do him well."

    The Trent Affair

from The Washington Star - Washington, D.C., Saturday, August 30, 1862

THE SEIZURE OF MESSRS. MASON AND SLIDELL.
    The Particulars of Their Capture
THE PRISONERS GO DIRECT TO FORT WARREN

The United States steamer San Jacinto, cruising in the Babama channel on the 8th November, in the forenoon, overhauled the English mail steamer Trent, and placed her under her (the San Jacinto's) guns.
Lieut. Fairfax was ordered on board the Trent to ascertain if Messrs. Slidell, Mason, McFarland and Eustis were on board; with directions, in case he found them there, to cause them to be brought on board the San Jacinto.
They were found there, and declined to go on board the U.S. steamer unless force was used; whereupon Lieut. Fairfax placed his hand on Mason's shoulder, and with other assistance, quietly took him to the Trent's gangway, and from thence into the San Jacinto's boat.
Mr. Slidell making a similar assertion of his purpose, was taken to the gangway and carried on to the San Jacinto's boat in the same way.
They were all well treated on Captain Wilkes' ship, which immediately started for the United States with her important prisoners, reaching Hampton Roads yesterday-Friday-morning.
Capt. Wilkes sends to the Navy Department voluminous papers on the affair, including written statements concerning their capture, from all the male prisoners named above.

    WHAT WILL ENGLAND DO?

Since the capture of Messrs. Mason and Slidell, many persons have been anxiously enquiring what will England do? What she will do is uncertain, but what she ought to to is very sure. The British Government should direct Lord Lyons to return the thanks of her Majesty to the United States Government for its forbearance in not having seized the Steamer Trent, brought her into port and confiscated ship and cargo for an open flagrant breach of international law in suffering the agents of enemies at war with the United States to come on board, and for carrying official papers and despatches of the enemies of the United States. By all writers and jurists the conveyance of hostile despatches is regarded as an illegal assistance afforded to a belligerent of the most injurious, hostile and noxious character.
This principle has been enforced by the British Government for nearly a hundred years with inflexibility severity against every maritime power. Carrying the enemy's despatches has often been declared by that government as an act of the most noxious and hostile character. . . .
By the British Queen's Proclamation, in May last, Government acknowledged the rebel States to be Belligerents, to wit, enemies of the United States Government, making war upon it. The hour that proclamation was made, British ships, by their own principles of international law were bound under penalty of seizure and confiscation to abstain from carrying despatches or doing any act that favored the Confederates, because in time of war such act would be noxious and hostile to this Government. But instead of observing such conduct, British vessels have become the daily vehicles of Confederate communication. It was time for an end to be put to his unneutral conduct. . . .

    The Trent Affair

Last week it seemed difficult to obtain attention for any subject save that of the American crisis. "Who can tell what a day may bring forth?" Today, in the presence of the heavy affliction with which it has pleased the Almighty and Inscrutable to visit our beloved Sovereign and the nation, even the solemn situation in which we have been placed by the piratical act of the Americans is momentarily disregarded while we seek to realize the sudden sorrow. But the record of the week must be duly completed.

President Lincoln's Message, as a composition, is conceived in the same low moral tone and executed with the same maladroitness which have characterized the preceding State Papers of his Government. But such considerations are of small importance compared with the indications of policy afforded by the document. There is no mention of the Trent outrage. From this circumstance, and from a meaningless declaration that the President does not desire hostilities with England, some sanguine writers have hastened to assume that the act of Captain Wilks will be disavowed, and the Southern Commissioners handed over to us. It is urged that Mr. Lincoln did not deem the act of the American Captain as worthy of notice in the Message, or that it is one upon which England has but to express her feeling to obtain immediate atonement. And this view is supported by reference to the fact that an actual wrong to British subjects is mentioned, and Congress is recommended to make compensation. We should be too happy to believe that so wise a course was that designed for adoption by the American Government, but we are afraid to resign ourselves to so agreeable a hope. It contradicts the general expression of that part of the American public which makes itself heard, and which exercises a fatal control over the so-called government of the American press (with one or two honourable exceptions), and of the American Secretary of State. The House of Representatives has deliberately offered a vote of thanks to the pirate Wilks; and though it is technically true that this is not precisely the same thing as a vote of our House of Commons, it is equally true, and more to the purpose, that the House of Representatives expresses the sentiments of those who, to the disgrace of the higher classes in the States, are permitted to engross political power. In the face of all these demonstrations, to say nothing of an official utterance by the head of the Federal Navy, we dare scarcely believe that the despatch of Earl Russell will receive the only answer which we can accept. Still we have only to wait and hear. Our next Impression will, in all probability, contain the expected intelligence. The news regarding the struggle between the North and South merely states that General Burnsides has not moved, "nor will he move until he is certain to win" -- a somewhat indefinite date. We learn with something akin to disgust that the barbarous reprisal system is likely to come into effect, that prisoners are being cruelly treated, and may be actually executed in cold blood -- facts which reduce a war to an abominable brigandage. The North, in its excess of zeal for civilization, is also elaborately destroying harbours in the South, thus by savage acts giving the lie to the profession of belief that the territory to which the harbours belong will ever again be a portion of the Federal dominions.

