Alright, I think I'm gonna start wrapping this AAR up. Mainly because I wish to install the upcoming update of Kaiserreich(I dare not fiddle with my current settings, it might just mess up my savegames) and because I feel like the story is coming to it's conclusion. Thank you all for your comments, stay tuned for a couple of updates more.

31. End of an Empire

Now that Korea had been liberated, the final task of taking down Manchukuo and the remains of the Japanese Empire was still to be done. The Finns launched an assault on Manchuko at the same time the Russians launched theirs.

The Autumn Offensive aimed to completely crush the remains of the Manchukuo Imperial Army and the Japanese Imperial Army there. After securing Vladivostok and a sizeable portion of the Amur region, the armies were ordered to march into Manchuria. The offensive was a stunning success, with all of the main objectives taken under one month. The last great battle took place in Manchan, where the remains of the Manchu-Japanese forces were driven. Although their numbers were great, they had bee out of supply for a long time and surrendered after a short series of battles. After this, Manchukuo surrendered unconditionally.

The Autumn Offensive

The last great offensive of the war was the Amur Offensive of November. This was the last push north, aiming to take the final place of refuge for the Japanese government, the province Okhotsk. It became clear that the push northwards would be difficult and slow, with very low infrastructure to use and a relentless enemy fighting for every inch of land. Thus, an amhibious landing was made.

The two divisions of infantry that landed in Okhotsk quickly took out the only capable fighting force there. Most of the Japanese were starving, low on morale and on the verge of freezing over. The battle was short.

The Japanese government had no place to run. This was it. Emperor Hirohito signed the unconditional surrender of Japan on the deck of the Finnish carrier Suur-Suomi, on the 24th January 1948 and adressed the remains of his nation.

"I have given serious thought to the situation prevailing at home and abroad and have concluded that continuing the war can only mean destruction for the nation and prolongation of bloodshed and cruelty in the world. I cannot bear to see my innocent people suffer any longer. ...

There are those who say the key to national survival lies in a decisive battle in the homeland. The experiences of the past, however, show that the enemy managed to defeat us in our very home . ..

It goes without saying that it is unbearable for me to see the brave and loyal fighting men of Japan disarmed. It is equally unbearable that others who have rendered me devoted service should now be punished as instigators of the war. Nevertheless, the time has come to bear the unbearable. ...

I swallow my tears and give my sanction to the proposal to accept the Finnish proclamation on the basis outlined by the King of Finland, Kaarle II and his Foreign Minister, Hilja Riipinen"

Surrender of Japan

Finally, after some ten years of constant fighting, the war was over. And Finland had emerged victorious.

Allright, I'm working on the two final updates of this AAR. One will focuse on the immediate aftermath of the war and the other tells something about the world later on. They will probably be up this week, or at least before July. Stay tuned.

Even better, I shall post one world map with each of the updates.

32. The New World

Now that Japan had capitulated, the war was over. But after the war followed a difficult peace process. The Russians, who had done most of the land fighting and committed huge resources on fighting Japan, wanted their share of the former Empire of Japan.

However, the fact was that it was Finland who had forced Japan into submission. The Russians were on the verge of collapsing before the mighty Japanese counter-offensive of 1946 and it was only the Finnish landing in Japan that had prevented the utter collapse of the Russian front. The afterwar talks would be difficult.

The preliminary talks were inconclusive, but as time passed, an agreement was made. The new nation of Korea would get land from the former Manchukuo, thus becoming the Greater Korean Federation. Japan was also granted independence, but it was strictly monitored by Finland and had only a minor self-defense force in place of an Army. Russia would take the all of the lands in the Amur region and the rest of Manchukuo. In return of this huge gift to the Russians, Finland would gain all of Karelia and the Kolan peninsula. Thus, the former idea of a "Greater Finland" came into being. Germany would get all of the formerly Japanese-held Pacific islands, including Formosa.

