The Empire of the Pacific
Chapter 1:
The Rise of Chile
Government of Francisco Ruiz-Tagle
(1840 - 1845)
President Francisco Ruiz-Tagle
After Francisco Ruiz-Tagle won the elections, he sent envoys to sign a peace treaty with Bolivia, asking only for Atacama and Calama. When the envoys passed trough Iquique, they were stoped by some of Bulnes’s soldiers. They forced the envoys to go back to Santiago, to say that Bulnes would not allow that treaty to be signed, because the blood of his soldiers is worth more than a couple of kilometers of land.
When Ruiz-Tagle found out about what happened in Iquique, he declared Bulnes as a traitor and that he had to be captured. No one did nothing, Bulnes’s was liked by the people and he controled the army, there was nothing that could be done against him. Under the pressure of Portales, the conservatives forced Ruiz-Tagle to apologize and recognize Bulnes as a true patriot. This gave Bulnes even more freedom to do what he liked, knowing that he was supported by Portales and the party.
Soon after the incident between Bulnes and Ruiz-Tagle, a couple of bolivian envoys went to discuss a peace treaty with Bulnes. He, knowing that was backed by the party, refused the treaty and killed the envoys. After that, Bulnes started a campaign to conquer whole Bolivia. Two years later, Exaltacion, the last bolivian province fell under chilean hands. Manuel Bulnes forced the bolivian government to give Chile all their land except for the city of La Paz, that should be given to Chile in five more years, so it could be seen as a peacefull union of the two countries.
Bolivian Campaign
Bulnes’s thought that he was going to be called back to Santiago, to start participating in the government, so he could start to gain political power for the upcoming election. However, he was not called, he was ordered by Portales to stay in Bolivia to further stabilize the region. This angered Bulnes, he saw this as an insult, so, looking for more power, he ordered his men to attack Peru. He couldn’t start a rebellion, he had only half of his army under its command, so there were high chances of losing. Conquering Peru would give him more power, because he wouldn’t just control Bolivia, he would also control Peru, and with that he could rebuild the confederation with he as its leader.
Bulnes’s Campaign was easy, he attacked the peruvian provinces of the amazon and then go straight to Lima. But it didn’t go as planned.
Battle of Puerto Maldonado
Bulnes is caught off guard by the peruvian army under general Calvo. However, they were ten thousand men, the same size of Bulnes’s army, he still had chances.
Calvo's army fighting Bulnes's men
Calvo, knowing that Bulnes had great experience, was prepared, he called for reinforcements. Another ten thousands peruvians came. They quickly surrounded Bulnes and the massacre begun.
Bulnes’s army started to have heavy casualties.
In the middle of the battle, an envoy came to speak with general Calvo, war was over, the chileans had conquered Lima while he was fighting with Bulnes. The Battle ended with a strange outcome, more than seven thousand chileans were death, but they helped to distract the peruvians enough to let the rest of the army conquer Lima.
----------O---------
The peace treaty was very favorable to Chile, Arica, plus some amazonian provinces were gained. Bulnes’s stoped his rebelliousness after the battle of Puerto Maldonado and submitted to the orders of the government once again, after all, the government commanded the army that conquered Lima and saved his life.
But this period was not just about war. During Ruiz-Tagle’s government, the industry developed futher. An experimental railroad was created, and was implemented in Santiago. There were plans to expand the railroads to Valparaiso and Rancagua, but the lack of steel in the market made this impossible.
Railroad of Santiago
During this period, a group of Labourers in Chillan, started taking control of the business, and thanks to the growing economy, they soon became rich.
The Chillan "Labourers"
Against Bulnes’s will, Ruiz-Tagle was again candidate of the conservative party. All seemed like they were going to win again. But after all the discordination between Bulnes and Ruiz-Tagle and the intrigues of Diego Portales, the population started distrusting the conservatives, they were tired of war and claimed for the death of Portales, who took Chile to an innecesary war. Because of this, the liberal Jose Maria de la Cruz, won the elections.
