Navy, navy, navy. And once again navy. Seems like you want to repeat the great age of discoveries! :D Too bad that there is no terra incognita to be discovered by guys of the "size" of Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias...

These are really entertaining and educating AARs, espically with all your comments on game mechanics, exploits, tips and bugs!

Thanks!

So what colonies/claims do you actually have at the moment?

I'll talk about this in detail later today when I do an update, but just for you:

Minto, Timor in Indonesia
Okinawa (claim only) in Japan
Mocambique (6 provinces), Swaziland (ETA: 1848), Blantyre (1 province) in East Africa
The starting 3-province region and 2 islands in West Africa

I've screwed up big time this game around, so no typical 30,000,000 Portuguese by 1850s (5-6 regions). However, I've taken Cambodia and Mandwi (Northeast India)... :)

Well, as I thought I've stated before:

1. Ships take a long time to build.
2. I have a ship-constructing industry to feed - no socialists, please.
3. Ships don't take as much manpower, especially after battle-incurred damages.
4. I've had a huge army before, ok? Time to try something new.

I am privileged indeed!

Game 3 Chapter 3

January 1, 1848. It is truly amazing how much moneypower can a maxed out factory do, and I am not only talking size here. Check out the Portuguese budget - the only difference from the previous budget shot is that I got more craftsmen and a handful of capitalists, but watch the changes.

When it became clear that Portugal has lost the colonial race - oh sure, there were plenty of opportunities to plug trading posts all over the place and then engage in heavy diplo-trading - the country turned east. Quickly, Cambodia and one of the smaller Indian states have been subdued. However, how far could that go? Despite the booming economy, army increases were problematic. An attempt to construct an Inf-A and then a MW has nearly bankrupted Portugal, even considering that I was producing the goods necessary. Perhaps later...

This made me remember why I was building Inf and FR back during game 1 for a while :)

Unlike the other games, this time around Liberal ideas have truly surged in population. Even though I went for the most aristocratic colonies. Even though I kept higher taxes a notch lower, which does help you prevent some of those aristocrats from leaving. For the first time in many games the Liberal party had a chance of winning the 1849 election before 1870s... On the good side, it was 1848, and socialists weren't anywhere it sight, yet.

It's amazing what undertaxing your POPs can do, hm?

July 1, 1850. It had to be Murphy's law; as soon as I claimed to be socialist-free, a third of country turned red. It was probably one of the hardcoded changes, like the one hitting you around 1870s. Interestingly enough, incomes of POPs have actually increased since early 1840s, with every family having life needs at 100% except for a handful of aristocrats (but those can't have them at 100% until certain products appear, right?). Yet the country turned red.

In other news, Portugal was finally building its own railroad. The whole European part of it except for Azores had construction in progress; the screenshot capture the state of things just before the first one was completed.

Also there was expansion of my artillery industry, as clippers had seen less and less profit. From 2 level 2s I've gone to 2 level 3s and one level 1 artillery factory, which, undoubtedly, is visible from the income increase.

Among other things:

1. I'm yet to see a 10,000,000 army of England, but 4,500,000 is a standard.

2. Despite the fact that only 28% of voters swing Conservative and consciousness is 10s for the most of population, 70% of voters are supporting the conservative party, up 20% from 2 years ago. Was that some freaky result of the socialist appearance on the political stage?

Or could it just be that most of the Liberals are poor?

I wonder, would you be willing to govern Portugal now?

I'm sure you would do a better work that the present government*

* - They aren't really governing, just help themselves and their friends.

Actually, Clerks and Capitalists are Liberals, and they are the wealthiest folks in the game.

Oh well, that's one idea scrapped anyway.

Perhaps the game is just reflecting irrational human activity? ;)