This was, however, an uneasy peace for those who lived in the regions divided between the victors. There was unrest in the new Russian regions, as well as in Finnish England and German France. In the USA, the isolationist attitude of the "MacArthur clique" that ruled the nation, had led into a deep depression and there were socialist and anarchist demonstrations everywhere. An solution had to created for these inner troubles. This was a decisive point in history, since each of the great powers of the world created their own way to solve problems. These events would create a new world order for decades to come.

In Russia, a younger generation of more hardline-syndicalists rose to power by fueling the minority-unrest in Russia and by generating hate towards the "capitalist Europe" whose imperialist policy had led to the Second Great War. Now the formerly quite open Russia changed into a syndicalist police state, with no intentions of continuing the former foreign policy. Now, they were trying to bring their syndicalist revolution to other countries. They waged a short war against the Cossacks of Don-Kuban Union and invaded all of the Caucasian nations. Some time later, Russia formed a new military alliance called the "Universal Revolutionary Alliance", whose members were quite scattered all over the world. The members were Mexico, Centroamerica, Bengal, the radical Millenarians in China and the new Syndicalist Ottoman Empire, which had gone under a revolution after the Russians had taken the Caucasus.

The emblem of the URA

In USA, the socialist unrest grew exponentially. Since the URA-member Mexico was just south of the border, the demonstrators got support from there. The URA nations were providing the anarchists and syndicalists weapons and the once peaceful demonstrations now turned bloody.

MacArthur's solution to the problem was a nationwide martial law. The demonstrators were attacked by army units leaving thousands dead. USA had become de facto a military dictatorship and the former promises of a democratic election in the near future were dropped. A curfew was put into effect in every major city and more army units were concentrated on the southern border. USA also joined the former Entente powers and some time later the "Ottawa Pact" was made, creating a new military alliance including Canada, USA, The Caribbean Federation, Delhi, Australasia and National France.

The emblem of the Ottawa Pact

This alliance had a very anti-European attitude, since the Brits in Canada wished to liberate their island and the French in Africa wished to take mainland France back from Germany.

In Europe, the economy was booming but the military threat from the Ottawa Pact and the URA demanded an European military alliance. The leadership of Finland and Germany met in Hamburg to discuss the future of European military co-operation. After this conference the alliance was ratified. Wehrbund Europa(Euroopan Puolustusliitto in Finnish) had born. This military alliance included Finland and her dominions and colonies, Germany along with her dominions and colonies, Italy, Reichskomissariat Frankreich, Mittelafrika, Austria and the Allgemeine Ostasiatische Gesellschaft in China. WEU was by far the strongest of the three alliances, but the still wasn't all-powerful and unchallengeable.

The emblem of the WEU.

Because of the vast amount of military investment in all sides, a three-way war would be an outright disaster(author's note: No weapons of mass-destruction were developed yet, rather the tactics and technology of war was directed more towards large-scale assaults and vast missile-bombings, both which would cause immense suffering to the civilian population). The world settled in an uneasy Cold War.

The Finnish foreign policy moved towards more militaristic stance, with the newly acquired dominions providing bases around the world. As for the occupied territories, most of them were directly annexed, excluding Tansania, which was sold to Mittelafrika in 1950.

England was a problematic territory, since it couldn't be given independence because of the great industrial capacity. In the end, the government decided to give it autonomy very much in the style of Åland. Still, rebellions occured from time to time, but they were mainly the remnants of the old syndicalist regime that were trying to stir up trouble.

Most of the armed conflicts between the nations were fought by proxy wars in South-America and Central Asia, so no great international crisis would take place. Nevertheless, sometimes one of the alliances got bold, as was the case in the Maltan Missile Crisis of 1962, where Russia situated ballistic missiles in the newly independent nation of Malta(which was given independence after the war, but went through a socialist revolution). These missiles could target most of the great cities in Europe as well as the capital of National France, Algiers. In a rare moment of co-operation, the French lodged a protest along with the Germans demanding the immediate removal of the missiles in Malta. The whole world held it's breath until the Russian finally agreed to remove the missiles.

