Chapter 45: Coming and Going

"Let him that would move the world first move himself."

Socrates

Laigin, May 2, 1082

"Well," Hammud said as the camp was being broken up, "It does not look like we will be rid of our good host."

Looking away from his horse, Raymond de Toulouse said, "Has he stripped himself of the title of King? Is he calling himself sheik...no, Emir of the Irish yet?"

Hammud chuckled, "No, not yet, at least." He shook his head, "He's just insisting on following us. I'd rather he didn't. Bran was not particularly happy when I told him that we were leaving."

"Can you blame him?" asked Gisulf, who was perched awkwardly up on his horse, "Your the only person keeping him in power. If he stays here...he'd quickly get replaced."

Raymond understood Gisulf's logic. If King Bran tried to keep power here, his own people would kick him out of power even before the Venetians would arive. Even if he did manage to stay king, he would be lucky if the Venetians choose do nothing about his willing support of Hammud. Bran's a smart man, Raymond thought, If he is planning what I think he is, he is following Hammud's army just to gain land for himself far away from here.

Looking past Raymond and Hammud, Gisulf muttered, "Speak of the devil."

Turning around, Raymond saw that Bran was riding up towards them. The man grew his red hair long, which made him easy to pick out. He also sported one of the longest beards that Raymond had seen. He was always willing to show that he was in charge around his people; Bran accomplished this by wearing the most luxurious clothes he could get his hands on.

Bran grinned when he saw Hammud, "We're leavin' now, then?"

"Yes, we are to move out in an hour." Hammud replied. Just as this he said this, Bran's fourteen year old daughter, Ailleann, rode up beside her father. When she saw Hammud, she blushed. Raymond had heard that she thanked Hammud for refusing her father's proposal. Ailleann must of inherited the personality of her mother, because she was nothing like her father. The poor girl always seemed uncomfortable around people she did not know. "Are you ready?" Hammud asked.

The king nodded, "I'm ready, so are the men coming with me."

Raymond looked back at Ailleann. She was looking back up at her father's hall. He could tell that she did not want to leave. Ailleann turned back around and saw that Raymond had seen that. Embarrassed, she turned red again, looking down at the ground.

Raymond did not know if he had ever pitied someone more than Ailleann now.