    It now rains blood

    October 14, 1862

    Dear wife,

We entered the city of Austin today. There was no Roman triumph awaiting us, only a few old men with muskets and tumbleweed. Some of the boys say they wish they were back East where all the action is and where they are needed. I tell them "You are needed here to. This is part of the same great struggle, boys." I feel even more strongly now about this, as recently we have found that the rebels in North Texas have set about attacking all suspected Unionist families. We saw many burnt homesteds and when we captured one of the brigants, all he said was "Why should we Assist Unionists? We must root out the enemies of the nation in order have our sacred independence from you people." It was a silly yet chilling logic. The same motive seems to drive these rebels and a I must ask, what motivates us. We are not going to end slavery and we have already lost most of the East for God's sake! Is the Union worth so much innocent blood. I keep these thoughts betweeb you and me, for I am a soldier and it is my duty to obey. Pray daily and I hope to be safely home soon.

    forever yours,
    Joshua Chamberlain

From the Richmond Times October 26, 1862
The New Vlad Dracula - Lincoln reject peace for MORE BLOOD!!!

In the wake of yet a third great victory by General Robert E. Lee (or the Marshal as some have begun to call him) at Manassas Junction on the 2nd, President Stevens sent Sen. Robert Tombs (Geo.) to Boston to neogociate the terms of a fair peace treaty. All the goverment requested was the end of hostilities and the removal of all Federal troops from the Confederacy. The Yankee President, in his usual thoughtless manner, rejected the treaty and all attempts at peace. The North now faces certain defeat and with every advancing day, our army grows stronger and Europe lifts its head to take notice. The bloodletting of the new Dracula cannot last long now, the world shall call it to an end by both word and deed!

Ben McCullouch - The Liberator of Kentucky

Before the end of last year, Ben McCullouch was a no name general of whom little was expected, yet former President Davis gave him command of the five new divisions raised by the Conscription Act. None knew then that their purpose was to liberate Kentucky until the fall. In an amazing lighting campaign, he destroyed the Federal army at Bowling Green then proceding in a circuit around the state, ending his travels in Paducah, which fell on Jan. 28th. The Federals in Memphis are now completely cut off from supply and our glorious armies in the West under McCullouch and J.E.B. Stuart are sure to carry the day.

1863-01-24 : February 23, 1863 : We have hardly improved our relations with Russia.

February 23, 1863 - The Office of the Emperor Napoleon III... in Paris of course

Mason and Slidell sat tensely in their seats and exsercised their ears to hear what was being said in the study. The Emperor had retreated there for a last minute chat with the minister of War, the main naval officials, and, strange to say, the Italian minister of War, the Italian ambassador, and a cardinal carrying a sealed scroll. The two men quickly flashed back to their meetings in London with Foriegn Minister and the Russian ambassador. Both had said many a kind word but the envoys were left out in the cold and soon shoved off to Paris. It was clear that while Russia and Britain were by no means hostile to the Confederacy, they were not going to risk spilling blood for it. Now, the Emperor Napoleon III might be different. He was always ready for an adventure abroad, but until now had been waiting for Britain to make the first move. Now it was all up him and the French people to turn the tide of history. The doors of the study swung wide suddenly...

Napoleon III: Gentlemen, you are Americans and you like plain talk so let me be plain. The French nation has fought for liberty across the globe, beginning with our help to your forefathers during the first war of independence...

Mason and Slidell turn to look at each other with huge smiles upon their weary faces.

Napoleon III: Gentlemen, as you surmise, I now lend to your Confederacy that same aid which Louis XVI gave to your forefathers fourscore and six years ago. I also tell you now that our ardent ally Italy has pledged its aid to the cause and all the Catholics in the Confederacy may now rest assured that the Holy Father endorses their endevour for freedom.

Mason: Dear sir, we could never repay you for this great kindness you have done for our nation!

Napoleon III: Don't worry, I'll just write it off as a business expense.

I agree with Bandman, there are plenty of CSAAR's, and each of them has a different strategy for them, whether it be peaceniks, or warmongers or agrarians or industrialists, its all fun to read.

    A Maine Summer

    July 12th, 1863 - A farm near Portland, Maine

Ol' Farmer Joe is out walking to his stable when he hears...

Ol' Farmer Joe: Hey Ethel, I dont suppose any our men in the army speak French.

Ethel: Well of course not, husband! What could make you ask such a silly question?

Ol' Farmer Joe: Cause there's a long line of men in blue coming this way sing it. Looks like we got guests, Ethel.

    Three New Stars

    Dear Jeff,

I write to you from Paris where I have sought to escape my troubles and the war, then only to find that it comes to me still. People always wish to talk to me about the war and government, or blame me for some ill reported. I now have tea with Napoleon II often and I have been kept so busy then I have not been able to start on that book I was telling Varina about. I am not even sure the subject matter since the Confederacy seems to grows everyday. Truly, I wish to return but I know that my exile is for the better currently. I hear the Old Skelaton appointed you secretary of war. If ever a position suited you, that is it. The strains and string of the Presidency cannot bind you there. I will write again soon. Alll is well that ends well.

    your humble servant and friend,
    Judah Benjamin

December 1, 1863 - The Congress in the State House in Richmond

President Stevens: Gentlemen, before you leave to go homeward for the time you must have with your families, let us look back and be most thankful to the Almighty for the events of this year, 1863. Among you now are 6 more senators and more representatives from Maryland, Kentucky, and Delaware. We must applaud these men who came out of the tyrant's grip to live free among their brothers. Let us be thankful to the Emperor of France and his valiant troops for seeing the rightness of our cause and joining this mighty struggle. What lies ahead shall not be easy, but the road to Heaven is never easy. Let us go on for however long it takes to assure our liberties. We will be victorious, by the grace of God!

    *cheers and applause*

Jefferson Davis slumps in his seat, "I should be making that speech, I should be standing there welcoming those states. How can it be that one man has such bad luck in a revolution? How?"

There was no way in hell Delaware would have willingly joined the south, no matter what a crushing victory the South won. Despite the legality of slavery it was rare, and the state was extremely pro Union. I wouldn't even consider it border state.

America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization. - Georges Clemenceau, President of France during the Great War