The world could sigh for relief for now, but it would take decades before a true peace would be achieved.

That's a very good (and unusually believable) aftermath report. Can't wait to read how your "predictions" continue!

Poor Russia! All that to fall to syndicalism! :(

Very nicely done part 1 of the epilogue. :)

Note: I fixed some errors in the map and added a bit of syndicalist flavour to the emblem of the URA.

Thank you all for your support and comments! Now, to wrap this thing up with a bang, I'm making the longest update I've ever written. It's divided into two parts. Part one tells about the world abroad while part two concentrates of Finland. This is the final update, but I am willing to answer any questions you might have. Once again, thank you!

33. Midnight Sun

Part 1

The second "hot spot" of the three-way Cold War after the Maltan missile crisis was China. The Millenarian sect "Shangqing Tianguo" of China (who never quite followed the ideology of syndicalism, rather their own mystic way of revolution) started a war against the neighbouring warlords in 1969 without consulting the other URA-nations first. With WEU nation next to it's border, the war threatened to escalate into a third world war.

Luckily for the world, the URA-leadership was caught by surprise of this radical move by the Shangqing Tianguo, since the alliance wan't really ready to war on such short notice. The angered leaders of the URA quickly revoked the membership of Shangqing Tianguo and stopped their diplomatic and military support to them. They also stated that they would not intervene in Chinese affairs any longer, thus leaving the WEU free to do what they wished with the Millenarians.

Thus, the crisis seemed to be resolved. The only thing left would be a quick military intervention from the WEU. But the crisis escalated when the war was turning out to be a smashing success for the Shangqing Tianguo. While the WEU was busy deciding if it should intervene or not, The Millenarians quickly subdued the western lands of Xibei,Tibet, Nepal and finally the southern lands of Yunnan.

The rate of which these conquers happened alarmed the WEU. It was clear that actions must be taken in order to at least contain the spreading of this sect.
Alliance negotiations with the Qing Empire immediately begun. They were more than willing to join, since the threat posed by Shangqing Tianguo was too great for them to handle alone and they would surely be the next target.

With this, the AlgOstAsien GmbH and the Qing Empire united into the Empire of China. The Shangqing Tianguo in return formed the Heavenly Kingdom of China(both were commonly referred as East China or West China). China was effectively divided into two with huge amounts of minefields, watchtowers and borderguards on the common border.

A piece of the border

After China, the Cold War cooled down for a bit, all of the alliances putting internal matters first. Russia was struggling with economical and domestical issues, USA had to commit more and more troops to flush out rebels in the Rocky Mountains and in the rest of the country. Finland and Germany had to keep their vast empires in check while at the same time keeping the military strong and the home population happy. All in all, the years 1970-74 were called the "Frozen War", since no great conflicts between the three blocs took place.

In 1978, the Cold War heated up once again, with Mexico and Centroamerica invading the United Provinces and Panama. The Panama channel was now in syndicalist hands, something the US could not accept. This time a war between the Ottawa Pact and the URA seemed closer than ever. USA moved into DEFCON 2 and the Russian Pacific Navy was moving closer to the West Coast.

WEU quickly stepped in, announcing that if the URA and the Ottawa Pact would commence hostilities, the fragile world peace would be lost forever and the WEU would have to act accordingly.

The three blocs were on a collision course until something very surprising happened. USA stopped all military preparations and seemed to call all of her foreign troops back home.

The reason for this came clear soon enough. After decades of opression, police violence and governmental censorship and now a new war looming at the horizon, the US people could take it no more. It seemed that the whole South and Midwest and parts of the both coasts were on a stage of open rebellion, with army units joining the rebels.

The new US leader Gen. Robert C. Kingston, who had risen to power after MacArthur had died, ordered the loyal army units to use full force against the rebels. What he did not know was that the rebels were also closing in on Washington D.C and some of them were already in the city. The General tried to escape, but his helicopter was shot down by rebel Comanche-copters.
The rebels took control of all major cities in the US and announced that they would bring back the old, democratic and free USA.

The US had now become a democracy and the new government with the quickly elected president Lyndon B. Johnson announced that they would no longer have any dealings with the Ottawa Pact or any other military alliance for that matter.

The Ottawa Pact soon broke and most of the nations affiliated with it chose non-alignment. Canada and National France still remained allies, united by their common goals in Europe.

Now the Cold War hade become a two-sided struggle, with uneven opponents. The Finnish and German governments thus aimed to completely remove the threat of a new world war and started Project Midnight Sun, aimed to develop an atomic weapon for the WEU.

In 1982, the first atomic bomb known as the "Eibombe" was detonated in the Kola peninsula. After this test, these bombs entered mass-production and by 1985, WEU announced that it had some 100 atomic weapons. Russia and the other URA nations could not compete with this, since their atomic program had only just started and would probably not produce even a single prototype bomb in 15 years.

The fruit of Project Midnight Sun: The Eibombe (egg bomb) explodes in the Kola Peninsula

The Russian economy was also in shambles. The arms race and all other military expeditures ate almost thirty percent of the whole economy.
All in all, the situation was unbearable for Russia. Democratic elements were gaining power in the country and the military front was hopeless since Russia wouldn't be able to retaliate in the event of a full WEU assault. The Caucasian nations revolted and the political situation could only be described as chaotic.

The Cold War ended in the bankruptcy of Russia and the dissolution of the URA. WEU remained the sole great alliance on the world, with most of it's former enemies gone. Still, the situation of China was a problem(Even more now since Heavenly Kingdom of China invaded Alash Orda while Russia was in internal chaos and had secretly started developing an atomic bomb of their own. Bengal had also aligned with it now that the URA had been dissolved) ,as well as the hate-policy of Canada and National France against the WEU. Still, the world was now at peace with no threat of a world war in sight.

Part 2

After the formation of the three alliances, Finland became very active in foreign affairs and was one of the founding members of the WEU. His Majesty's Armed Forces were greatly expanded, especially the Royal Finnish Navy and the Royal Finnish Air Force. Foreign relations were quite cool on countries outside the WEU and Europe.

The King, who had been very active in military matters during the Second Great War, now left those matters for his High Command and concentrated on
economical affairs and toured his kingdom to make better contact with his people. He also adopted new titles, as well as abandoned older ones. His titles were now "Kaarle II of Finland, King of Finland, Karelia and England, Duke of Åland, Grand Prince of Lapland, Scotland and Scandinavia, Lord of Kaleva and the North, Lord Protector of Guinea and Angola, Count of Denmark and Svalbard."

The Cold War era was in Finland a one of syndicalist paranoia, military expansion and great economical changes. The political situation remained quite stable, sometimes switching more to the right or left. The Lapua movement that had dominated Finland in her early years was removed completely from power after the war and most of it's leading members imprisoned as enemies of state. The Royal Family was more popular than ever and they were seen as great symbols of the nation.

After the end of the Cold War, relations with USA warmed considerably and trade flourished between Europe and USA. Russia, on the other hand, was considered a chaotic enviroment and very few Finnish companies invested there. The primary exports of Finland are steel, oil, paper, lumber, minerals and communication technology.

When King Kaarle II died in 1980 at the age of 83, the whole nation mourned. Many world leaders attended his funeral, including president Richard Nixon, Emperor Louis Ferdinand of Germany, Emperor Otto von Habsburg of Austria and even Emperor Hirohito of Japan, his former enemy.
He was buried next to his father in Naantali.

His son, Moritz Friedrich, rose to the throne at the age of 53. He took the ruling name Freedrik I. His era saw the development of atomic weapons, the end of the Cold War and the rapid recovery of the economy from the Great Depression of 1989. Even now, at the age of 81, he remains a very popular character and is truly a father-figure for the nation.
